The benchmark is not the autos 21:06 - Feb 27 with 3016 viewsDr_Parnassus

I steered clear from the match day thread as it’s getting very toxic in recent months, but I have just read it and shuddered at some of the comments.

There seems to be a bar of expected achievement (automatics) and anything below that deemed as failure and reason for blame.

I find that truly remarkable.

The automatics would be an incredible achievement, way beyond expectation. Brentford and Norwich are far better sides with players being touted for £20m and £30m. We have cobbled together a side of local youth players and young loanees added with a few bargain oldies.

I am stunned we are going into March and automatics is a genuine chance. I don’t quite see how we have kept up this form (we have an 800k winger as a converted striker due to not having one) but we have and are here on merit. That is down to the players and management team.

But it seems many have forgotten this and have moved the goalposts of expectation from play-offs... to being in the top 2 in the division and using form more fitting for the realistic goal as opposed to the incredible feat - as a stick to beat the manager and team with.

We are not the best team in the league, we aren’t the second best team in the league. We don’t really deserve to go up in the top 2. Nobody is to blame for that, it’s the situation. In the same way as nobody is to blame if Leeds don’t qualify for the Champions League...

One of our strengths in years gone by was the fans and the club knowing what was in front of them and being realistic with their goals. Which is why we allowed Martinez to incorporate a new style, which required patience. Sadly in the mire of the PL many of our fans lost that sense and it hasn’t really returned.

Some of the comments on here are bordering on agenda filled, because they don’t represent any sensible train of thought. If people are expecting us to win every game, I really do question their sanity.

How can you read I think we should be 5th from that?

I'm expecting autos when Cooper grows some balls and if we don't make it we'll die trying.

Not make excuses for a manager too afraid of his own shadow.

Aside from him making excuses, what is your take on the 3/5/2 formation and should we be changing it?

I feel it is holding us back as an attacking outfit.

He's worse than dull, he's warped.

And that pitiful opening post - laughable.

This league, this season especially has been there for the taking.

We are an absolute juggernaut compared to 80% of the league.

Cobbled together loan players and a few golden oldies. Guehi is perhaps the envy of every team in the league while Bennett played a big part in Wolves getting to the EPL.

Roberts is arguably a £15m full back who will be playing EPL next season and Matty is one of the best midfielders in the league. Throw in the luxury of £80k a week Ayew and the play offs were the bear minimum.

We've done well but let's not pity ourselves and rally behind a boring, staid manager who throttles the life and adventure out of us.

We go with 8 or 9 defensive minded players and look to stifle games, nick goals and control games sitting back in position without the ball.

This is Garry Monk and we all know how that ended.

Except Cooper insists on flogging the same 9 or 10 players in every game.

Same old system, same old lack of style.

And when we need to change it, he doesn't have a clue.

Chucking loads of random players into random positions just shows a complete lack of in game management

His first sub today, on 78 minutes nonetheless was when they had equalised and what was it?

Jay Fulton for Yan Dhanda.

I'll just end with a WTF

Out of interest, why have you suddenly decided to go on this tirade tonight against our 'staid' manager who flogs the same 8 or 9 players every game (show me a championship side who doesn't!?) after a game in which we had by far the lions share of possession, chances, their keeper made numerous saves&2 of their goals were frankly freaks?????

It's not tonight, it's been most of the season

Bristol City were awful, the worst team down there this season

And the whole 'should have scored 2 or 3 in the first half' is also a nonsense.

If we'd have got one we'd have sat back. Exactly the same as we did after the pen and exactly the same as we've done all season.

Other Championship teams play the same players and formation every game? Dc they??

It's served us well but by Fack i'd like to see us capable enough to try something else.

Especially the last couple of months when performances have been flat or teams keep Roberts and Bidwell pinned back.

I've said it numerous times but Guehi is the big problem in us changing formation. He works in a 3. EPL quality, but in a 4 he's League 2.

