The “chucking in doubt” line referred to the line preceding it about sticking to the plan they continued to calmly stick to in the second half. As in if they doubted that works and suddenly start deviating from it, that’s when problems may occur and have an impact.

No suggestion of anything else, only an admiration of that calm confidence displayed in retaining belief in what has got us to a record points total, even when behind in a game.

It's hard to look at last night with anything but dissapointment but the task now is to dust ourselves off and go again. Something we have done better than any Dale side in history this season. My fear has always been that York are just too good, we are an exceptional team but, sadly, I think that they stronger. I'm hoping beyond hope we can somehow hold out and edge it, and it would go down as an outstanding achievement if we do, but I'm doubting it right now. It would be no surprise to see York go perfect between now and the last day but I'm less convinced that we will. I suspect best case scenario is we will need to win on the last day with a draw being enough for them. In a straight shoot out it would take a monumental effort to beat them and I would fear they could blow us away. Either way it's going to be incredibly tough for one set of players and fans to raise themselves for the play offs.

Don't agree DA - this is the time for blind faith. Doubt is insidious. This team and manager have already done enough to deserve to be cheered to the rafters until the last kick of the season - whatever tactics, formation or personnel are adopted. Yes, there have been losses and there will be dark times ahead but only unquestioning belief will help get our team over the line ... 'never surrender'.

That was an absolutely cracking game which would not have been out of place in FL2 or maybe FL1. You are where you are because you are a very good team, but last night we matched you and took more of our chances than you. Well done to your travelling fans as well great support throughout. Now we're off to see how far up the table we can get between now and the end of the season. You and York at the last game should be a bit lively.

Food for thought, the two best defences in the National League meet and 5 goals a scored.

"Blind" faith is a recipe for failure

Only by facing up to doubts, in order to be prepared should the need arise during games, can they be overcome. Not doing so, then facing adversity, leads to panic

As in any other sphere of life, fail to prepare, prepare to fail. It's not just about the system now, but very much about psychological preparedness. At the end of last season, we weren't ready, despite having the better record than the teams who overcame us

Facing up to doubt is a sign of strength, not weakness

Suppose sometimes it’s about how things turn out on the day.

Like last night, played as well as in some victories, only with uncharacteristic defensive mistakes. It happens, especially at our level. That it’s happened so infrequently points to how well coached and focused the players are.

Referenced previously how Hill’s sides lost crucial end of season games (at Wembley and Gillingham the year after), on both occasions we just didn’t turn up and were well beaten. Then there was the collapse at the end of the promotion season including throwing away the title after losing to Notts County. There’s not been a Dale side in over half a century who haven’t experienced those disappointments. We can only hope that like they have with every other record that’s been broken, they can smash through that barrier too.

Agree with a lot of that.

We have far surpassed my expectations for this season, but I’m still realistic when it comes to assessing the strengths of both sides. Have felt for months there would need to be some sign that York may falter just enough to ensure we finish top. That remains the case, even though we have still done much better since the turn of the year than I’d have hoped for.

Prediction pre-season was always top 3 with others form dictating where we end up. I was wrong. It’s top two with the same caveat.

Who could have thought that a once in a lifetime campaign could end up in disappointment!

My concern is when there is something riding on a game we can't cope with the pressure. Spennymoor, Southend PO match, the FA Cup Qualifying games, the games in hand this season. I really hope I'm wrong but I now expect we will face Southend again in the playoffs and they will have the psychological advantage.

I would like to see Tyler Smith start on Saturday. He has scored against Tamworth already this season, and I feel Rodney is so desperate to score that he is trying too hard when a pass would be better.

All managers will know now from recordings that the high press is likely to be our undoing.
So we need to start on the front foot. Pettit has shown he can score, but Barlow and Allarakhia must contribute too.

To be fair James, that's not entirely accurate about the games in hand.

If you class games in hand as postponed/rearranged/played after everyone else, we've only lost to Southend and drawn with Scunthorpe. We won all the others (Solihull Moors, Southend, Boreham Wood, Forest Green & Brackley).

I agree with you about giving Smith a start, but I wonder if we will retain Rodney's physicality against an always physical Tamworth team.

I'd be swapping Barlow for someone on Saturday too.

To be fair, we usually start most games on the front foot. Last night was the first time we have conceded inside the first ten minutes since Barnet at home 13 months ago. We have scored 12 goals inside the first ten minutes in the same time period.

