Mosley, Foot and the likes of me... 09:32 - Apr 7 with 3686 viewsLohengrin

So despite all the incessant media babble about Mosley’s ‘extremism,’ and Foot’s ‘suicide note’ it turns out they were right all along, as were the constant Jeremiads delivered on-line by the likes of me. Is there anybody reading this today, even those who were formerly the most rabid believers in globalism, who don’t now recognise the central importance of maintaining and developing domestic productive capacity?

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

It seems to be cyclical. Most individual nations maintain a production base to a certain level, but the centre of Global production seems to shift now and again.

Europe during the Industrial Revolution (and the UK in particular) was the workshop of the world for quite some time, manufacturing almost everything for export everywhere else. In time the US took over that mantle, perfecting production line technology and possessing a huge internal market as well as an international one.

Over the last 30/40 years, especially since the economic reforms of the late 80's that essentially ditched communism (but kept the authoritarian parts) China has become the World's manufacturing hotspot whilst it's withered elsewhere. In time it will be replaced by somewhere else. India perhaps, or Africa. Wherever goods can be produced cheaply for export and sale elsewhere.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Or replaced by advances in technology which will lessen the advantage gained through low labour costs.

AI and 3d printing will put millions out of low paid repetitive jobs as the technology matures and improves. It will destroy much of the competitive advantage of low pay rates. Where those people will go however, and what they will do will be, in the (not) chinese words of (not) confucius, 'interesting'...

Also a strong possibility.

I reckon we either have to end up with universal incomes or get rid of money completely. Just a thought, but how would a universal income work re exchange rates? Wouldn't we have to move over to a single worldwide currency? Wouldn't the whole world have to buy into it for it to work?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

This maybe a simplistic view but I spent many years working opposite Addis.

They made plastic brushes and mops & buckets.Must have employed several hundred people all reasonably paid jobs, they also bought locally and if you owned a brush it was almost always made by Addis.

Now the site is full of Jerry built apartments that we buy and rent to each other but no money or products are generated anymore and your brushes are made in China.

Like I said a bit simplistic but illustrates what has changed locally in the last 20 years.

Plastic since 1974

If I think you're saying, in plain English, that we should have a bigger manufacturing base in this country and look after it then yes I agree. I've been saying it for at least 30 years, it's not exactly rocket science, but sadly governments, mostly Tory, have been happy to see manufacturing decline. It is a lot easier to make people redundant in this country than others and so multi-national companies usually close down sites here and move them to Europe, India and beyond. That's your tories for you in a nutshell, it began with Thatcher.

Trouble is most of the public are not interested in buying British goods. They are quite happy buying cheap goods from china India etc.
