Iceland has been forced to apologise after one of its bosses reportedly labelled the Welsh language “gibberish”.
The supermarket, which is headquartered in Deeside in Wales, insisted that a series of statements made by the director of corporate affairs did not “reflect” the company’s views.
It is thought that the statement by Keith Hann was made in a personal blog which has now been privatised. In the same blog, it is alleged he also said that the Welsh language sounded “like someone with bad catarrh clearing his throat”.

He's not wrong there. It is a very guttural, coarse and harsh sounding language. Those double L's and CH's aren't easy on the old throat.
He has also made other comments both now and previously. The problem is if he said this about another language it would be classed as racist and everyone and every language should be treated the same. Iceland really had no choice especially given his previous comments. I wonder whether he is OHG in disguise. They follow his views and from the same general area.

Welsh is the most beautiful language. Its story of resistance and perseverance speaks to the human spirit. It has all the verve you would expect from the Celts. The anthem is for the World Heritage people. Different gravy.
English on the other hand has Germanic origins.... As Nye once said ‘the phlegmatic and bovine’ Anglo Saxons. He had a way with words old Nye. I will leave you with the dirge of GSTQ. Dreadful stuff.

Welsh is a beautiful language, I have been told that many times by English people. The same people say the Welsh accent makes it sound like we're singing when we're just talking.
It is Brythonic Kilk, like Breton and Cornish, that makes it ancient British.

Irish, Scottish and Manx form the Goidelic languages, while Welsh, Cornish and Breton are Brittonic. All of these are Insular Celtic languages, since Breton, the only living Celtic language spoken in continental Europe, is descended from the language of settlers from Britain.
Glad we agree its a beautiful language whatever.

It is beautiful whatever else I say. We have a magnificent national anthem very few others are in the same league though I do like the French anthem, stirring just like ours.
Let's be honest, this site is not the place to question any beauty of the welsh language except to say beauty is always subjective. English is the world language because so much literature has been initiated in that language. As for anthems

This is an example of what I was talking about regarding education Keith.
No amount of further education would have changed the behaviour of this bloke. Sacking him is the only possible reaction. Enough is enough.
His mistake was putting it online. He's entitled to hold that opinion privately though.
For myself, I found Cyrillic to be gibberish, couldn't make hide nor hair of it. Greek is hard too. At least with French, German and Spanish you can pick some stuff out but Cyrillic, they may as well have been speaking a foreign language

Once you learn the cyrillic ,you are open to learn Bulgarian, mun.
Cyrillic is also pronounced as it reads ,which is not the case with Welsh or indeed English

Well that's fine if it's written in an alphabet you can understand but when we were on the Moscow underground, reading a sign written in Cyrillic or understanding the natives was impossible.
If only I'd had a translation app....I didn't have a smart phone back then mind.

I learned it when our son started taking Russian at school.A truly beautiful language that flow along in mellifluous manner. It sounds as it looks with no linguistic tricks or double meanings. Their anthem is beautiful too.
Surprised the lefties haven't made Russian compulsory in schools.

‘Welsh sounds may be difficult to pronounce for the uninitiated, but it’s a myth that Welsh is difficult to spell.
Welsh is phonetic so what you see is what you say. Welsh children are saved the struggle with the ‘cough/though/hiccough’ type of problem when first learning to read.’

Yeah, lets ask some English, French or Russian to spell Caersws or Pontneddfechan and see how they get on. My son does Welsh in school and he couldn't do it.
Blooming heck, many adults can't even spell English words. See what you say is hardly helpful either. I had a friend from Yorkshire who never could say Llansamlet, she always ended up saying Lambs limit.
How do you say Felinfoel....no it's not Feeling foul! it's Velinvoyle....just say what you see, yeah

France Germany and this belter South Africa
All lyrical, tuneful and sung with passion
English is also the world language because our ancestors took over half the world and imposed it on the locals, they also did that in Wales with the Welsh Not.
I agree with your comments re anthems, the German, French are quality tunes as is ours.

Well you do have to understand a fairly basic premise here.
Welsh words are phonetic. Clearly its based on a welsh pronunciation because its ....err, welsh .... 🤷â€â™‚ï¸
The narrowness of your anglo-centric world view is breathtakingly ignorant.
Try ‘tacsi’ ... its because .... oh never mind ...

The Welsh language is far easier to spell and pronounce than English and anybody who has any decent grasp of both languages will tell you that. For example Pontneddfechan is fairly easy to anyone with any knowledge of the Welsh alphabet. You break it up in segments Pont/ nedd uses double D and if you have a grasp of the language and similarly fechan uses the F as a V in English and CH which is in the Welsh alphabet. It is pronounced the way it is spelt unlike English. People from other countries might have difficulty but then I couldnt pronounce things in French or German as I dont have knowledge of their language. Try explaining Leominster is Lemster or Gloucester being Gloster because it isnt frenetically spelt. You dont get that problem with Welsh.

The North Walian accent, is like somebody scraping their nails down a blackboard, have a listen to Glyn Roberts president of the Welsh farmers Union (shiver)
You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game