Its noticeable we have shipped 6 goals in the last 4 games- not like us at all- and happens to be the 4 games Gilmour has missed. Is this the time to launch Ed Francis specifically in the Gilmour role. Too many changes?

I'm not an expert on tactics but hasn't Pettit been playing the 'Gilmour' role and doing a damn fine job of it? I'd be tempted to start the same team as last night on Saturday, not sure Smith is up to a full game as he looked like he was blowing out of his arse within 20 mins of his introduction. I like him coming off the bench if we need a goal. I'm not a huge Allarakhia fan but not really sure who'd start ahead of him and I've still got faith that Barlow and Rodney could have a big part to play in the destiny of the title.

Probably not (re Francis) and making a change after our first defeat this year (mid-March) might be unwise. Pettit has put himself forward and would be almost undroppable right now, even if Gilmour were fit

I think we do need more from Barlow and Allarakhia, the latter in particular and if Francis were to start it'd be to strengthen our right-hand side at his expense

Actually thought Pettit was a bit below par last night compared to previous games, but he’s being playing that well that there were comments about not missing Gilmour after Saturday.
Do agree with the argument Gilmour’s presence might have seen us concede less, purely because he’s so good at recognising danger.

Francis is a left footed central midfielder, when he started he took the Gilmour role as Pettit has since. Barlow was on the left of the forward three last night, before Rodney went from the right to that side in the second half with Smith on the right.
East is allowed a lot of freedom to drift to the right, as noted previously this leaves us with one in the centre of the park at times. Our formation is very attack focused, that in itself can lead to openings for the opposition unless everyone is totally on it. We weren’t last night - see the first goal for perfect evidence of this.

Allarakhia was poor last night and I think he’s better on the left when he can go both ways. There is the potential to swap him with Moss but either way that triumvirate on the right misses TAR linking with East and Gordon.

Then there is the inconsistencies in the no.10 role… It may appear we are being a bit picky but these are valid constructive criticisms around where we could be better. To still have 91 points and think we’re not firing on all cylinders is a compliment in itself.

So thehighlights were good, from the away end I seriously thought the Smith header that hit the bar was a cross come shot.
You can’t really fault the first Southend goal. But in both the second and third goals there seemed to be indecision about who would go with the runner. We lost on the night in an entertaining game, that sadly wasn’t an enjoyable watch after Southend’s third. In the lat 15 minutes Southend did a Rochdale on us and printed any goal scoring opportunities. Credit to Kevin Maher in virtually 3 games this season his side has made us look ordinary for long spells. Weird that he has rarely been able to do that against other top teams.
So can we revert to type and put a winning run together after a defeat. An 8 game winning run would be perfect.
Proud of my team.

Completely agree on missing TAR down the right. We were also crying out for someone like Pritchard to be able to bring on later on in my opinion. I hope we can get someone in.

Allarakhia hasn't seemed to be able to find his pre-AFCON form since his return, I hope he can come back from this latest call-up full of confidence for the crunch end of season games - he can at least be a game-changer from the bench.

Looking forward to Saturday and hopeful of another impressive bounce back. We must at the very least remain unbeaten until that York game because they surely will be.

There's no "surely" about anything - they lost three games ago

Losing at Southend was no disgrace, but every single fixture ramps the pressure up now. The side that can hold their nerve will emerge on top

You are correct, the mindgames will affect both teams. Pressure is a funny thing, some people thrive on it others fold under it, winners tend to be in the thrive group..Both teams have bounced back well from occasional reversals, but as the seasons end approaches every game becomes more important, the pressure increases... No one wants to be the person who made the mistake that spoiled it all.
I guess this is where the management teams earn thèir wages..
From our perspective, we began behind York as favourites, so we have probably exceeded expectations so far. A second crack at the playoffs would hardly be failure, but the opportunity is there to take the Trophy.. Indeed, but for the early season cock up at Brackley and the pitch hiatus that took us to Accrington, we could be 8 points clear. 8 games, 8 wins is a huge task, but that is the target.....York may falter, but they are relying us to do so..the next 12 hours of football will decide...

Yes! Think of the Morecambe game. They only got the extra 2 points in the 99th minute.

You can't mention the Brackley game and the match v Hartlepool at Accrington (both of which we may still have lost anyway) without also mentioning the defeat at York and how different the top of the table would have been with an alternative outcome.

The fact that you can only highlight 3 or 4 games for either side after 38 games played shows how well both teams have done and how far ahead they are of the chasing pack.

Who would have thought back in Aug that come game 39 we would be guaranteed a shot at promotion one way or another.
