I'm hoping a sizeable chunk of that £16.5 billion goes on fishery protection vessels in case of no deal. We don't want Hans, Pierre or Carlos stealing our fish FFS. Lessons should have been learned from the last Cod War when those bloody Icelandics got the better of us.

I'm looking forward to the launch of Fishery Protection Vessel HMS Boris Johnson some time in 2022-23...

Probably not a good idea to name it after the captain of a sinking ship 1885! 😉

I see what you did there, Sogs..!

Should we go for the 'SS Captain Hindsight' instead? Actually the 'SS Jeremy Corbyn' would be even more appropriate, yes?

So the owner of the Mail has fifty million pounds worth of houses in the Uk all registered in the BVI and all his flash cars in an underground garage registered in St Lucia.

Or Boaty McBoatface?

On the same news bulletin last night where they reported on the increase in defence spending (who were are planning on defending ourselves against still isn’t certain) they were saying that the public sector can expect another pay freeze. This on top of 10 years of pay freezes or below inflation increases.

Perhaps we have our values the wrong way round?

Oh, and Priti Patel seems set to keep her job despite breaking the ministerial code and bullying staff so it seems. Wonderful. Perhaps we could save money on defence by sticking her on a fishing boat and sailing her up and down the Channel with a loudhailer?

Islamic terrorists , Russia the Chinese .....

The next war will not be fought with tanks and guns SoG's it will be in cyberspace as mentioned an enemy could totally destroy the countries infrastructure if we do not protect ourselves.

The Chinese have reportedly used microwave weapons against Indian troops in the Himalayas also.

Ah! If only these people had invaded before Johnson announced the extra spending measures! 🥴

😉

Sadly no amount of extra spending will give protection against lone wolf psychos who have nothing better to do than blow themselves and others to pieces.

As for Russia and China, we shall be best pals when we have trade deals after we fully leave the EU!

Seriously though, there is no point becoming ruler of the seas again (or whatever guff he came out with). As you say, future wars will be fought differently. Spending money on ships and planes is a complete waste. And and don’t get me started on Trident!

So what you’re essentially saying is there’s no point in haveing an effective navy. That would be the same navy that’s constantly helped out in humanitarian hotsposts over the last few decades would it?

You probably don’t believe in NATO and the balance of power and all that, but the RN does have its uses (even if it also has the down side of keeping skates employed in the dockyard). Still, if you disagree with it as a deterrent, you could always hang a tampon or two on the chainlink fence around HMS Collingwood or Nelson I guess. That normally works.

I am saying there is no point in pretending to rule the waves in this day and age and to spend new money on new ships in the current climate when we can give people a decent living wage and provide kids with free school meals.
Yes I believe in NATO.
This is about announcing EXTRA money for something that is not essential in 2020.
Who was bothered about defence spending unless I missed all the threads on here crying out for more money for it?
It’s all about priorities Chesh. I don’t think the current government have them in the right order.

So this problem of a working wage and feeding school kids is all down to decades of Tory misrule I suppose, but luckily you have the magic bullet.

Bringing the RN up to date is not “ruling the waves” and is overdue. They provide an essential service for our security, humanitarian issues and trade.

No new ships ?

Let's bring HMS Victory out of retirement.

You do realise that technology will keep our sailors alive and that costs. There are a lot of ex forces on this site and I for one am proud of them . You seem to think they've are expendable ( I don't really but you seem to know how to rub people the wrong way )

Sometimes I do wonder about you SoG's.

It was his turn of phrase Chesh, not mine. The RN has also been underfunding the RN for years, so strange that now if all times they decide to spend more.
No I don’t have a magic bullet but of course it is down to the last ten years of enforced austerity under the Tories. They are the ones who have governed for a decade.
As for finding a magic bullet, perhaps give the public sector workers a decent pay rise instead of buying new ships and planes that will never be used for the purpose they are being built?

This idea that the ToryLib dem alliance went for austerity seemingly for the fun of it is a nonsense and you know it.

It was a response to a global crisis. Ok, that crisis may not all have been down to your hero Mr. Brown (although selling off gold at the bottom of the market and screwing over pension schemes with his ACT raid certainly didn’t help). You could argue they went too far or too long but something had to be done.

Why should public sector workers get a pay rise when they’re now ahead of the curve, in many/most cases have job security whilst those in the private sector are losing jobs left right and centre? Have you ever run a business and told someone they’ve just lost their job?

As for ships never being used for the reason they’re built - you clearly don’t agree with the deterrent factor but many/the majority do.

We don’t have any at the moment? Why do we need more when we know that any future conflicts will be fought differently? And why now, at this precise moment after cutting defence spending for the last 10 years? Does that make any sense, especially in the middle of a pandemic? Don’t you find it strange that we have a section of the public supporting an increase in defence spending so soon after supporting the same people for refusing free school meals for kids?
As I say, this country has its priorities ar5e about face.

no one is saying starving kids should go hungry (dispute that there are any) but recognise the fact that the government have/had already dished out money to anyone who needed it.

