| Wales' Brexit Vote 17:24 - Feb 2 with 6574 views | johnlangy | Here's some interesting info in an article published by professor Danny Dorling of Oxford University recently. ********************************************************************* “If you look at the more genuinely Welsh areas, especially the Welsh-speaking ones, they did not want to leave the EU,” Dorling told the Sunday Times. “Wales was made to look like a Brexit-supporting nation by its English settlers.” About 21% (650,000) of people living in Wales were born in England, with nearly a quarter aged over 65. The country voted for Brexit by a majority of just 82,000. Border towns and areas of central Wales with large English communities, such as Wrexham and Powys, recorded a higher proportion of leave votes, whereas Welsh-speaking areas such as Gwynedd and Ceredigion had high remain votes. ********************************************************************** So Welsh people did not after all vote for Brexit. | | | | |

| Wales' Brexit Vote on 15:27 - Feb 4 by johnlangy | Did I claim that ALL Welsh people voted remain ? Obviously a great number did vote for Brexit. The point i'm making is about the fact there are a huge number of English people live in Wales. And a very large proportion of those are retired (I mention that because it's agreed that older people voted more for Brexit than younger people) so had a big effect on the outcome in Wales. |
You just keep claiming Wales voted to remain when it voted to leave.

Most of those English retirees tend to converge around Pembrokeshire and west wales. I can’t imagine millions of wealthy English pensioners flock in their droves to places like Mountain Ash.

Just a quick cursory googling of Professor Danny Dorling shows he’s very anti brexit and a proper corbynite. So you have to wonder how objective these “studies” are?

Or Swansea for that point. Most of the people I know that voted brexit in Swansea do not fit the "wealthy English brigade". In fact, the English people that I know living in Swansea voted to remain in the EU.

| Wales' Brexit Vote on 18:26 - Feb 4 with 1554 views | Catullus | Isn't it just another pointless analysis by someone trying to back up his own viewpoint? Unless we know how absolutely every individual voted and they also included their age, gender and nationality this is just an opinion, not a fact. I wonder how many of the non English residents of England voted, same for Scotland. Well I don't wonder at all really. The argument is finished, the course is set, it's time to make the best of whatever comes next. | |

Quite right John, 21% of voters living in Wales were born in England. I wonder how they might have voted ?

I imagine there would be a bit of a reaction if millions were suddenly disenfranchised on the grounds of being a bit twp.

Exactly - and if Johnson gets his way and (1) removes the BBC's testicles, and (2) isolates (as his govt. has tried to do this week) liberal/critical journalists who work for "unsympathetic" newspapers, we'll be even more f*kt - with our futures controlled by an increasingly ignorant and uninformed electorate, and swayed by populist, right-wing sloganeering.

Continually insulting those with a different political opinion to you makes you the ignorant one mate. Extremely ignorant in fact.

So who are the ignorant? The far left, the left, middle of the road, right wing, far right, or just anyone with different views to you.
| |
| Wales' Brexit Vote on 14:28 - Feb 6 with 1210 views | Catullus | Wales has been solidly left wing for decades yet now anyone who voted leave is an ignorant right wing, tacist, xenophobe with no intelligence or education....not being as left wing as some seems to mean you are a Tory these days. I wonder what Kilk makes of the latest poll that shows support for independence has risen to 21% yet there is still more support for reversing devolution. More people believe in the Union and trust Westminster than believe in Indy or would trust the Senedd. Don't tell me, it's all the old people and in 20 years it'll all have changed!Just like Brexit I guess. | |
