Iceland has been forced to apologise after one of its bosses reportedly labelled the Welsh language “gibberish”.
The supermarket, which is headquartered in Deeside in Wales, insisted that a series of statements made by the director of corporate affairs did not “reflect” the company’s views.
It is thought that the statement by Keith Hann was made in a personal blog which has now been privatised. In the same blog, it is alleged he also said that the Welsh language sounded “like someone with bad catarrh clearing his throat”.

The Welsh language is far easier to spell and pronounce than English and anybody who has any decent grasp of both languages will tell you that. For example Pontneddfechan is fairly easy to anyone with any knowledge of the Welsh alphabet. You break it up in segments Pont/ nedd uses double D and if you have a grasp of the language and similarly fechan uses the F as a V in English and CH which is in the Welsh alphabet. It is pronounced the way it is spelt unlike English. People from other countries might have difficulty but then I couldnt pronounce things in French or German as I dont have knowledge of their language. Try explaining Leominster is Lemster or Gloucester being Gloster because it isnt frenetically spelt. You dont get that problem with Welsh.
It's just nonsense. Any Welsh person going to England will not struggle with place names like an English person coming to Wales would. Of course there are some easy words but the way non Welsh presenters on tv struggle with Welsh place names proves my point.
I was in the the National Maritime museum a while back...years now, there were some teens looking at a map and one of them asked "where is A bear to wee! it didn't help him any when I said you're in it, it's Swansea.
When I was a postman up on Gower Road I was regularly stopped by people looking for places they couldn't pronounce.
That's not really good is it? "Welsh is a silly language" is not exactly up there with holocaust denial.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Not o sure about that Doc reading the invective it generates. Wales is a split country
The English bit where most live and work and where bilingual forms are sent to people who neither want nor need them and the Welsh bit where they speak Welsh and denigate anyone else who does not. If your north Walian ,south Welsh is a dialect and if south Welsh the north speak with a ob full of catarrh which is never pleasant.
Roads signs do not have to be bilingual as welsh speakers can understand where they are like Flint or FFlint. Only in Wales could this madness occur and be defended. Better still,Welcome to Waunarlydd /Croeso y Waunarlydd.
What that Iceland director did was supremely tackless and dumb as Richard Walker is very socially adroit and next time he visited Bangor or Caernarfon/Caernarvon the staff would have hammered him.

Welcome to the 1970s. Croeso i’r 1970s.
When did you leave Cymru Perch ? Our Cymru is not like this today.
Your Wales is the Wales of George Thomas. Our Wales is the Wales of Michael Sheen.
Wales does things better when it does things together. Together stronger.
We love our bilingual road signs. And not even just to upset the little Englanders. They are not that important.

That would be Your opinion doc I would of thought that it depends on the area you live, The area we live has a high speaking or understanding of Welsh. In North Wales south of he A55 80% of people would speak or understand the Welsh language.

If place names were pronounced as they were spelt, how come true Scousers say Chliverpeeoool
Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Yes but that is because the English have no grasp of the Welsh language. Anyone who knows the Welsh alphabet can spell and say Welsh words. Those like you who chose not to learn it obviously will struggle. Anyone who can do both will tell you Welsh is easier to say as it is spoken Frenetically and doesnt have words that could be said in different ways or where you drop part of the word. Does cough, dough and tough sound alike. They dont. Yet the only difference is the first letter. Try pronouncing Leicester it is pronounced Lester.
What about Derby. It could be pronounced Darby or Dyrby.

A language is a means of human dialogue. No more than that.
We have towns where welsh speaking is virtually non existent and it being compulsory in schools in those areas does not make it loved. Do you not see this/
Not so long ago,a sister of mine applied for a management job in Social Services in Queensferry area.Wasnt considered as she is not a Welsh speaker.A highly qualified dedicated woman not considered because she cannot speak a language none of the people can understand

Why do welsh language "debates" get personal.

It isnt true none of the people understand Welsh. English speakers are choosing Welsh education for their children.
How many Welsh secondary schools were there in Swansea. None. Today there are 2 and 1 is the most oversubscribed school in Swansea.
This is happening throughout Wales and is basically people power. They are the ones making decisions that is leading to the council increasing the number of Welsh schools in the city.
Neath Port Talbot has 2 Welsh language comprehensives and Cardiff. Quite an odd thing when Wales supposedly has no Welsh speakers

No. Wrexham is south of the expressway for a start. So are many towns where Welsh is not spoken as a lingua Franca.

Our Wales?
Written by someone who displays a Southern Irish flag on every one of their contributions?
And why again does this subject get personal.Understand this .You speak Welsh fine.Dont expect everyone else to enjoy it being forced on them as it is.
Nothing divides as this language does.
We are talking about a language .
I speak 3 others . If people want to rubbish them, then fine.
I would not force English on anyone. You shouldn’t enforce Welsh

Its quite normal, half the world uses more than one language.
Say no to Wales-shire, Cymru is a nation.

The fact is English is being forced on people. English is compulsory even in Welsh language schools. You can go back to my grandfathers and great grandfathers days when kids were caned if they spoke in Welsh. That is the real problem and you keep trying to have a go at the Welsh language. If you live in Wales you learn Welsh. No different to if you live in France you learn French or German in Germany or is it because you dislike the Welsh language. It is extremely sad that people like yourself hate a language so much.

If you live in Wales ,you will speak English at some point.
Most who live in towns do not.Fact.
All who live in Wales are forced fed Welsh.
Most never use welsh outside school.
Many on here clearly not Swansea people so this debate is skewed from the start..
English is not forced. It s why interpreters are needed in much of east Lancashire and parts of Bradford because they do not have English as mother tongue nor are inclined to learn it.
All Welsh people speak Welsh especially when requesting money from clients
