After a man ran at police with a knife and they shot him.
Walmart’s fault apparently. The local populous has descended on this and other stores to protest.

OK I've changed it.

Would that man be dead if he'd been waving a knife around in the UK?

I doubt it.

US cops are trigger-happy sh*te-houses.

They need to take lessons from our boys, and should be made to watch this.

You're missing the point.

Police use guns in the UK under strict conditions and as a last resort, or in clearly justifiable situations, for example during the London Bridge/Borough market terrorist attack.

God knows how many people are killed or maimed by US police every week - police who are too useless or lazy to think of other ways to deal with violent civilians.

I don't think so , I'm not defending any side but how about the "victim" taking responsibility for their actions . I'm only assuming this but the guy and the others killed by police have grown up in an environment where cops are ( and citizens ) legally armed . Then surely if the tales of excessive killing of coloured people is as the media and common knowledge say it is then if it was me I'd be more than wary of waving and then trying to confront a cop.
The more that carry guns the higher the risk for everyone I suppose.

And therein lies the problem, Boundy.

We might be cool and rational British blokes. I myself wouldn't wave a finger at a US cop, let alone a knife, especially if I was black.

But many of the victims of police shootings in the US are anything but rational. Many of them are mentally ill. The dead bloke in Philly, allegedly, was one such, with his family claiming he was bipolar, and that the police should have used a taser to subdue him.

A long-time friend of mine suffers badly from the same condition, and when he's been in manic episodes in the past he's become involved in violent confrontations with British police, and has had a few beatings from them - once being handcuffed to a red hot radiator in a hospital ward and having his face pushed against the hot metal every time he struggled. But at least they didn't shoot him.

US police have a poor record when dealing with deranged folk, as evidenced by this link:

I can agree with you mostly but did the police know he was mentally ill? Did they think he was off his face on amphetamines or whatever?

Not knowing the full facts makes it hard to call in any of these shootings I guess. What we get over here is the media driven witch hunts and all sorts of accusations.

I've been to Florida 5 times and only spoken to a police officer twice, both times to ask directions and they were really nice, calm, polite and helpful but the tourist areas of Florida are a universe away from an American inner city (dare I say) ghetto.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

DYSS described him as "a man high on a lethal cocktail of drugs with a truly disgusting criminal record (including threatening a pregnant lady with a knife to her stomach during a burglary)"

What else do you know?

And, in the end, what does it matter?

I doubt the police knew who he was before they shot him.

If he was a paragon of virtue he'd still have been shot.

DYSS's description sounds like George Floyd.
This guy is Walter Wallace Jr, a criminal who previously held a gun to a woman’s head and was awaiting trial for threatening to shoot another.
Just your average nice guy that the police were familiar with.

Sounds like an unpleasant bloke.

But are you suggesting that the police knew him and that maybe they just got a bit casual about firing 10 bullets at him because he kind of deserved it?

And that if they'd known him to be a blameless, local charity worker who had just happened to flip his lid they'd have put their guns back in their holsters, and dealt with him in some other way?

We are unusual in Europe in not generally arming our police

The difference in the US is the number of potential criminals carrying guns, who are willing to use them against the police. Of course our police face risks, but far less against guns than police in the US.

DYSS I think was indeed referring to the original catalyst, not this case

I am not suggesting anything, I am providing you and everybody else with information.

Philadelphia Riots on 21:45 - Oct 28 with 825 viewsFieryJack

There's some information here for you AfD, but you should be able to dismiss it easily enough since it comes from a Liberal/Left source.

"Wallace was described by relatives as suffering from a mental breakdown, but a call for help, where they requested an ambulance, not police, ended in a deadly confrontation with law enforcement after reports that the man had a knife.

Relatives said on Wednesday that he had bipolar disorder and was in the midst of a crisis when he was killed by police, reported CNN.

His father, Walter Wallace Sr, said the incident “could have been dealt with in a different way”.

The officers, he said, “could have called a superior to handle the situation”.

Condemning the breakdown of protests later into episodes of lawlessness Wallace Sr called on people to instead pray for his family.

“All this violence and looting. I don’t want to leave a bad scar on my son and my family with this looting and chaos stuff,” Wallace Sr told CNN.

“Stop this. Give my son a chance. And the family, we’re decent people.”

He added: “It’s an SOS to help, not to hurt.”

He also called for justice in a case still being investigated and warned that any violence would make things worse, not better, and wouldn’t bring his son back.

Reggie Shuford, executive director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania, said Philadelphia was “overdue for a reckoning with the brazenly violent and abusive behavior in its police department” and that it has a “long history of brutality against city residents, particularly against Black Philadelphians”.

“In the days ahead, we expect full transparency from Commissioner Outlaw, the Kenney administration, and District Attorney Krasner’s office about this tragedy. While witnesses have stated that Mr Wallace was armed with a knife, video from the incident suggests that no one was in immediate danger when officers killed him,” he said in a statement.

“State violence cannot be the answer to societal problems that deserve a fairer, more thoughtful, and more compassionate approach.”

Well, for someone who has never been in the position of those police you are very quick to condemn them.
What do you think would be the outcome if that same person had run at the armed French Police with a large knife?
Or how about the armed Israeli police?
Or the armed Italian police?
Or come to that an armed UK swat squad?
You know the same sort of squad that shot the London knifer in the head when he was being held on the ground?

In countries with armed police it is known as "suicide by police".

It is only when you face death that you appreciate life for what it is.
It is so easy to criticise the Police from the safety and comfort of your favourite armchair thouands of miles away.

Ive found, when visiting, to be professional and very polite although much firmer than here..You do not insult them as you do here, certainly not in NYC.

I have a nephew who is now American citizen who has been stopped several times by Police and done for speeding a few times too. Every time, they were utterly professional but there again my nephew did as he was told and the first thing is to keep hand where they can see them. Everybody in USA knows this.