Have they had their pay frozen for years or increased by less than the rate of inflation when it hasn’t been frozen? The government doesn’t pay private sector workers. We are talking here about government policy on pay for the people they employ.

The Government doesn't pay private sector workers? No, but they receive a huge amount from them in Income Tax and Corporation Tax (from their employers) which goes to pay the public sector.

Virtually no--one has any kind of job security in the private sector and their pensions are way below that of the public sector. When was the last time you saw say Hants County Council for example, make mass redundancies? What's that you say? Never?

Meanwhile the public sector worker earns on average 1% less per hour than a private sector worker (2017 ONS statistics show) - but has much better job security and pension. So all in all they're not doing as badly as you make out.

And you didn't answer my question. Have you personally ever had to fire someone or make them redundant?

Can’t speak for Hants CC, but have worked for Southampton City Council for over 30 years and in last 10years, as government funding has been reduced, they have made significant redundancies. My specialist section for example used to have 10 professionally qualified members and now had 3. Not only that but many sections are enable to get staff in to replace people leaving because the wages are not competitive with equivalent posts in the private sector. I have several times been close to being one of those being made redundant as part of these cost cutting exercises.
And have had to sack a couple of members of staff myself, not a pleasant situation.

As for the pension I will receive when I retire, I pay around 8.5% of my salary into my pension each month, have done for over 40years and have been prepared to be be paid less in wages compared to others similarly qualified for the of receiving the pension I will receive. But those critical of our pensions seem to think we get this benefit as a perk, but our input in lower wages and personal monthly contribution often ignored.

So you have accepted a lower wage in order to get a better pension? But are still moaning about it? So far as i know, many parts of the public sector have notably more attractive vacation allowances too, again, accepted a a trade off for perceived lack of pay increases.

The NHS have rightly received much praise in past months. But for decades, every government (all flavours) have put in significant extra funds for new treatments, and almost on every occasion, about 90% has gone on wage increases because Doctors, Nurses and ancillary workers have taken the "me first" approach. It's no wonder governments go for pay freezes after getting their fingers burned.

The head of the fireman's union as good as said. "You can stick your clapping in appreciation, we want more money," recently

It is hardly surprising that those in the private sector (and many are self employed) have little sympathy for public sector workers even when it is merited. That's not a political position, it's a moral one.

More ignorant & unintelligent ramblings re; the Royal Navy.

Even you surely remember not so long ago when ships in the Arabian Gulf were being hijacked by Iranian military forces? Plenty of those ships were (and still are) UK and EU registered. Should we just leave the poor old merchant sailors to whatever fate comes their way? Or should we protect our interests?

What about the pirates off the coast of Somalia? Thanks to British & foreign warships, cases of piracy there have all but disappeared. Many parts of the globe have seen piracy increase through similar attacks recently. Should we just shirk our responsibilities here too?

What about protecting UK waters & fish stocks?

You say we're wasting money on ships & planes. What a truly stupid thing to say SOG - even by your standards. Warships have a lifespan and need replacing at the end of it. Technology moves fast & modern warfare needs to move with it. I don't think you realise what's required when a RN battle group puts to sea. One of our new carriers will need destroyers with it to protect it from air threats & frigates to protect it from submarine threats. It will also require a nuclear sub below the waves for extra security. Then there's the auxiliary ships like fueling tankers & dry goods/food support ships (RFA).

We are an island nation and 95% of UK trade goes via the sea. Those ships need protecting from foreign states, pirates, and terrorists. We currently have just 19 surface ships/escorts in the Royal Navy - an absolutely pathetic number.

As for Trident, it's doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing ever since it was implemented - preventing a nuclear war. As I've said to you before; the world is more dangerous nowadays than it's ever been. The Russians are getting more bolshy, the Chinese are building a huge military capability, Iran has a nuclear weapon, North Korea is run by a crack-pot, and I wouldn't trust several other ME/Arab countries from being overthrown one day & the new dictatorship getting their hands on nuclear devices whilst claiming jihad and shouting "Allāhu ʾakbar" before pressing a few buttons here & there - just before armagheddon for the rest of us...

Old School is Cool

I appreciate the time that you spent in your response 1885 and don’t disagree with what you say. My point is why now after years of underfunding the armed forces and everything else? We have a navy. We have an Air Force. Yes things need to be replaced. Why now exactly? In the middle of a pandemic when people are struggling financially all of a sudden defence is a concern and billions of pounds have been earmarked for things that really are not essential at this point in time. As for nuclear war, it hasn’t happened since 1945 and there is a reason for that. No one will launch a nuclear missile any more.
