Scandinavia is no nirvana. Denmark comes out as the happiest country in the world. Not for those travellers/refugees who are dumped there in the grottiest regions. Liberalism in Sweden has led to significant changes in crime issues Still,at least it was "neutral" in both wars [Post edited 21 Feb 2021 16:03]

I was answering someone who said it was number one. Where did I say it wasn’t high ranking?

It has been high ranking. It is also no socialist country in the way you mean.

You asked "left wing". You didn't say socialist so you've now moved the goalposts. You can have left wing or left leaning governments in capitalist countries like the Nordic countries. If you meant socialist you should have said socialist.

Tell that to those who lived under State fascism. People escaped socialism and never ever want it again. Speak to a Magyar next time in Budapest or a Czech when on the lash in Prague or Brno. They ll tell you all you need to know from working for the State, living in a State home ,holidaying,if lucky ,in a State holiday home ,sending their kids to the State school where they would join the youth section of the workers party . They would be instructed to look out for those not towing the party line or even asking questions . The State provided for them all they needed or said they would need.

I repeat. You said “left wing”. If you meant to say communist or socialist you wouldn’t have had an argument from me. You don’t hear me say anything of the sort. You can read what I write but don’t put words into my mouth. Clearly you said one thing but meant something else so it’s been a waste of energy.

Suppose that was Matt Hancock's fault too. Most places had a problem sourcing enough, a problem significantly exacerbated by the majority of it being made in China, the source of the virus in the first place. If nothing else comes from this, the wisdom of most Global supply chains ending in the same place, a particularly dodgy place if we're being honest, needs to be looked at.

Way before the Covid-19 crisis happened many people went on about the 1918 flu epidemic that killed tens of millions. The entire world and its governments seemed to have been oblivious to what could happen, whilst having no wide ranging contingency plans to counteract an emergency that many scientists had prophesised to be "only a matter of time" anyhow. It would have been wise if there had been some form of ‘civil defense’ type initiative with indigenous factories having operational capability to switch or diversify into full scale production mode to make higher grade FFP3/PPE kit. It would also be reassuring if there were in future extra mothballed factories ready to kick into action if the orders came to do so, because demand would obviously only be there in an epidemic/pandemic.

Yes indeed i.e. same with blast furnace and steel making capacity that Lord West said is of vital strategic interest.

Arc furnace technology sounds interesting to me. Don't know much about it but taking a lead in recycling technology can't be a bad thing. Just imagine how much scrap steel is sitting out there just waiting to be reused.

Arc furnaces are great for recycling old scrap metal including steel, but there will always be a need for new steel which means blast furnaces are needed to refine iron ore and combine it with carbon to make steel.

It’s a good read because it’s Guardian man. Get some balance and read the Telegraph Everyone should challenge and test their own beliefs and sticking rigidly to one side is no good. We are seeing light at the end of a tunnel so rejoice and be grateful we live where we do. Starter today ,to his credit, supported Johnson s exit strategy .

Matty dished out a 30million pound contract to his Mate, who had no experience in the business that he was given the contract for and he couldn't even do the job, he might have been able to pour a decent pint though, but the PPE had to be sourced from elsewhere, Track and Trace another mighty cock, again that contract was given to the Baroness who didn't have a clue and track and trace was an absolute disaster, facts they are, absolute facts I don't know what sides has to do with anything, you use that to try and deflect the evidence and the truth.

Sounds like fraud. The righties on here will think it's ok though.

Thing is, its not about the Tory's v Labour here for me, it's about the right and wrongs, better qualified people put their hands up to source and supply PPE, but were turned down in favour of others who obviously weren't qualified, I'd say the same if was any other, people in power should be above suspicion for me and they weren't here, so it makes you wonder about what else as maybe gone on. There's to much smoke and mirrors with this government, lots of things are bigged up to be all singing and dancing. The vaccines have been a massive success, so credit where credit is due there.

Yeah and it's been led by people described by people including you as vile. The scientists who created this may well be Conservative voters as could be the case when the nurse/doctor sticks that needle in your arm. Time to reflect Steve. You can't ever wipe out Tories. You're a socialist and believe in democracy.Right?

Bearing in mind I cannot stand Toynbee and have to filter out some obvious spin in some parts, she's dead right. This government is guilty of cronyism, chumocracy, it's corrupt and self serving to an extent I don't remember seeing before. The scandal over these contracts cries out for an investigation. Hancock can say he doesn't care ( I don't remember him saying that but that he felt he'd done the right thing) or whatever he did say because he knows one simple thing, as long as he does what Bojo tells him, he's pretty safe. I've banged on before about the civil sevice, used to annoy clasie with it. Ive said many times our civil service is bent. High up people sign contracts, do deals, have cosy lunches with companies and then write off billions in taxes....when they leave the civil service where do they end up? Far too often employed by the comanies they gave contracts too or did favours for in other ways. These politicians and civil servants get paid fortunes (I don't mean johhny and Jane answering phones in Swansea Vale, I mean the top end CS) and when they leave they usually end up in very well paid jobs. Look at Osborne, left government and the last I heard he had 6 jobs, he seems to need the "8 days a week" the Beatles sang about except his 8 days is about love of money, not a woman. Ths country needs a political revolution to rid us of all these grabbing, self serving and largely useless politicians and the civil service needs a good clear out and strong rules put in place to prevent any corruption.
