Puel was much maligned as being too negative, but few people take into account the circumstances that season, he arrived to find one central defender wanting away in Jose Fonte demanding a transfer to Manchester United in a deal set up by his new agent in collusion with another client Joe Mourinho. By January he had lost not only Fonte in a transfer to West Ham but Van Dijk to injury, so he truly had to adapt his tactics to not only get us through the League cup semi final at Anfield, but the rest of the season. As Frannie says in terms of results, ie 8th in the League & a major cup final, this was not only perhaps our best season in the last 20 years but arguably in the top half dozen or so seasons in our history. You won't find many people giving him credit for that though, he lost the fans by playing a weakened team at Sparta Prague & Inter Milan, thus costing us a run in the Europa League

And against Beer Sheva. He played Hesketh in midfield out there, if memory serves.

Yes he actually played quite a strong side at Beer Sheeva, but Hesketh in midfield was a mistake and he was replaced after 35 minutes by Tadic.

| Ranking Saints Managers over the last 20 years on 12:50 - Oct 29 with 2843 views | SonicBoom | I don't know about exact timings but in order of teams I enjoyed watching the most I'd say Strachan, Koeman and Poch. As for the worst well plenty were forgettable. Even Jones wasn't here long enough to really annoy me. I hated the boring football played by Martin and I found Puel to be the least charismatic manager I've ever seen. | | | |
| Ranking Saints Managers over the last 20 years on 13:03 - Oct 29 with 2824 views | DorsetIan | It's a crowded field but Jones has got to be the worst of a very bad bunch in recent years. He was out of his depth on the field but, as unlike some of the other contenders, he was even worse when it came to representing the club off it. At times it really felt like we had a madman in charge. | |

The coont took us down in 2005. And then pissed up our first season back in the Championship with stellar signings like Dennis Wise and Darryl Powell.

Koeman Poch Adkins Just outside the 20 year bracket, but Hoddle had a bunch of mediocrity playing very well IMHO.

Just to clarify it's personal opinion. Anyone can look up stats, but for most of us fans it's on the highlight feelings and god damn frustrations. For me it's Best : Koeman Poch Adkins Worst : Still Jones Poortvliet Shout out for George Burley who nearly made my top 3. I think he was quite underrated. Russell Martin almost made my worst 3, but I think he'd have done a better job with the same players that Will Still has at his availability. I almost treat Juric as an interim manager because I don't think he was ever going to stay around long term.

Given it's opinion not stats and given i didn't realise twitchy qualified i'll change mine then to: Best 1. Koeman 2. Adkins 3. Poch Worst (most hated at 1) 1. Redknapp 2. Redknapp 3. Redknapp just outside that, Martin

I liked him until he played for a 0-0 in final group game at home, obviously go 1 down with 15 to go throws on forwards we batter them get level and can’t find the winner, if he’d gone for the win we would have won easy, that was one of the most pissed off I’ve been after a football match.

Van Sulk also missed a sitter out in Israel. Cocklebreath is right about the home game against Beer Sheva. I was distraught at the end of that game, we should have gone deep into that competition.

This. Beer Sheeva 'at home' was nothing short of a disgrace. Prague away passed me off royally as well. That European stuff sadly turned me on Puel after the hard work to get there.

| Ranking Saints Managers over the last 20 years on 17:16 - Oct 30 with 2200 views | kernow | Koeman - best PL points tally under him. Respected, no nonsense boss. Didn’t hit it off with Les Reed so left. Players earnt their wage or they were out on their ear. Brought in some excellent players after the fire sale to the red scousers. Pochettino - brought in a whole new level of fitness and mental toughness to the squad. Disappointed when he left and less than enamoured when he suddenly started speaking English. Strachan - Got the team fit , organised and playing to their strengths after some less than impressive predecessors. Disappointed when he left but his boss was Rupert Lowe so who could blame him. Hoddle - maybe more than 20 years ago but a great motivator and tactician. Such a pity his spiritual home came a calling. Appalling God botherer. Adkins - by far the most successful Saints manager in the last 20 years. Pardew - got them organised and playing despite the season on -12 points. Strange departure , hit on Fonte’s wife, allegedly. Nigel Pearson - dug us out of a hole and was rewarded by Rupert with his P45. Puel - Good defensive coach. Played Liverpool four times that season without conceding. None of the rest worth a mention except for the cockney, cheeky chappie, freeman of the city of Portsmouth who will go down in history as the worst Saints coach ever. | | | |
