BBC want to stop the Proms playing "Rule Britannia" and "Land of Hope and Glory"
"The debate is understood to have been initiated by the Black Lives Matter movement, with bosses reconsidering the songs' inclusion because of their perceived association with colonialism and slavery."

Including why the Red Flag is sung clearly!
Yep.
The colour of the banner alludes to the blood ties that unite the brotherhood of international socialists while the lyrics honour those who have fallen in the fight for social justice.
“The Red Flag” is a passionate ode to defiance in the face of “the rich man’s frown” and an expression of faith in the power of collective action and “the hope of peace at last”.
Including Merthyr.

Does it also honour those countless hundreds of millions who have been murdered in its name?
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

It predates the Soviet Union/Russian Revolution and Communist China. Been sung by the Labour Party since its foundation in 1900. Nothing to do with communism or Marxism.
Famously written by Shakin’ Stevens in the box room at his Mother’s house in 1976. Red being the colour of the Sunsets he could see through the nets. Any other answer is just made up malarkey...
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Isn't Shakin Stevens just made up malarkey though?
I don't particularly care about the red flag, show me a Labour government in our lifetime that has done any good? Someone on here once posted that was a fag paper between Labour and Tory, whichever side you come at it from, all they have done is screw us over.

Was aware of this, but never heard it. Wish I had not now. Anyway good ole shaky is definitely a ‘Blue’ apart from when they played in red of course. Even said so in Viz.

Just taken over by Russia with their red flag which is often seen at labour party conferences.

Russian flag is a red, white and blue tricolour. Used to have an eagle. The flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was red with a hammer and sickle. Been to many conferences then brother?
It may be of interest, as KKJ as eluded to, the flag was first flown anywhere by the working man in Wales in 1831. Remember the struggles of chartists and early socialists is the reason you are not living in a slum with no voting rights, no health provision and is the reason have employment rights.
The adoption of the red flag by communists was later (and not in the UK). The people's flag.

Yes one good thing that happend was the demise of the union of soviet socialist republic USSR. Though it was hardly a republic just a dictatorship . The new Russia started of with good intentions but since Putin became the new dictator it has reverted to type and they happy to murder their own citizens as recent cases have shown

I didn’t see the USSR as a threat as much back then as the divided countries are now. It’s all over the place. Having served in peacekeeping areas when it really went bonkers on those countries borders it has gradually got worse and worse. Mind you if the people of the USSR and other eastern bloc countries were oppressed back then how come they continue to complain about being continually oppressed now ?

It’s maybe a question worth considering.
I think you will find the people of Latvia Lithuania Estonia Poland Hungary Czech Slovakia bulgaria Romania are very happy to free from the USSR. A few countries like Ukraine Belarus not so happy mainly because Russia is still effectively in charge or has invaded parts of their countries.

Very much so. The Baltic Countries in particular feat annexation by Putin. Ukraine divided and invaded when President no longer pro-Putin. Ever wondered why Putin is trying to destabilise Europe?

Let’s not forget the Peterloo Massacre in Aug 1819, that led to the establishment of the Guardian newspaper (after its more radical predecessor was closed down).
But still only seeking Male sufferage. The oppressed still being oppressors, as ever it has been ;)
Of course the red flag goes back many centuries as the opposite of the white flag.

Indeed. Much longer again for universal suffrage. White, green and purple then.
Interesting that one of the more radical (female) speakers at the Republican convention was suggesting a return to household voting. That the wife’s vote is subject to approval of the husband. Certainly straying into Margaret Atwood territory there.

What was the old saying, my husband makes all the important decisions, like who to vote for, i make all the rest ;)

Ah the BBC. OP, I genuinely hope you cancel your TV licence. Before the Twitter addict Lineker took a pay cut, his salary of £1,750,000 was equal to over 11,000 yearly licence fees. Yikes.
The BBC do not cater for normal people anymore, and are a vehicle for the far-left loonies hell-bent on exhuming our history for their perverse, self-flagellating ends. The UK's history ain't always pretty, but whose history is completely unblemished? My God. And when do these historical reparations end? It's impossible to sustain and separate one iniquitous historical event from another. Should we be furious at the Romans? The Vikings? When does it end?
Is it simply a coincidence that the one time The Proms can't have a live crowd, that the BBC decide to first remove, U-turn, then alter Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory? Without a crowd, their decision will be met with silence. And they know it. Spineless, underhanded nonsense.

The British museum is just as bad. They have just removed a bust of Hans Sloane their founder and a philanthropist who donated his collection which formed the basis of the British Museum's collection. Will they return his collection to his family? The gutless morons who run the British Museum deserve to be sacked.
