New keeper starts today on 17:49 - Jul 27 with 1728 views | Shun | About a year or so ago it was announced (on the club O/S!) that the pitch was going to be completely torn up in the summer and the same type of pitch used at Wembley would be put in place. It would be costly, we were told, but it would last a number of years and would avoid the annual pitch relaying. Why hasn’t this happened? Obviously it hasn’t happened - we haven’t been told it has and we haven’t been told why it hasn’t either, it’s just sort of been swept under the carpet. We’ve had pitch issues for years and now we come to this fÅ«ck-nugget - a game in July being abandoned after less than 24 hours of rain following the hottest week the town’s seen since records began. That as an isolated incident is embarrassing, but as the latest in a series of pitch fÅ«ck-nuggets it’s deeply, deeply concerning. We can’t keep doing the same half-arsed job of relaying a pitch every summer as clearly that isn’t working, something drastic and radical needs to happen that will ensure an effective surface for years to come, as was supposed to happen when the club made the aforementioned announcement some time ago. The club need to explain why this hasn’t happened and what their plan is for the future.

And if not then, they can do so at the planned meeting with the Trust. Or they could use their website ahead of both those events to fully inform people what has happened over the last 18 months and what will happen going forward. Not hard at all. Let’s see what happens. [Post edited 27 Jul 2019 18:01]

Dave's Daily Drivel. He has a lot of drivelling to do after this embarrassing fiasco. The buck stops with him.

Come on, it's about decision making and accountability, not who was drilling holes at the club.

Maybe but I would have thought the fookers that were, digging the holes need to explain this fookup before we apportion blame.

Did he tell them that the drains have been a problem forever? Did he mention that Rochdale is the wettest town in the UK with population of more than 50,000? What guarantees did he obtain? Is the work insured? Was a proper schedule of the work needed ever done? If so who did it? Has anyone figured out the capacity of the drains to take away 3-4 hours of continual heavy rain? Did the job include clearing the existing drains? Does the pitch have separate drains to those of the car park and stands or is there just one main drain? How much does one of those tents that we put up a couple of times last season actually cost? Because I suspect this season we are going toneed one for about 5 months.

That's only part of it. There's been public statements by the club about their choice of contractor and their product. The original contractor was changed. The decision to change was made by the club. Please also see 49th seasons superb post above. [Post edited 27 Jul 2019 19:02]

I think we can all agree this is a major issue and the hard questions need to be asked. If its proven that the club interfered with the project then heads need to roll. Im pointing the finger at the contractor but what do I know and will we ever get a straight answer?

Those are all valid questions but seriously will the contractor say nobody told us to expect rain. [Post edited 27 Jul 2019 19:09]

Seriously, when it came to the pitch the contractor must've been narrow-minded

With the new board running the club then i presume that the promised wembley pitch didnt materialise due to the cost cutting by the club.

The definition of stupidity is to keep repeating the same thing and expecting a different result. If you keep putting new surfaces on top of a sub-surface infrastructure that is not capable of handling the water that drains through the top surface ........we never see any pictures of the drains under the pitch being renewed or even being rodded, but we do see lots of heavy machinery running up and down stripping old turf off and laying new turf which may well disrupt such drainage as there may, or may not be. The only real solution is to dig down 2 feet all the way around the pitch and run proper drains off the pitch into channels that have direct run off into the main drains on Sandy Lane. At some clubs they achieve this by raising the pitch a couple of feet.

That is another very good point also what needs explaining is why wasnt the work done to replace everything from the bedrock up with an all singing dancing all weather pitch and who made the decision. The money wasted patching up a dog of a pitch must now be more than the original quote of 1.5 million pounds. At least we now know the reasoning for narrowing the pitch which suggests concerns about the main stand side of the pitch were known in advance and well founded.. [Post edited 27 Jul 2019 19:27]

Exactly this - it wouldn't matter if we had the most expensive pitch in the world laid ontop - if the drainage underneath is substandard then the problem will still keep re occurring. Until the drains are sorted the pitch will be a problem.
