Does Russell Martin need to take a break to get his head together ? 12:25 - Feb 25 with 1759 viewssaintmark1976

On the way home yesterday I listened on the radio to the managers interview with Adam Blackmore.Quite understandably Martin was disappointed and was somewhat tetchy.

However, if I heard it correctly Martin confirmed that he had become involved in an argument with a home fan seated behind the Saints dugout.

I watched the match highlights this morning and when the game finished Martin refused to shake hands with the Millwall keeper.

Perhaps it would be a good time for Martin to take a break from the pressure of management, let someone else take the team at Liverpool and then come back refreshed for the remainder of the league season beginning on Saturday.

There are certainly comparisons with a certain Nathan Jones, where the pressure is definitely getting to him. He is starting to panic, which is obviously not a good thing. However, I would rather a manager that cares and shows such passion (within reason). But of course we don't want a manager having a break down or losing the plot. RM was clearly angry with the players. It was far too tippy tappy yet again, not aggressive enough, too slow but is that tactics or is it the players? Bearing in mind, that during our 25 game unbeaten run, we played possession football and it worked, but it much quicker and more aggressive. Why has that aggressive and quick play suddenly stopped?

He seems to duck out of press conferences and interviews for Cup games, and leave it to his minion.

Nothing wrong with being a bad loser, it hasn’t done Klopp or Guardiola any harm.

His results do seem to go in streaks of a few consecutive defeats mixed in with unbeaten runs. He did this at Swansea as well.

It’s a long season; that’s the job he is in.

Reality check initially is that your suggestion is just not going to happen, although i think you may be right that he needs some chill out pills

His issue is that he is too stubborn to change a system of play that he believes in and one could argue that a 25 game unbeaten record confirms that. Trouble is every other manager now knows that he won't change and he is being caught out as we just cannot break through a defence that just sticks by their guns and we get caught out on the break

It seems that the message to the players is carry on tippy tapping and ocassionally we will get through

If we were playing against better opposition with that style of play, and better managers there is no way we would have had that run

Reading a newspaper report this morning, which was all about how wonderful the hooligan supporters are and supporting their returning messiah, was that when asked about the style of play he said it was nothing to do with that but that our players (defenders) were cr@p and bad mistakes on the field cost us the game

Bring back the days when clubs had good, honest, straight-talking managers - like Nigel Adkins. He never cared for all this bollocks managers go on about these days. He got on with the job. Managers go on about this system, that system, dynamics, percentages, blah, blah feckin blah.

It's football. It's quite a simple game. Get down the other end and score. Some managers (RM) overthink and over-complicate it all. The fans are confused - let alone the players.

Old School is Cool

Agreed, it's a simple game so keep it simple.
It's pointless asking players to do things that they are not comfortable with or not any good at.
Some players actually look confused & afraid to express themselves.
Just play the best players in their best position & you've got half a chance.
But we all know that RM is so stubborn & determined to play possession based football that he just will not change.
That will be his & our downfall.

Liverpool 3rds v Southampton Reserves?
I’m surprised some of the Liverpool players are allowed to play a midweek evening game that could go to ET & Pens, surely they’ve got school in the morning?

I was a bit disappointed in Russell Martin's interview on ITV.
He reckons he was incredibly proud of the team tonight.
No mention of two goals we gave away and the poor performances of half the team against a team of young lads.

We have no leaders on the pitch
Aribo played wel tonight but we are a weak side
Our profligacy cost us yet again
When we will learn that goals win games and to do that you need to pay out for a striker and they cost big money, you have to speculate to accumulate

All of his post match comments are the same win lose or draw.
Even after we've had a shocker (plenty of those lately) he says he's immensely proud of his players.
Come on RM be honest & when they've under performed let them know that & shake them up a bit.
Nathan Jones admitted he was guilty of pandering up to the players, that's exactly what you are doing so come clean & admit it.
