Football is all about goals, we have had as many big chances as they have, we havent taken as many, but we have definitely given away more chances than we normally would, Southend are on it and the early goals have increased their confidence.

'Why should they change' because its blatantly not going to work against every single team in the league, we're getting battered and playing every pass across our own back line isnt working against a team so mobile and willing to close us down.
The defending is horrific but we are creating a lot of our own problems, half time cant come soon enough just as they crash the post with yet another shot at goal. |
Have to say that Southend have done a really good job on our defence down both flanks, and have made us look very easy to play against.
This is a game where we are really missing Gilmour and Pritchard but absolutely full credit to Southend for doing exactly what they did in the play off game last season and closing us down quickly.
Big big half time talk from Jim. Can we step up? There are goals to be had at both ends.

Pathetic across the back.
Mani's unusually bad first touch keeps putting us in trouble. Allarakhia and Rodney are passengers when we don't have the ball. I presume that's why Moss was sent to the right to split them up even at the cost of him leaving Scott-Morris.
Their keeper is full of mistakes and we should be sticking everything on him. Couldn't they see that in the 1.9 games previously this season? |  | | |

Our games against Southend. always entertaining. A good game, always a difficult fixture against an energetic, hard working southend side, roarded on by 8000+ fans. We weren't bad, but matched against an organised pressing side today who wanted to dictate the game. We were always a threat, especially and dangerous, more so the 2nd half, when Southend appeared to lose some shape. Thought whatmuff may be disappointed with the 3rd goal, which gave us a mountain to climb. Two great teams, just Southend didn't have to rely on luck, just better tonight. [Post edited 17 Mar 22:17]

We’ve been defensively sound all season bar the off periods in games (as noted crucial period against York and Halifax). Tonight, even in the second half when we were much better, those defensive errors were too regular and ultimately why we lost.
Even then we scored twice, created multiple good situations which we should have done better with (as usual), and if Smith’s header had been a few inches lower who knows how the game could have turned out.
Too many players, especially at the back, had an off night but that can be forgiven. There’s nothing we could have done differently as a collective to change the outcome apart from get the basics right. |  |

If it comes down to bottle, I think we have the right team, and every chance they take us all the way.
These players are battling hard for Mcnulty; they love him.
More crucial is the Man management during the game. I remember In the play-offs against Southend last year after 3-1 up we became toothless , taking off the days effective players, I think Barlow and Allarikia. and they rained down a storm on us. We brought it on ourselves. | | | |

Just got back in. Won’t comment on the game tonight because from that north bank end you can’t really decipher anything happing at the other end. Do though want to mention that the Southend side of the North bank was rammed with vocal support. Not unexpectedly the U Block were unable to turn up in numbers tonight. But I have to say virtually all the Dale crowd were vocal in their support and gave it a good go. I thought my sing days at football were long gone but at the age of 64 my not so dulcet tones made a comeback. Credit to all for making as much noise as possible tonight.
One anecdote that gave me a smile was the queue at the local chippy. After the game it just wasn’t moving and it turned out the Dale management had stuck in an order for 26 lots of fish and chips. At least we stuff them at something tonight. | | | |

Every game has been a big game for the last couple of months because of York’s ridiculous form which has matched ours, in fact slightly surpassing it.
We had 39 points from the last 15 games before tonight. Beyond the expectations of any realistic fan. York got 40. Did they have their blip we’d hoped for? Not really. If we hadn’t performed under that pressure the league would be already gone.
There’s never been any doubt in mentality so far, only individuals not performing to their usual high standards (EEL at York for example). Even tonight it was obvious there was a calm confidence they could get back into the game by sticking to what has got us this far. Chucking in doubt would only impact our chances, the players looked to realise that. Even if they’d also acknowledge many weren’t playing at the level they know they can.
That second half was very encouraging on that front. If York win the league, they’ll deserve it because they’ll have outperformed a club who have maximum belief in what they’re doing. | |

You're suggesting an influence from outside, whereas i'm suggesting that such things are better faced up to both without and within the club so that when each game kicks off, all are prepared. I hope that's what's happening, just like actors who go out onto a stage having faced up to their nerves and having acknowledged them, overcome them in a healthy way which then enhances performance | |

The “chucking in doubt” line referred to the line preceding it about sticking to the plan they continued to calmly stick to in the second half. As in if they doubted that works and suddenly start deviating from it, that’s when problems may occur and have an impact.
No suggestion of anything else, only an admiration of that calm confidence displayed in retaining belief in what has got us to a record points total, even when behind in a game. | |
