Never actually played for Villa but scored 10 goals from the wing for Preston on loan last season so seems on ok signing.

Right footed left winger who cuts in and shoots, sound familiar, if we get him then perhaps Scienza will go, given that we could use Tom Fellows on the right as the RFLW cutting in, I would think that this is more his agent stirring things up

He scored most of his goals when he was playing centrally. He played both left wing and centrally, so I'm not sure about this. Where is he going to play? I hope we haven't gone back to our old mistake of signing utility forwards who supposedly can play anywhere up front, but actually don't fit in anywhere.

Does he offer anything that Cameron Archer doesn't? Archer had a bigger reputation when he was at Villa.

Some good points, he isnt a big centre forward more a Cameron Archer type as you say a utility forward where you arent sure is he is better out wide or centrally.

In which case would we not be better keeping Arscher who still has two years left on his contract.

Last season under Tonda we seemed to like a central striker with two wide men, rather than a front two, so where would Dobbin fit in

Lewis Dobbin is a winger who can score a goal every 4 or 5 games at this level. That goal he scored against McCarthy in Preston's 2-0 win at St Mary's last season triggered big anti-Still demonstrations. Preston fans were singing, "Getting sacked in the morning" and Saints fans were singing, "Sport Republic get out of our club." I think that may have got noticed.

Saints made Preston look like world beaters that day so it may well have been Dobbin's best game of the season, although their best player was the young Everton loanee, Harrison Armstrong. They beat us so comfortably that I remember saying, "They're the best team I've seen at St Mary's this season." So I was surprised by their later results which showed they were, in fact, just mediocre. They finished 14th.

Not sure on what you base that on, at 23 Dobbin got 12 goals in 39 games for Preston last season, whereas Archer in 21/22 aged 20 got 10 in 20 games for Preston, the following season 22/23 he got 11 in 20 for Middlesbrough on loan.

Archer has the better strike rate

His breakout form was for Preston and there he mostly played centrally. The Lancashire Post says: "Dobbin is a winger by trade but was used centrally last season - mostly as a number ten but also in a front two." So, maybe he is the alternative no. 10 that Dragan has said we will sign.

Sounds to me (unfortunately) like another utility forward. Hopefully we're not going to try and make him a centre forward, as we have done with others, and hopefully he's good enough as either a winger or a no. 10 to justify a place in the team.

https://www.lep.co.uk/sport/fo

Maybe the only reason we signed him was to piss Boro off.

Will Dobbin do better? Archer's record at Saints is poor because he's been forced to play as a centre forward for most of his time, which isn't his natural position. If Dobbin is asked to play as a lone striker like Archer has been, he probably won't do any better.

Archer's best game for Saints came late last season when he played wide left in place of Leo for one game. He was named player of the match. He'd also play well if he played in a front 2, like Dobbin did last season. But we don't play with a front 2, so it's not clear that Dobbin will fit in any better than Archer.

Yes, but not at Saints

Archers strike rate at Saints last season was 4 goals in 996 minutes so effectively a goal every 249 minutes ( 3 Assists ie 1 every 332 mins)

Dobbin scored 10 goals in 2,619 minutes so effectively a goal every 262 minutes (8 assists ie 1 every 328 mins)

So Archers strike rate in the Championship was better.

But Archer was playing in a team which would have dominated the ball a lot more, and surely therefore created a lot more chances.

I’m not going into bloody xG nonsense, but you get the gist.

Im not going into xg, im just going by how many minutes that a player takes to score each goal, yes some players will be playing in better teams but end of the day its about putting the ball in the net.

Preston were up in the top 8 for most of the season

Almost half of Archers minutes were played under Will Still when we most certainly werent dominating the ball and creating more chances.

Is it wise to buy a player called Dobbin?

Seriously though he’s not what we need. We already have players in that position like Edozie, Matsuki, Archer, Fellows etc

What we desperately need is a big 20+ goal per season striker

Yep that’s the way Dirk. 👍If you want to find out about a player go on their fans forum . He’s highly rated and Wolves and Middlesbrough were interested . When fans are pissed off a player is leaving it tells you everything.

Here’s one comment

He's been our best player and £4.5m is an absolute bargain! He will sell on for at least double that so it's a no brainer IF the PNE money people can see that. ( The price was pushed up to 9 million because there were several clubs after him)

I have every confidence now in whats Spors is doing as our last few signings have been great Azaz, Larin , Peretz for example . I’m surprised people don’t have more confidence in our recruitment now .

Depends which fans you're asking. By all accounts, he really struggled at West Brom....

https://www.westbromnews.co.uk

Quotes like "Dobbin really needs to work on his hold up play" and "Wallace isn't a CF and neither is Dobbin" confirm my view that if he's being bought as a Ross replacement then we're in big trouble.

If he's being bought as a winger/10, then fair enough, but I don't think the club will have spent £9m plus add-ons just for a reserve, so I wonder who he's replacing.

He also scored against us home and away. Like I said I believe in our recruitment team. Let them get on with it they’ve proved they know what they’re doing . Dobbin was in high demand I know that .

Moyes ruined Preston’s season by recalling Armstrong from loan at PNE and then have him sitting on the bench with Rohl, George, Dibling and Aznou.

I like Dobbin, played well whenever he came on for Everton, mostly as a sub, fast and direct, knows where the net is. Still only 23 so he has some good years left in him, hopefully.

Yep I agree. I like the way we are buying the best championship players from other clubs. That’s the way to go , they don’t cost a fortune in relative terms and they get you right up the table because they’re the best players in the league.

Azaz ,Fellows ,Stewart ,Bree , Wood now Dobbin. All highly rated by fans and managers who have watched them week in week out at their former clubs. You can’t get better praise than that.
