Knowing that Tesco are not liked in Ireland (we don't mind Marks & Sparks, but Tesco have always struggled), and trying to be Oirish (a huge mistake for companies coming to Ireland) they decided that they'd go full paddywhackery, have green signs, and print all the signs in Irish.
Not even bilingual.
Just in Irish.
IWhat they didn't realise was that Shannon is a New Town, and has a huge population who'd moved from the Six Counties, who back then had no formal access to the Irish.
They'd decided to go Oirish-Tesco, oirishtesco.ie with every single sign in Irish in the one town in Ireland that had hardly any Irish speakers.
I was working on a road job nearby, went in there on their first day, and laughed myself silly. All the other customers were too. You've no idea how funny it was, and the Nordies were in stitches. And took the píss relentlessly - "ere yooo, is this pasta gluten-free, or wha?"

They're still not that popular, at least not in Cork.
They're not the best employers, it is alleged. Other criticisms are not backing enough local/Irish producers, and lying about the origin of certain goods. No idea if those criticisms are valid as I haven't used them in many years.
Aldi and Lidl are flying down here, and Dunnes and SuperValu remain popular. | |
