Yep - Knee surgery for ligament damage August 2018, on crutches for 6 months then broke bones in foot and tore a ligament in April 2019. 2 serious long term injuries.
Played in 22 League games last season but unsurprisingly only 5 the season before.

What makes him more a "proper" defensive midfielder than Grimes? Is it just that he doesn't score or create? Even before his injuries he was put in half the tackles, blocks, clearances etc. that Grimes does.

For what it’s worth I think Grimes is very good for this level but he’s been playing within himself this season, don’t know if it’s the captaincy weighing him down or the system etc. I’d like to see him further forward. |  |

For what it’s worth I do rate Grimes as a player - no doubt about that. He is more suited to a role further forward though and just isn’t a natural CDM. That’s not his fault, it’s just that he’s a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.
I’d much rather release Byers and keep Grimes.
If there’s a negative I could apply to Grimes in that position it would be he’s not vocal enough and lacks physical presence. [Post edited 16 Aug 2020 10:38]

Depends which PL team it is. If he goes somewhere like Leeds he’ll probably be competing for a place with someone like Patrick Bamford. There’s only one winner there. | |

To me it suggests that we see bringing on youngsters with Premier Clubs as a way of improving the quality of the squad in the short term without significant outlay of money.
Same glass different way of looking at it.

As the squad begins to take shape it strikes me that we should release or sell the following 4/5 players;
- Declan John
- Nathan Dyer
- Barrie McKay
- Joel Asoro
- I'd also consider selling Peterson as I don't believe he is good enough (would love to be proved wrong though) and should be replaced by Jamal Lowe.
...and bring in the following;
- 2 x Centre-backs, 1 permanent and experienced, plus 1 youngster on loan (Guehi if possible)
- 1 x Left-back (ideally somebody on a free that can give Bidwell a run for his money)
- 1 x Winger/Utility Forward - Jamal Lowe
- 1 x Striker (An exciting young talent on loan)
I know, wishful thinking, but if we could do something like this I believe we will have a good chance next season. | |
