| Another Brexit benefit .... on 17:45 - Dec 19 by BarrySwan | We....... didn't sell lots of our fishing rights to anyone. Incompetent fools in successive Labour and Conservative and Lib Dem governments allowed certain individuals to sell their fishing quotas to foreign owned vessels and companies rather than being obliged to return said licenses if they didn't intend to fish themselves. In fact I see absolutely no reason why myself nor any member of this forum shouldn't apply for licences to sell on even if we have never been to sea and own no boats in competition to those people with trawlers not putting to sea and sellng their licences to the highest bidder? Surely if none of us, sea folk or message board punter, has an intention of using a fishing quota which appears to be allowed at the moment then we should all be allowed to apply and gain a licence to sell on for profit ( a la Graysons ferry company with no ships style) under the current ludicrous practice? Alternatively back in the real world that most of us live in a competent government managing sustainable fish stocks would issue licences to those who wish to use them to fish and not allow the selling on by a select few supposed fishing families, individuals or larger companies Use your licence or lose it. Most of the Wales share of the fishing rights have be flogged with a huge proportion being owned by 1 super trawler. | | | |

Exactly my point. Successive British governments have allowed a few individuals to flog off licences for profit instead of using them to fish themselves. I have no doubt that most people would expect any licences not used to fish to be compulsory returned for reallocation when and as becomes necessary rather than allow an individual who has no intentioning of fishing themselves being allowed to flog it off.

Correct. however, Scotland is the UK’s largest fishing nation, with two-thirds of all quota. When Scotland leaves the UK, well all that quota goes as well. England wont even get the keep its fish ... 😂

That's wrong. If Scotland goes indy it loses access to English waters. Any fish caught in Scottish waters are Scottish fish, not English. So England can keep it's fish, Scotland can keep hers. The Eu doesn't get Scottish fish unless Scotland is allowed to rejoin. Happy to put you right, again.

Scotland cant leave without parliament giving permission to have another once in generation referendum. Nicola should concentrate on sorting Scotland major problems first. The Scottish health service is failing badly with people in Glasgow having a shorter life expectancy than some third world countries. She also needs to tackle the 300% increase in drug related deaths in the last 10 years. Add to that Scotland alcohol and obesity problem you can see she should concentrate on her day job.

We have bern bringing in a life saving vaccine from Belgium. Not great if the traffic does not flow. Some would say its a self inflicted economic disaster.. Like a man who cant read burning down a library. Just the start. And zero benefits.

Yes it can - and it will. The Scots decide on Scotlands future, nobody else. Scotland is not in jail. All the bad things you have listed have been created by Westminster rule. All of them. Independence will give the Scots the powers to address. Check the Indy1 docs, nothing says it was once a generation. BBC speak bollox. Indy2 will be a landslide.

That's nothing to do with brexit though, it's because of the pandemic. Beides which they have said that only traffic that's manually handled is affected. Otherwise 80% of goods are still flowing freely. Medicine is in with that 80%. People can try and stir it up but the shops have said they have plenty of supplies. The biggest concern is amongst the drivers who may not make it home for Christmas. One driver this morning said they were very used to delays, it's not a new thing.

Seems to be affecting the ROI BADLY. The vaccine comes in via refrigerated containers not by roll on roll off ferries I do wish you would do some basic research before telling your lies. [Post edited 22 Dec 2020 10:08]

Even the SNP agreed it was a once in a lifetime referendum. Scotland can't leave with approval of the UK government you only have to look at what happened in Spain when Catalonia tried. Scotland can't survive without the UK subsidies. All the things I listed are under the control of the Scottish government due the the powers devolved to them by the UK. What do you think of that very fine politician Sir Keir’s recent comments that “no responsible Prime Minister would grant an independence referendum”?

80% are not flowing freely though. 20% of the freight is via Dover, but another 26% of freight is via the tunnel which has also been closed. Almost half of our inward goods are affected. What was that about doing research that Felixstowe mentioned? Your research seems to consist of believing that idiot Johnson who stood there and lied. [Post edited 22 Dec 2020 15:05]

The vaccine is coming in via truck from Belgium. There were actually TV pictures of the first truck leaving the factory a couple of weeks ago. That’s why the government have set up military transport to bring the vaccine here if the current border issues continue. You lot will believe any old crap that comes from Johnson’s mouth. 174 lorries he said, when there were over 500 actually sitting in the queue at the exact time he made the statement. 900 odd by the end of the evening when they had to shut the M20. Early this morning there were over 1500 per Patel. They are lying.

Paraphrasing my new pal Paul Embery , who seems to be my symbiotic political twin: ‘And just like that the principle of a nation state supporting its own industrial and manufacturing base with localised supply chains within the framework of a truly National economy is suddenly relevant again...’

No amount of national framework will allow the UK to grow citrus fruit at this time of year Loh. And, as I keep telling you, the day the UK’s shoppers decide that they want to go back to a limited seasonal choice of food rather than year round supply and are prepared to pay more than double what they pay now for far less, we can talk.

If they can grow bananas in Iceland I’m sure oranges and lemons aren’t beyond the wit of planners here, Lis.

We import a lot of citrus from non EU states though. We got 90,000 ton of oranges from Spain in 2019, it's quite possible South Africa supplies us more in the future. It's not like 100% of our imprts come from or via the EU, changes will have to happen.
