It's the dreaded 5 subs. Back in the Paleolithic era, you had one sub. Players played 90 minutes. Instead of a legion of "performance" guys you had a little guy with a bucket of water and a magic sponge. In any sport, if you go flat out all the time (fast bowlers, tennis players, distance runners) you are more likely to get injured. Coaches now expect footballers to go flat out every second they're on the pitch. The result is entirely predictable. |

Thanks Clive, a great report, and I’m old enough to remember the Skids, Into the Valley, indeed, further lyrics were ‘this disease is catching, from victory to stone’ as our injury list starts to mount up already. Only my second game attended after the Bolton game, I must be a jinx. I enjoyed watching Kamara and Madsen in midfield, and a game we dominated but rarely looked like scoring. We’ll certainly need to stretch our squad and seeing players out of position to fill gaps. I hope Lamptey is not out for long, if it wasn’t for his injury record, he would definitely be playing for a premier league club. Smyth was frustrating as didn’t seem to offer himself and apart from the missed chance was invisible. The Charlton defence was well marshalled, and they had Burrell well shackled. Still, always take an away point. |

I remember seeing video of Adel playing for Tottenham reserves and thinking I had never seen such a contradictory player: able to glide past half the opposition team yet seemingly with no thought of when to pass the ball to a teammate. Warnock did well to bring out his strengths and contain his weaknesses. That ability Taarabt had to shift his weight and turn other player's legs to water was something special. As you point out, we can be thankful for his weaknesses: they brought him to QPR. It's a shame his career never really blossomed after that.
I didn't realise our record as Charlton was quite so bad. As both us and Charlton lost on Saturday it will be interesting to see who recovers best. Tyreece Campbell seems to have come suddenly come good this season...hopefully we can keep him quiet. |

It can't be easy to recruit when you are not an established Championship club. Scoring was a problem last season and that was never likely to have been solved by Dykes. I wondered if Kelman might get going at some point, but that hasn't happened either. At least Tyreece Campbell has stepped up this season and helped Charlton get off to a flying start. |

Overall I didn't feel that Middlesbrough outclassed us the way they did last season, but they still looked stronger than us. For the goal, Smyth's tackle looked weak, and Cirkin looked out of position. Perhaps the only thing Middlesbrough weren't expecting was Charles' passes through the middle into the heart of the Middlesbrough half.
Vale is an enigma. Bouts of poor passing and shots blasted over the bar interspersed with moments of sublime skill.
With Chair and Kone going down in the first half, it's already looking like some of the injury patterns of last season are re-emerging. The only good thing about the result is that it will temper expectations. |

Anyone else think it was an unfortunate choice to be playing in an all black strip on a baking hot summer’s afternoon? I felt like I was slowly roasting in the S Africa Road stand. I thought our players looked like they were struggling with the heat, particularly in the first half. I reckon Middlesbrough had a 2 or 3 degree advantage in their white strip. |

Refreshing report . Despite the end result loved the way the team battled and went to to toe with £20m Boro .
Great atmosphere on a beautiful September afternoon
Shame about the result but felt their mighty funding has the advantage
Agree with you about flogging players for the benefit of the Sky views -complete waste of players fine efforts I feel this may affect us more that some of the competitor's and plays into clubs who have spent big with their deeper depth of squads |

Concise report.Kone looks like he is carrying an injury but is telling the staff otherwise,but then I am not watching him in training.Agree wrong side started, I understand rotation is needed but against top 5 lesson learned is you have to play your best eleven to even get a point.
Stats wise I understand we are up there in terms of shots on goal, the conversion rate on that will get better
I met you and the family in passing on the canal via a Ursss by the way ( I had the black top on).Actually got another in Jericho. |

The Pinterest reversal says a lot about how shaky these automated systems can be. Seeing something unrelated like https://luckyjet1winindia.com/ , https://plinkostakeindia.com/ around a comment thread would make a spam filter feel less mysterious, but that is completely different from labeling a personal blog as junk with no clear explanation. I definately agree with your bigger point: the first “no” is often just the first person not wanting to deal with the problem. Persistence matters, but so does the part where you stopped trusting the bad host and moved back to something that actually worked. |

@BayardRanger66 That's absolutely fair, I think I was overly harsh on JCS. He's played well this season thus far, and was again the other day. Also agree RE Vale. Think he plays better as an 8 in a system where he gets the ball and plays it on as a sort of cog in the system. His final product has irked me all season thus far (was breathing fire during the Cardiff game). |

Think the rating is a bit harsh on JCS who had been consistently good imo so far this season. On seeing the line up before the game I really didn't fancy the Kone Chair partnership - no pace or ability to get behind the huge Boro defence - feels like JS got the forward partnerships wrong over the 2 home games this week. Think Vale is getting away with things a bit, unlucky in hitting bar/post but in general his delivery and shooting has been poor. Overall though we do look a team who has more ability to compete and I agree that on leaving the ground tbe feeling was of a team/squad that has made serious strides forward. |

I thought the game was somewhat lost when Chair went off and was replaced by Saito. Whilst I admire Koki’s enthusiasm and hard work, he is unfortunately literally lightweight, and personally didn’t think he was the best option of substitute to be made. I would have preferred it to be Alfie Lloyd, who ironically would have been the ideal replacement for Kone when he went off. Overall though we still show great promise as a team, particularly with the much improved second half. Hopefully we can get a better result against Charlton. |

Not easy to change traditions, or to create new ones. Yet tinkering with everything is part of our world, something that has become very obvious in football in recent years. As pointed out by a certain German: 'everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones'. Perhaps that's why we cling to traditions, especially in a country that has lost all sense of direction.
Online pile-ons are not a pretty sight, but perhaps we should keep in mind that are just that, and not blow them out of proportion. Anyway, fair point that the club would do well to liase with supporters.
Agree with JB007007 that Middlesbrough are by far 'our toughest test and a good indicator of where we are', particularly as they showed us up twice last season. Can we handle Lankshear who is in red hot form? |

That's interesting that while Middlesbrough had almost everything in place to go up last year there were some key flaws that prevented the team getting over the line. It sounds like those flaws have been addressed (mostly).
Seny Dieng to Cyprus? What happened? We had high hopes for him. |
