| Lots of fuss about pubs shutting on 12:25 - Dec 5 by Highjack | How is this data compiled? If you catch coronavirus there’s no way of being able to know where and off whom you caught it. You could have a day where you go to work in the morning spending all day with several other people, then go to a busy supermarket in the afternoon and a quick pint in the pub before going home to bed. If you then test positive a few days later it’s not necessarily being in the pub what done it. But the data would correlate being in a pub to testing positive when there were probably a hundred other opportunities to catch the virus. It’s simply not reliable. Think even when you’re social distancing how many people you come into contact with. There’s no way of knowing where or when you caught it. It’s nothing but guesswork. |
Test and trace. They have a very good idea of your movements. Then again how is any data compiled, you either want to believe it or not

True, it's partly how Thatcher got in and stayed, greed, cheap council houses, cheap shares, small tax cuts for working man and big ones for rich.

Some people do catch it in hospital but it's a small number and mostly staff. Maybe, instead of shutting hospitality they should have said no one can have more than 3 alcoholic drinks and made pubs put a system in place, taking names or table numbers and keeping a track so nobody got too drunk and stopped caring about rules. I know that's a real phaff but would it be better than the all or nothing we have now? Surely it's not beyond the wit of business and government to find a better way? As it stands now the figures show the Senedd isn't stopping the spread of the virus but is going to cost thousands of jobs and do great damage to the Welsh economy, they'll probably just blame Westminster though. Hey Kilkenny, can you still say Drakers is putting lives first?

The fact is people dont catch it from fleeting contact. You catch it from being next to someone for a considerable time. Look at care homes where people are close to each other, hospitals where it spreads, students with Halls of Residences and Houses of Multiple Occupancy. They are all in close proximity for long periods. The further away from someone you are the less likely you will be to catch it. Look at all the cases recently in Morriston Hospital or the cases at Cwm Cartref. It only needs 1 person to have it then it spreads like wildfires. This is why visiting isnt allowed because one person can infect so many. People are in pubs for long periods sitting near others. In supermarkets you are moving around. You are never next to people for long which is why it doesnt spread. In a pub environment you sit near others often for hours so it spreads. Ask yourself how many go into supermarkets every hour and how few cases there are for literally millions of people. In supermarkets most wear masks. People dont do that in pubs and restaurants and are close to others. This is probably why cases are spreading in schools. Students are close to each other in classrooms for long periods and dont wear masks. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Only 14% of cases have been put down to pubs. Most cases are spread at home but we're being allowed a 3 family bubble. Which will cost more lives? Like I pointed out earlier, hospitality and shops combined are blamed for 28% of cases. Do you understand that? 72% of cases are from elsewhere. Has the Senedd published the stat for how many cases are caught at home? Keep an eye on the stats for the 2/3 weeks after Christmas.

Of course you can catch it from fleeting contact. It’ll just take a few droplets from someone going in your eyes or mouth. Could literally just take one breath. Obviously the longer you spend with an infected person the bigger the chance of you catching it.

I have seen the pictures but is it the pubs fault what people do in the street? Maybe we should ask why the rules aren't enforced as well? If pubs could only serve limited amounts the drunken stupidity wouldn't happen so much. Is it better to ruin peoples lives financially? That brings long term health problems too. There has to be a better way.

Cases have risen since we started wearing masks. Does this mean wearing masks is spreading covid? Of course not. Again correlation is not implying causality. Edit: wrong person quoted [Post edited 5 Dec 2020 14:06]

The official stats say 14 of new cases are from hospitality, 13% from shops. You only have to walk through a space where someone infectious has been coughing and you could catch it, quite literally in one breath, one inhalation. I try and only make one visit per week to the supermarket because I see too many not wearing masks, not wiping the trolley handles and not using the hand gel and then far too many cannot wait a few seconds and squeeze in close to you to get something off a shelf. It's not just alcohol that causes stupidity, impatience does too. Myself and my wife have become a bit OCD about wiping handles and using hand gel, so far so good.

How many people do to shops and how many go to pubs. The percentage getting it through shops is minute compared to pubs. I assume you go to Tesco in Neath Abbey. There are thousands upon thousands going there everyday. Same with me in Pontardawe. The numbers going through Tesco, Lidl, Farm Foods and Home Bargains way outstrips the numbers going to all the pubs in the areas. Like you I only go once a week but go the local shop once or twice a week. Your experience as regards masks is totally different to mine. It is only the occasional person not wearing masks. This applies to Tesco and Farm Foods as well as Wilko in Swansea. Wilko actually have security stopping people go in if the store is too full and ensure people are wearing masks. The biggest problem I have seen is people getting on buses with masks then taking them off. Last week in Tesco I didnt see a single person without a mask on.

I think people overestimate the effectiveness of masks too. It’s as if it’s some magic barrier that makes everybody safe. It’s not, it’s a porous bit of cloth and any microscopic bacteria or viruses in your breath will still sail through easily. They may help in blocking any droplets or mucus expelled by sneezing or coughing but the fact remains (science!) that the only way to avoid catching it apart from donning a full hazmat suit is to avoid other people, which is impractical or not possible.

It doesn’t take extended contact at all, if it is the case, why wear masks in supermarkets if you can’t catch it in the few seconds it takes to pass someone else? Your arguement makes no sense. [Post edited 5 Dec 2020 14:50]

I agree with you, it can be caught very easily and doesn’t require extended contact, but the more contact there is the greater the chance of the infection being passed.
