FA Cup 3rd round ... Swansea 2 v 2 Crystal Palace 5th January 1980 12:43 - Jan 5 with 4519 viewstheloneranger

40 years ago today we drew 2-2 with Terry Venables "Team of the Eighties" Crystal Palace at the Vetch, which was the beginning of 3 epic FA Cup matches.

The replay at Palace ending 3-3, and the 2nd replay, a lively encounter for both players and supporters 😂 at Ninian Park ended with us winning 2-1.

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

I was also at all 3 of these games. As other have said Giles was superb in the game in Cardiff. It was a very volatile occassion though for sure!

You have to ask yourself - what the f*ck were the FA thinking? Sheer insanity playing a night game at NP with the Swans and another club. Asking for it!

Luckily you weren’t born until at least 20 years later. You could have appreciated how much proper hate existed between the two clubs in those days.

Aye how I made at least 9 visits to the vetch before I was born I just dunno.....

Remember singing in reference to Cardiff being under water a few weeks before....
"Bath when your flooded...
You only bath when you're flooded
Bath when you're flooded

Terrace humour....(it could have been "wash" tbh...a long time ago...)

I remember as we were approaching Cardiff on the football special there was an announcement can all passengers plesse duck down under the tables,

Mad in them days,

We went up in 3 D Coaches double deckers from the valley

Most of our lot were on the Grange End open bank behind the goal when we could see fights breaking out with people fromantic one of the buses, so loads of us jumped over the back wall it was he'll of a drop down.
Anyway I landed on one of my mates accidently knocking him out.

Coach load of Swans fans stopped off in the pied piper on the way home & a cheer went up from the locals when the death of a Swans fan (David Williams) was announced on the news. You can imagine what happened next, it was so bad a couple of our fans were jailed.

Like many on here I was at the Ninian Park game. The memories are dim now. I remember being escorted to the ground from the railway station feeling a bit apprehensive about groups of CCFC fans congregating along the route, standing on an open bank with Palace fans at the other end belting out their 'Whose that team they call the Palace' song, a couple of low Palace shots fizzing narrowly wide of our goal and then Giles' goal. I came away feeling elated and relieved that we had nicked a result. It was only later I heard about the tragedy.

40 years ago tonight the trilogy of games came to end with us winning 2-1 at Ninian Park.

Future Swan Terry Boyle gave Palace the lead, but an equalizing goal from Robbie James and a brilliant solo goal from David Giles gave us a 2-1 win.

Anybody have any highlights of these games.
Cant find them anywhere went to 2 of the 3 including the Ninian Park game.

The FA Cup was something else back then.

Give the winners a Champions league place and scrap this 4th place in the PL crap.
Never happen I know.

RIP Dai Williams.

They have been doing that off and on and then making up their own version of events for years. There's a book in there somewhere 😂

OK I've changed it.

Yes the biggest difference now is it takes about 12 hours to get there and back.

Used to always go to the away game but to much hassle now.

Safer yes but the games are not what they once were.

They were like mutes at the Liberty in October were always loud in years gone by

What is also quite amazing is the size of the crowds.
We were a second division team (the old second division)
We had 17790 at home, 27006 at palace and 20012 at Cardiff.
We averaged 14315 at home that season.
Some of the away games we played that season
Newcastle away 14349
West ham away 21210
Sunderland away 25175
Cardiff away 14667 Cardiff home 21400
Chelsea away 18065
Wrexham away 10651

Cardiff can only get 5000 to watch their home fa cup games these days.
