When will the people we pay to govern grow a set of bollocks?
Nobody was 'cheated'. Teachers predicted grades that the pupils wouldn't have achieved, same as every year.
75% of pupils didn't achieve what was predicted last time out.
Only 40% of pupils weren't given what they were predicted this year.
Results across the board are up...

...and yet still we have this pathetic pretense that pupils have been cheated somehow.
...and of course it is the usual suspects spreading these lies; The Labour Party etc.
...when will the people we pay to govern grow a set of balls and face these idiots down?

Discuss.

The u-turn system is rubbish, I agree. I just suggested a system that could have been into account to address the outliers. It works both ways too, there are examples of the original algorithm awarding a 6 when the maximum that could have been gained from that level exam Paper was a 4!

I’m not sure what your getting at with individual examples of colleges. Are you saying they did well after the u-turn so the grades are undeserved or are you just saying they did well and deserve praise?

This idea that teachers are just sticking their finger in the air and scribbling down random high grades is just plain wrong. Teachers generally follow an algorithm (funnily enough...) where the targets they set are in line with the top 25% performing children in previous years.

I’m repeating myself again but anything lower than that is seen as not ambitious enough. The level of accountability (in England, can’t comment on Wales) for teachers is nuts, and in many ways has contributed to where we are.

Gower College is the main 6th form provider for all of Swansea. When the original results came out they put out that they were record results. The same applied to Coleg Sir Gar the main 6th form provider for Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot College Group and Coleg Gwent. Coleg Gwent covers 3 of the 10 most disadvantaged areas in Wales and Gower College 5 of the 31 most disadvantaged area. That is a quarter of the most disadvantaged area and it will be higher as there will be further areas of Gwent included.

Giving everyone grades their teacher assessed simply isnt fair to students who have been in establishments where teachers have marked accurately and isnt fair to past or future students who were only allowed half the pass rate when they sat. 1/2 the students having the highest A* rate would have had it in previous years. How do those students who actually sat exams feel.

To be fair to everybody the grades should have been capped at the same level and moderation should have been used as in other years.

To remove it has put these students at an advantage over every other year.

Teachers have to accept the blame. It is they who decided that nearly twice as many students than last year were given their grades. It is scandulous and needs looking into and action taken against these teachers.

Spot on until the last paragraph.

When teachers set the predictions no-one had any idea what the assessment procedures would be.

Teacher set ambitious targets (which they have to - there is no choice here) Most often in line with the top 25% of schools (meaning 75% won’t make it), using nationally supplied data which is most often provided by the FFT.

This information was known, incorrectly factored into the algorithm then unturned upon. The predictions were never meant to be the actual grades and therefor as in previous years, no impact on grade inflation.

Next year will be interesting when grades will be considerably lower than they are this year.

If you were in another job and got 75% of your work wrong do you honestly think you will still be there.

Teachers are fully aware they are giving students higher than they will achieve. Some are actually honest and much stricter. It is the constant over prediction that is leading to the government looking to get rid of the predicted grades system and changing the university year and have students applying with actual grades.

Basically teachers have proven they cannot be trusted although there are some this doesnt apply to.

Making those predictions are less than (but I’ll let you have) 1% of a teachers work, so getting 0.75% of your work wrong is pretty good really.

Some astonishing results in the school that my daughter teaches in up in Yorkshire.

The algorithm has given numerous children grades that are three places higher than the teacher estimates and they were literally impossible to achieve if the exam had it been taken. One child who was expected to get a grade 1 has been given a grade 8. It seems that algorithm grade inflation is way higher than any teacher grade inflation.

Hang fire Joe, this is still teachers fault.

If results are inflated that’s teachers fault, if their suppressed that’s teachers fault. If teachers follow nationally agreed target setting, that’s teachers fault. If teachers deviate from nationally agreed target setting, that’s teachers fault. If teachers set best case scenario then ,that’s teachers fault. If teachers set predictions incorrectly against exams that didn’t happen then that’s their fault. If the dfe model that should have standardised predictions, then that’s their fault. If the government u from what they’d said they’d do that’s their fault. If the Secretary of State says on Friday says he won’t u turn but does by the following Wednesday he does that teachers fault. If the dfe pull BTEC results at 5pm the day before release that’s teachers fault.

Come on!? According to exhrmc teaches are 75% wrong in what they do.

I would expect teachers just like every other profession to be honest. Giving kids who are nowhere near A grades AAA is scandulous and dis honest. There is absolutely no way that predicted grades shouldnt be this far wrong. Yes there will be a small percentage but certainly not 75% and why is 75% over predicted and only 9% over predicted. Universities are now ignoring predicted grades because they cant be trusted. The government is planning changing the system because it is so unreliable.

Those are facts. The 25% who get it right deserve credit. The 75% who over predict are a disservice to their profession. I could understand 10% but 75% is totally unacceptable.

Yep, the pressure on teachers (in England) is so intense that predicted grades tend to be higher than is actually achievable in a high % of cases.

Again, those teachers setting those grades had no idea that they would be the grades actually set, so how is that their fault?

Every other profession to be honest. 🙄. Is that really what you’re saying? Every other profession is honest apart from teaching?
