Very interesting interview by Rowan Vine on the latest Second Tier Podcast which was uploaded yesterday (Sunday). He goes into great detail about his time at QPR, and in particular about the circumstances surrounding his injury in 2008 during an open training session. He alleges his injury was deliberately caused by our third choice goalkeeper at the time, the American Matt Pickens. He goes into great detail above how he was ostracised by the Club after he sued them for damages. The case was settled out of court, but he is very critical of certain unnamed persons at Rangers, (although he does name Neil Warnock, who he says treated him very badly.)
I know lots of supporters have little time for Vine, but I would ask you to listen to the podcast before criticising him. Personally, he did not come across as someone I warm to but it was interesting to hear what he had to say. |  | | |  |

He says that one day he was leaving a game with his six year old son when one of a group of men who were drinking outside the Springbok threw a beer glass which hit a wall about two yards from him and his child. Whoever was responsible for that act cannot be called a supporter of our club. Unfortunately all teams have such nutters. To be fair to Rowan, despite his unhappy time at QPR, he says he holds no amnosity to the Club or the supporters, and describes “QPR as a Club which he holds close to his heart.” | | | |

Whether it was true or not, and whether it was just in response to abuse he was getting or not, there were many stories doing the rounds about him and money - telling people he couldn't run any more because his pockets were full of all the money QPR were paying him, lighting cigars with £50 notes in casinos and sht like this. People took against him because of those stories, I'd like to ask him how much truth there was in any of it and see what he said.
There was also a perception that he was just picking up his money, refusing to settle the contract, and not trying to get fit - had loans at Brentford and Southend in the divisions below I think where they sent him back early saying he wasn't even in physical condition to train with them. There was perception at the time was it was 'typical modern footballer' picking up £17k a week from us and offering fck all in return, not even in condition to get a training match at Southend etc etc. Obviously it suited the club for that to be out there as they wanted him out, shift the wage, and he'd tell you it probably had more to do with the goalkeeper smashing his legs to bits and then the treatment being botched.

I do wonder whether saying stuff like "its all the money weighing me down..." etc etc is actually a bit of a defence mechanism for someone when they're getting a lot of aggro, they can't do what they've always trained/aspired to do, and are in a bad place with getting into the casinos etc.
Not really criticising it, very hard to know how you'd be in a similar situation. |  | | |

Well I think by the time Warnock came along he was done, injury wise. In fact looking it up apart from 28 games for St Johnstone in 2012 he basically never played regularly again, so Warnock is probably looking at £17k a week tied up in somebody who isn't contribute and wants him out so he can spend that elsewhere.
The thing that comes across on Under The Cosh all the time is the weird, infantile, childish way clubs, managers and players behave when a player is no longer wanted at a club. Nobody ever actually seems to have a grown up conversation, they just engage in all sorts of gameplaying to make each others lives as miserable as possible until either the player cracks and leaves without getting all his money, or the club crack and pays them up.

Yeah always seems unnecessary to me too.
It feels like we as a club have got better at it recently and wether supporters agree with it or not, the current policy at QPR of no talks no play is very clear and up front at least. Everyone knows where they stand. | | | |

Totally a guess, but what I suspect happens is the player totally lets the manager down and at that point, managers are so overworked as if you wanna win you have to do it 24/7 that they prioritise and literally drop any interaction with the player.
Why invest and coach a player you know is going to be out no matter what (for whatever the reason is)? So, I suspect as a totally guess this is how it starts off on being forced out.
What they should do is be transparent and tell em they are not in their plans and they need to invest time in others and even though that really unhelpful, its the truth and the harsh realities of the business game. With some recommendations of what the player should do in this bad situation for them.
The player may hate em, high risk if they start being a Barton, but in the long run, the respect will be there. |  |

Vine was very easy to listen to, but the interviewers don't probe at all. From this account, which tbh doesn't have the ring of falsehood, it's not very impressive from the club. I suspect both things are true: he was treated badly and was depressed about the shÃtty situation that wasn't his fault, and he acted big bollox about all the cash he was trousering... |  | | |

To be fair, players can be just as bad. What Lee McCulloch did at Wigan was horrendous because he wanted to go to Rangers so much. All sort of bullsh!t.
