Would it be presumtuous of me to think that might have been a little bit more to your taste?

You R's.

My god! that first half? How did that happen?, about as good as I've seen us play since?

We picked our strongest team, with our technicians (Chair, Willock, Field, Johansen) all on the pitch at the same time, and we played our game.

As good as it was I think we have to acknowledge that a very limp city allowed us to play in a way Barnsley did not.

'We played our game' - think this is the key. Against Barnsley, we got drawn into playing a long ball game that we aren't suited too

Not having to listen to Cameron's "Cotton Eye Joe" might have helped too.

We played very well today.....first half was, perhaps, the best of the season. We passed the ball very well, we pressed very well, worked very hard and we took our chances very well. That adds up to an excellent performance and an excellent 3 points. City were pretty average without doubt.

Big question....who was MOM for us???

Johansen for me, but several candidates, which is nice!

I thought Austin and Willock linked well today, good width, and Charlie very unselfish bringing Willock into play, and providing good link play as well, Bristol clueless in First half, trying to work out why neither player was playing in the Centre Forward position.

Warburton ran rings around Pearson today, (yes Pearson had injuries, but he also has a very nice big cheque book funded squad).

Field for me, I thought he was fantatsic in the tackle and barely gave the ball away

He looks a very good player and only 22. Glad we've got option to buy as he looks a talent and something we've missed from our midfield for a while

This.

It’s such a better shape for us - 3421 - Chair and Willock gives us two players who offer for a ball to feet and find space in between the lines. This gives good passes like Field and Johansen options to play forward on the deck. We then have Willock and Chair running at defenders.

When we go 2 up top it forces us to be more direct abd makes us lighter in the middle of the park. Whereas Chair and Willock running and pressing was really good when we didn’t have he ball.

This shake also gives us “like for like” sub options with Adomah and Thomas too, which is good.

It’s a much better system.

But, yeah, play your best technicians and we play much better. Field could be a hugely exciting signing. He is a massive upgrade on Ball. Looks the full midfielder package to me. And Johansen is quality. Excellent the sort of savvy midfield physical presence we need.

Field, Johansen, Chair, Willock, Amos, Thomas, plus (hopefully!) the experience and quality of Austin and Adomah... and Ball, Carroll, Owens as back up...it’s a really exciting group.

That system worked excellently today, MW was probably forced into it because of the form of Dykes and Bonne - he cant keep on playing them from the start!! I thought we learned a lot from the Barnsley defeat with regard to shutting players down - I saw 3 players at a time pressing the ball which is what is needed.

Excellent analysis, Hunter.

Agree with it all, but would also this - the big win today was that we learned that Austin can play up front without support, can play in a footballing possession-orientated, passing-orientated team and that we don't have to go direct. That's big for us to know that we can play that way with Austin. Huge.

It's as though we had picked up Barnsley's pressing style without resorting to their Bouncy Ball football.

I think we played equally well against them at home, in the first half, but we didn't score. Scoring first is key to our style of play. If either Dykes or Chaz (or better still, both) had taken their early chances against Barnsley, it would have been a totally different game. Likewise with Dykes v Preston. We need to go in front, to get the confidence to keep doing what we do best. If we don't, we invariably get suckered in the 2nd half

Field’s biggest issues are self belief and injuries. It’s why he’s cheap, and why he could be amazing for us. Very undervalued player if you can get him and keep him fit, and our medical team have been fcking bang on since Warbs got here.

Interesting. Do we have a battery of medical experts, I know there's a Dr Ahmad, would he be 'the man' or is there a team of specialists hidden away somewhere?

Isnt that the model we are trying g to develop? Take young players who've missed out at bigger clubs and give them opportunities.
Field (and Amos?) with 50+ games could prove to be a big player.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Field pop up at LB soon, really like everything I see and hear about him and wish he was in the starting line up earlier, but I guess the form we were in the players earned their starts.

Hopefully we see this starting 11 a little more often and see where it gets us. (Probably 16th).
