For me, I’m 60 this year. My top three which bring back memories. For good and bad reasons are of course from the early eighties . They are , The Jam ( Down in the tube station at midnight), The Specials ( Ghost town) and Joy Division ( shadowplay). Listening to it now its all quite depressing. I guess though being a teenager in the early eighties it was like that. That’s why I think (for me) these songs sum it up then. If you’re roughly my age, what were you listening too

I would have had The Stranglers, Joy Division/Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, The Clash all in there somewhere
You’ve mentioned many bands that I saw live. The point of the post was the tunes which made a difference in your life. I can also say The Damned , Stiff Little Fingers and of course The Clash made a big impact for me. I saw The Stranglers in Copenhagen a few years ago. Think that’s probably the 5th time I’ve seen them They were all fantastic, but for me those three songs I’ve mentioned sum up my early teenage years.

So many happy memories of being a teenager and growing up with the best music ever. Punk came along in the mid-70's and then the New Romantic scene (of which I loved and spent a small fortune on clothing, immaculate haircuts, eyeliner etc each payday haha).
So many records to choose from - but one that I still play often today is Marquee Moon by Television (1977) and that fabulous guitar solo midway through. Any excuse for Friday choons...

At the risk of overstating, that record literally changed my life, I was 15 when I bought it and whilst I was interested in music i didn't have the subsequent obsession that ive had ever since Not only was the album brilliant, the attitude and they way they dressed was very important, that's what I want to be like my 15 year old self said
Everything else followed on from buying that cassette
So I'd say Waterfall and II Am The Resurrection from that record and A Town Called Malice by The Jam as its a song about my home town and there wasn't much to be excited about growing up in Woking in the 1980s

That’s true. I would say late 70s early 80s was a game changer for me music wise. I was about 13/14 years old when I first started buying records. My first record I bought was The Damned, New Rose. I think (if my memory serves me right) it was released at the end of 75. Before any one had heard of the Sex Pistols. I think as a teenager then it was a pivotal era in music history. Agree about Tubeway Army, I would also say early Kraftwerk. If you listen to Autobahn it sums up going from the 70s to 80s. I remember watching the video, done in b/w and very bleak. They set the trend for future New Romantics, most would admit they were influenced by Kraftwerk.

They were also the first punk band to split up and then the first to reform, they are still going , many line up changes over the years the only constant member being Dave Vanian, at the moment they have 3 of the original 4 in the band

Unfortunately for me, i had an older sister and she heavily influenced my early years music. I think my first record was Starship Nothings going to stop it and first album was Howard Jones Humans Lib. My first CD was even worse - The best of Bananarama ffs. To be fair i only bought the cd because it had 18 tracks and i thought that was amazing..
I remember being in the 3rd Yr of comprehensive and some older lad brought an album into school. Dunno why. It was in the city by the jam. I could see the cover and the band name sprayed on white tiles and I remember thinking what the hell is that. That started a life long love. I liked the clash etc etc but for me the jam just had better tunes, better lyrics and seemed to understand being young and British. The clash were great but the longer they went on the more they seemed to want to be American.

Fair play for admitting it, Im surprised that the "Best" of Bananarama had 18 tracks, I didnt think they had that many overall.

As a solo artist he’s done (in my opinion) better music than he ever did with The Jam. I don’t think he split from The Jam to be French, he did it to come further in his career. I saw him in 2010 when he came back to Woking and played at the leisure centre with all the proceeds going to a local hospice
Played a very Jam heavy set with Bruce Foxton coming on for 3 songs
Wildwood and 22 Dreams are my two favorites of his solo lps
The track he released on the Ghost Box label was a pleasant surprise too, about as far away from dadrock as you can get
