https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/02/19/not-meat-eaters-need-morality-check-

So is it right for any company to discriminate against meat eaters? Should anyone affected take it to court like the vegan did? Would anyone here work for such a company?

Imagine trying to tell a vegan they could only claim expenses if they ate meat, imagine the outcry.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Paywall. Discriminate against meat eaters my arse. They’re probably doing us a favour, veggies are good for you. And contrary to some people’s reactions they won’t kill you or make your knob drop off (or whatever other macho bollox excuse the hard of thinking come up with). ‘Argh it’s a vegetable, help me!’.

Looks like a crap article, glad I’m not paying for it.

The company basically wont expense your meal if youre working away on business on their behalf if it contains meat. If it does, you pay for it yourself. Within reason.

Obviously its a nonsense. But thats the modern world which we now live in and where the tail often wags the dog. FWIW, most of the vegans i have come across and work with are very tolerant and believe people should be able to make their own decisions without being hassled or pestered or whatever. I think a lot of the noise is driven by the media. Unfortunately, as we have found out with many things in recent years, is that the more you tell somebody they are wrong or try to make them change their mind, the more they will push back and dig in causing a lot of polarised division.

The BBC also have an article (they are particularly bad for labelling anyone and everything) where people were "outraged" at having vegan type jokes made toward them and how they should all have their own shelf in the company fridge. Again, every single actual vegan i know in real life thought it was a bonkers idea.

There's a range of moral and ethical decisions to be worked through for example; there is a school of thought that organic farming produces more CO2 whilst the use of agro chemicals is reducing biodiversity and poisoning the environment at the same time there is a case made for the right balance of mixed farming to reduce both CO2 and the use of chemicals but this uses more land than intensive agro chemical supported arable farming.

I reckon you're right, as with everything in life, we need to find the right balance. You can try explaining to people why they should change, debate with them and point out the facts (whilst trying to root out the fake from the true) and maybe enough people will make the changes to keep us all happy.
When you go extreme though, when you try and force your views on people or ridicule and abuse them you just cause more polarisation.
We've cut down on meat intake, increased veg intake but dieticians tell you you need some meat for a healthy diet (well the NHS dieticians my wife works with say that anyway) but it's important to allow peope their personal choices, as long as they are legal choices anyway.

The balance relies on how many mouths you have to feed. As long as population keeps growing the further away from sustaining that population expansion we get.

One thing they do need to ban is these militant vegans projecting their beliefs onto their young children who then grow up to have massive skeletal problems because they’ve been deprived vital nutrients at a crucial point of development.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

There you go then.

Every nutrient needed can be obtained on a vegan diet. The NHS recommends supplements for all children at the moment - whatever their diet. Vitamin D for an example.

Some parents of course aren’t careful about their kids’ diet. They can be seen at every fast food place up and down the country.

Quite right. Of course they can.

Kids on well informed vegan diets will do far better than those on lower quality diets including meat. All this issue highlights is a lack of knowledge.

The trouble is, people find it hard to change habits - going vegan healthily takes effort to find substitutes to common meals and ensure the diet is balanced. Perfectly doable, but requires learning new skills to understand foods (not sure on the financials though - in theory shouldn’t be too expensive, eg bulk buy beans and seeds for straightforward ingredients or sprouting).

Yup, 20 percent of 10 year olds in UK are obese.

Easier and cheaper to add a bit of egg to a vegetarian diet for a child to according to my neice who is a vegan with a small child.

Yep.

There will be vegans with unhealthy diets but it’s perfectly possible to get every nutrient from plant based foods.

There are vast swathes of the world that have a vegan diet.

And given the price of good quality meat veganism is cheap.

Many vegans do add eggs and also milk to their kids’ diets as it’s easier. Honey as well.

But it’s not necessary if people don’t want to do that as long as they make sure nutrients are sourced elsewhere.

This is the thing. ANY diet can be unhealthy. Done right veganism can be perfectly healthy, and there’s a growing body of evidence that it’s far healthier that the standard western diet. But it also involves what you drink too, with alcohol being as bad, if not worse, that bad food.

Just avoid the vegan ‘fish and chips’ I stupidly tried - I know, asking for trouble - in some fancy place in Bristol last night. It’s genuinely making me feel sick just thinking about it now.

Or maybe it was the fact that some elegant wurzel had taken a dump in trench and street car park between the lifts and our car.

As an aside, saw The Book of Mormon by the South Park mob. At their best for some strong social comment about religion and its attendant nutters, self interest, American stupidity, and issues faced by poor non whites. Never surely what they really believe in, but I laughed a lot. Recommend.

Book of Mormon is amazing. They’ve been taking the piss out of Mormons and what they believe in for about thirty years but in interviews they are always very complimentary of them for being so nice.

They did a film called Orgazmo! about a Mormon who got blackmailed into joining the porn industry years ago, not many people know about it but it’s hilarious from start to finish if you’re a childish bastard like me.

Wtf. That’s the trouble with all of this. Vegan meals can be delicious, until some wassock decides they need to be accessible (see your ‘fish’ and chips, vegan ‘bacon’, any Quorn products, etc.). As it becomes more popular the processed crap and straight swaps will only increase. It’s a recipe (pun intended ) for disaster.

Right, time for footie.

Actually the point I was making was less about meat and more about the trend for people trying to force their opinion/point of view or beliefs onto other people.

We went out last night and I had a vegan spicy bean burger, it was very tasty. I have nothing against vegans or veganism other than the minority trying to dictate to the majority.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Been eating low carb, high protein for a while now, diet of good meat, eggs, fish, cheese and low carb veg. Also, any dairy is full fat including butter, milk, yogurt and cream, cut back on the alcohol, especially beer and have the occasional red wine, no sugar or fruits and other products high in fructose.
Over the past 3 months, or so,lost almost a stone in weight and feel the best I have for some considerable time.
