No ii certainly don’t. I may support the principle that racism is a truly dreadful thing. I don’t support BLM as a specific organisation and certainly not violence and destruction. How much of that is truly related to BLM is also debatable. I feel rather more shame that nearly 40 years ago as a boy I chanted, as many of us did, racist abuse on the North Bank. I’ve learned. Been lucky enough to work in Africa and Southern US. I work in a slaver city that has looked at its past to develop a better and more equitable future. I am a pragmatist. I know there is no utopia.

I’m not trying to point score there. If you grew up at a time when you were around people who held racist views and despite that background you have developed as a person and left racism behind, that’s great. I only have praise for you.
...it would be terrible to be judged by people of today by mistakes we made in the past wouldn’t it. We’d never progress, we’d be stuck fighting over the wrongs of the past forever more.
But I am sorry, BLM does support defunding the police and they have been explicit about that...it was a mistake for people to support that movement blindly.
We didn’t need BLM to teach us not to be racist in the UK. On this very board we have had black Swans fans saying as much.
My post angered you but all of the posts supporting a movement that has;
- broken the lockdown
- tore down statues
- graffitied war memorials that commemorate the blood spilt by my forefathers
- attacked our police and members of the public
- and called for the defunding of police, abolishment of prisons etc.
- whilst maintaining my country was full of racists (I know it isn’t)
...angered me
Do you honestly not see the irony that within hours of a protest against our police they are having to deal with that, whilst bystanders film them?

How? This is the point. You are adding two and two to get five. You don’t know and neither do I who filmed this. Reading is a relatively small but heavily populated town. It could be anyone from a random teenager to a pensioner for all we know (though the latter is less likely). As for the rest-
Well they seem to have happened at other protests too and I think we both know the groups involved. I wish is could share your optimism that we are not a racist country. No more so than Germany and perhaps even less than France, but racism is there every day. They are not protest against the police specifically, but there to make us all think of our actions. If it was somebody there for BLM that would be absurd, but the point still stands regardless of who filmed it.
The irony being that the police are trying to save people’s lives on the spot where there was just a protest held by a movement that wants to defund the police.

You know full well defunding is not that simple a question and is also highly unlikely even from a liberal government. Improvements in areas like social services may act to reduce crime.