So what about 343, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater, but let's see some proper width other than our full backs, who havent grown up as being the main stacking options of their teams

********* Freddie *********

** Lati * Cabango * Guehi **

Roberts * Matty * Smith * Bids

Arriola *** Ayew *** Lowe

But in other games let's give more minutes to Manning, go one up top giving Ayew or Lowe a breather and again getting some width on the pitch.

Of course, I'm talking about today's game.

If you're getting confused with my opening sentence I'm replying to your 'why am I only attacking our boring manager tonight'

The issues in today's game are the same in others, except today these were a hideous 3 points to drop. Sit back, defend without the ball, get back in positions and the Jay Fulton sub 🙈

You're right, i am struggling to understand.

Because the point your making is neither logical or valid. Boring manager, but we create numerous chances and have ridiculous possession. Even in second half we out chanced them despite them improving.

Which is very different to a lot of other games where maybe we could have been called 'staid' and 'boring' but snatched a goal and saw the game out.

He can't win with people like you. Moan if we play one way, moan if we perform in a different manner. Same lazy criticisms despite the games being entirely different.

Yep . 21 goal attempts for us today in a game we attacked with intent playing some very good football in that first half when we had 12 goal attempts to their none and 70% ball possession.

Then we gifted them three second half goals after going ahead. For a team that’s kept 17 clean sheets it was hard to believe.

But we certainly didn’t sit back. The stats clearly confirm that. Beyond doubt. Whatever happens some will always look to criticise. It’s usually in their nature. Best ignored.

An soon as we scored we sat back, didn't you watch the game?

And yes, we did create more in the first half but that was the worst side we've played to date. My Bristol City mate telling me all week how awful they are, how little of the ball they see, how unbelievably little chances they create

So the first half was a must, not something we should have been glad about.

But, had we scored one, we'd have sat back, because we don't get at teams, we don't kill them off. And we rely far too heavily on Roberts and Bidwell as main attacking options.

So when City shifted to 4 at the back and decided to join the game our limitations were once again exposed

We don't have patterns of play, we don't pass and move, we don't keep the ball and pull teams around the pitch and we worry too much how teams can hurt us instead of how we can hurt them.

And when teams are hurting us Cooper doesn't know how to react. God forbid if we go behind because that's when Cooper really looks like a pub manager, threw all our subs on at 60 mins last week costing us a change after an injury and reverted back to form today, left it laughably until the 78th min and then when we needed a win brought on Jay for our only recognised number 10.

And then...... Wait for it, made the first attacking change when we were losing 2 mins later.

The team has been crying out for change but Coopers ego is out of control.

We've got to integrate genuine first team players who are sat on the bench and use them more often. We've got to work on different styles and formations and we've got to show a bit of balls.

That's not reinventing the wheel, that's a staple diet of any pro football club.

Ha see, moans when Cooper doesn't change anything. Then when he does you accuse him of making changes 'like a pub team manager'!

And the bit about killing teams off - how many games have we actually ended up losing from winning positions this season? One of the lowest in the league.

What did i say about throwing shitt at the wall and hoping it sticks!?

There's a massive difference between being more proactive and adapting to tactical situations and making a sub or 2 on the hour to chucking them all on because he's punch drunk and has lost control.

Hey, you can throw back all the chirpy little stats you want.

The same you could with John Hollins, Paulo Sousa and worst of all Garry Monk.

No point having a football debate with a laughing hyena like you because Monk got us to our highest ever EPL position.

He also started the rot and relegation but doesn't matter.....

Yes I certainly watched the game. Every second of it.

And thoroughly enjoyed the flowing football of that first half. Playing through a packed defence at will I still can’t believe we didn’t score.

Ah well if you’re relying on info from your Bristol City mate, I can’t compete with that lol. Did he see their excellent win against Boro in the week I wonder?

Anyway, pointless discussion as people like you have made up their minds, then stick to your point of view stubbornly when there’s clear evidence to the contrary and yes backed up by silly old stats. Our problem yesterday was simple and straightforward - we couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo. We had nothing up front. Powderpuff attack.

