Moving to Spain... 13:19 - Apr 24 with 918 viewsMedwayR

Afternoon all,

I'm considering moving to Spain later this year, and as we have a few ex-pats on here I thought I'd ask for any advice, experiences, tips, contacts etc that you may have, either in general or specific to Spain. Any comments appreciated.

Cheers

Agree with Lewes, the auld pounds dont stretch as far as they used to once changed into Euros.

And if you're thinking about Andalucia in the south, I'd recommend Malaga itself rather than one of the Brit dives down the coast. I lived there myself before and it's got absolutely everything you could want.

I wanna go back now

You get 1.23 euros for £1 now and that is improving all the time at the moment. Especially if France elects this socialist Hollande bloke, should be a good summer for Brits to visit the Eurozone - 1.27-30 could be broken for the first time in years.

sold my house in Valencia now but If I were to go again I would def consider Granada or Sevilla

spent years traveling all over Spain and Andalucia kicks ass. simple as.

I have never lived there but I have plenty of passengers who are desperate to sell and come back .
Good idea to leave a stake in the UK IMO

Firstly, keep a place in the UK for sure and that way you will always sleep at night.

BUT...

If you want to buy in Spain there will never be a better time to grab beachside properties. Never mind Spain's unemployment or the Euro or anything else. They cannot create more land near the beach in the area with the best climate in mainland Europe. Right now you can buy places for less than they would cost to build because so many people are panicing.

Bank repossessions are not all that cheap but they give you the finance because the loans move on with the property in Spain. Concentrate on the old location, location, location mantra and don't get tempted up the hills and away from the beach, shops, restaurants etc.

And if you're borrowing then do it in the currency that your income is in and not like the planks who borrowed in Euros and tried to pay it back from money earned in pounds. You want a home not a currency speculation.

Good luck!

If you need to work to survive in Spain, then I am afraid it will be a mistake to move there. It's a great time to buy a cheap holiday home though.

If being slighty away from the beach and in the hills does suit you, Vejer de La Frontera in Andalucia is very nice.

Only about 20-30 min drive to a number of beaches so not that far away. Very quiet old town but expanding the other side with much more modern apartments. Has a Spanish language school (well, it did when I was last there in 2004) in the old town so good if anyone wants to learn the lingo.

It may not be Spain, but I'd recommend you think about the Basque Country. Great weather, great people, and the best surf in Europe. Seriously cool place.

If you're going there for work you need to have a job sorted before you go. The unemployment rate is higher than in Greece. Unemployment for under-24s is close to 50%.

You should try to be a footballer. The money's pretty good, I hear.

Have a villa in Almeria, smashing part of the country and very quiet. Cannot disagree with anything anybody else says on this thread. Property is used as a holiday home as opposed to a permanent home and would never give up my UK roots. The rate of exchange as you would know can vary from place to place, I use a currency card, FairFX, which I find to be excellent and get a very close rate to the interbank rate. I also understand, though not investigated that Citibank have a eurocheque account which gives the interbank rate. Weather great, people great, (even better if you try and learn the lingo). You would make you monies go much further by getting groceries at the local markets as opposed to the shops. Don't worry about getting a job though, you ain't going to get one! Many Brits have moved back and many more would love to move back but are stuck as they have no UK abode. And don't forget to get medical insurance if you are going for a long stay, and ensure that you FULLY UNDERSTAND the terms and conditions of this!

Hi mate. My oldman lives in Benalmadena Costa on the Costa Del Sol. I go almost every year twice a year and fookin love it out there. I agree with the other poster who said "depends what your going there for" because work really is scarce over there. I went over to live in Puerto Banus for 6 months and loved it. Best time of my life. Id love to go and live with my oldman myself but the work problem stops me. Id say, if u have a plan already then dont even think twice. Just do it. AMAZING!!! :)

Fair play!

It IS amazing over there though. I only just bought my tickets to Bilbao last night. Get there just in time for the Aste Nagusia festivities followed by visits to San Sebastian and La Rioja. Then a drive to Galicia where we'll stay for a week eating every living sea creature possible and finished off with a flight to Granada for my mate's wedding (a fellow R).

LOOOOOOOVELY!