And we break at a snail’s pace. Once or twice Bristol attacks broke down and we retrieved the ball in our penalty area. I wanted to see the ball launched upfield to where Lowe should have been on the halfway line staying onside. Instead of that we took 8 to 10 mostly sideways passes to eventually get the ball into their half giving them all the time in the world to get their mass defence organised. Even the top teams, Liverpool and Man City use the long ball when it is on to catch opponents unawares. Lowe has pace - we should try it occasionally.

Well yes he did, what a strange question, he's a season ticket holder that goes home and away, when there's no pandemic like.

I would trust his viewpoint before yours.

He even warned me about the young full back and lo and behold he got hooked before half time.

Hopefully people will stop fetishising over our defence stats now and start concentrating on ways to actually create more chances.

Because those silly stats are among the lowest in the league

And PS if we played like we did in the first half against every team there'd be no complaints from anyone.

But we don't....

..... and they were pitiful!!

Rotherham we got away with it. Brentford, Forest, Hudds, Coventry we've been awful. 7 goals against in consecutive Saturday's.

And answer me this.... Is it so wonderful having good defensive stats when 9 of your outfield players are defensive type players?

Most teams would get the same issues. Good at the back, crap going forward.

You’re concentrating on your own little agenda

Our players, individually and collectively have been outstanding throughout the season with the exception of terrible second half’s recently ( Hudds and Bristol ). Incidentally Bennett was absent at both times, coincidence probably but he’s been a tower of experienced strength there hasn’t he.

Of course we have defended brilliantly. Utilising mainly a 3-5-2 formation which is not as defensive as you seem to think. With two forwards and wing backs high up the pitch creating goals plus one of the three in midfield advanced we get plenty of forward momentum. But out of possession we keep shape and defend well of course.

You aren’t giving any credit for anything. You talk of defensive stats as though they’re meaningless when in fact it’s taken a massive effort from our players who have been superb

I’m not carrying on with this conversation as it’ll change nothing. You are only interested in bashing our manager who has done really well, all things considered. Note: always consider the wider picture in football.

He's also conveniently forgetting that Roberts who he'd pass off as being purely defensive is up there with divisions best for creating chances, not to mention his decent scoring record. Bidwell on the other side is similar if not as prolific.

Yes of course

Football is a game of opinions but the opinions that you value the most are always balanced. They take all relevant things into consideration without an agenda. They are open to change and do not rigidly stick to one stance...

Those constantly slagging off our manager or team have little idea. Really. In many cases they’ve closed off their brains to accepting any alternative views.

Those consistently finding reasons to spin poor performances into positives are not balanced.

It's admirable being a loyal supporter and I would defend the Swans to any outside dissenter, but inside the ranks, I can be honest and call a spade a spade.

Cooper has done well overall, he's come in on the back of an exciting but under-achieving season of Potter, but he's slowly Garry Monked us. It's very short termism and Cooper always puts himself in the shop window if you ask me.

Never his fault, always someone or something else.

He's also showing huge limitations as he's got stuck in a formation which now and again needs changing and adapting.

Does he have the nous to change?

This will be the question that defines his time here as we're getting found out.

Every time we score ,we it back.Fact
We invite teams on to us then Woody, bless him rolls the ball direct to players are are immediately pressed and then try to pass the ball back to him in panic.
HTF is this good.

Woody is the slowest goalkeeper we have ever had in thought, deed and action. I it a tactic to kick the ball right into touch and give the ball literally to the opposition to lump it back into our box where he dithers and allows everyone else to do his work.

How many goals have been scored whilst he is literally motionless on his line.

This chap is picked and that is why Cooper can be hammered.Accept 2nd best by all means but I aint playing that game.

This season is our best chance to get back up as the standard is appalling.. Next year will be harder with Blades,Baggies and Fulham coming down.

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not
