“We need to rotate” 19:32 - Mar 20 with 13089 viewsDr_Parnassus

Can we stop with that nonsense now please, and realise the fact that we have an incredibly front loaded and lop sided squad.

Bidwell looked like a player that had been rotated, no sharpness and no fluidity and about 3 yards off the pace. Whittaker for all his effort has nowhere near the physical attributes to be playing at this level yet, he showed what he could be at times and is going to be a very good player I have no doubt, but he was knocked off the ball every time he was challenged and we gave up possession far too easily. Naughton is not a centre back and what benefits he may give us when we have the ball sadly we lose without it, we were dominated in the air in both boxes.

We need to play our best team and accept we will be tired at times, that’s the nature of football when you don’t have a big squad full of quality. Which is something we don’t have despite many pretending otherwise.

I am full of praise for the management team and their achievements thus far but one area where I feel disappointed in is I don’t think they have blocked out the noise efficiently enough. To me, it looks like they have allowed desperate opinion to be picked up by journalists and has allowed that to permeate their decision making. This latest game seems to be the epitome of that. It was a disjointed game with what looked like a cobbled together team.

Cabango, Lowe and Smith have to start.

That seems to be what the notion has been hijacked as today yes. It's bizarre.

Last game is where you had that accolade, you said it was the exact team you would have chosen. It was without Lowe and started Whittaker and had half a team of changes.... It was the worst performance of the season.

This week he started Hourihane and Lowe and apart from the inclusion of Routledge went with much the same team that he gets abused for ''running into the ground''.

But if it makes your lot happy then yes, of course you have been calling for him to start these players....

It was without Lowe? He started? Hourihane also started against Preston?

The team grew into the formation, attacking football with very good players, results like that can and will happen.

Lowe and Ayew having the week break after their international travelling has worked wonders, I was expecting the performances to change, I'm hoping that was the first of many.

You can pick any formation you like but if you take to a game with the mentality of Cooper-ball you'll only have one outcome. Spoil, nick, sit back in position, allow the opposition to come at you and dominate possession, look to hold on.... that's what we've had for the vast majority of the season.

No wonder the players had a spring in their step v Millwall, they were enjoying attacking in a football game again. Enjoying seeing the ball more.

Our back 4 and 3 midfielders (a platform/unit of 7) had 42% of the possession compared to Millwall's equivalent platform of 8 with just 31%

That's where this game was won. Ayew and Lowe more than did their jobs but having that force behind you and the will to play further up the pitch gave us something we've been missing for most of the season, bar the odd decent game here and there.

The only games we can honestly look back on this season and talk favourably about performance, especially, over the result have been....

Brentford away
Cardiff away
Watford home
Reading home
Norwich home
Bristol City home (first half mostly)

So it's literally a handful of games where we can say that.

And you can try and mock certain tactical or player replacement ideas all you like but that will never change the fact we needed to change things. It got so bad in the end Cooper was looking over his shoulder.

And categorically, in the last 3 months Lowe and Ayew should both have had spells on the sideline. To laugh now because they scored goals in this last game means nothing.

Football is cyclical, form is cyclical. Players have no God given right to be playing when they aren't performing. But Cooper has watched over our slide and has conceded the Automatic slots - or at least it looks like that.

Had Cooper found the balls and courage to change things up in Feb/March, given Ayew and Lowe the kick up their arse they both needed then things may have been a lot different.

Had Cooper freshened up the tired looking 352 and worked on a different approach, things may have been a lot different.

These changes were crying out to be made.

The NOISE MADE IT HAPPEN.

Made what happen? You think we had more possession because ''the noise'' said they wanted more possession? I am pretty sure everybody wants more possession mate, don't they? I don't think that's unique to the anti Cooper brigade.

''The noise'' has simply been stating that Cooper is using players he shouldn't be using such as Lowe and playing players like Whittaker instead. The noise has been calling for Hourihane to be nowhere near the team. The noise has been suggesting we drop Ayew.

I don't see anything synonymous with what ''the noise'' has been calling for with the display against Millwall. Any idiot can say ''I want us to attack more'', doesn't mean Cooper has only just been made aware of than notion by berks on social media and as a result delivered that.

We played well yes. Thankfully it was able to be made that way by many of the players that have been knocked on here week after week since the new year. I can only hope this fatigue and must rotate mantra has been firmly knocked on the head.

Yeah, I would personally play Cabango in a 433

Cooper, who knows more than me, didn’t even start him in the formation he’s most suited to. If he doesn’t want to play him there, it would be mental to play him on the right of the three, for the reasons you learnt the other day, when I provided a link explaining the role.

Thank you for having the humility to state you can see the logic in not starting Smith every game.

Cabango is an interesting one because I would never pick him over Bennett so that would just leave Guehi.

Guehi is hopeless with a high ball down his neck but offers us the ability with the ball at his feet.

Cabango isn't a good footballer. We won't be as effective playing out from the back with Cabango.

So if it's the 4 at the back I would stay as we were v Millwall (still be worried about Guehi though)

The noise and the pressure brought about a complete change of approach and mentality.

The finite detail of that isn't the most important. It's the fact that we went into the game with a different mindset and belief.

Keep the same belief and mindset and we'll win more than we lose and performances will improve.

Having a more attacking/ball playing balance will also help there. Picking out Lowe and Ayew for yesterday's game shows how naive you are.

I’m picking them out because they are the ones that have been slated by said noise, I also singled out Hourihane and Woodman for the same reasons. Players I have also been critical of.

But you seem to be thinking that the manager said to his players “we have to attack today chaps coz they said on Twitter and Planetswans we should”. It just sounds ludicrous.

Games are different. I would imagine had we scored in the first minute then it may have looked different. The fact we scored just before half-time benefited us as we could take stock in the break and not begin to sit off and give Millwall players belief they could get back into it.

Next week we could go out with the same mentality, same players, same formation and get absolutely dominated. But then he would be slated for not changing and being accused of not telling his players to do the same again. It seems like a very basic level of summation to state we played well because Twitter told us to.

Had we sat back second half you may have had a point about your 1st minute theory

But we didn't. We kept going and going and that was worlds apart from what we'd seen under Cooper this season.

And lastly, if you couldn't see the complete change of approach in this last game versus any previously, or at least the huge majority, then you really are more naive than I've given you credit for.

That’s why I said the goal came at a good time, it gave us the break to take stock and not naturally sit back as players tend to do once a goal is scored. There is a reason scoring before halftime is seen as a favourable time to score.

You are only stating there was a change of approach because we played well and got a favourable result. If we play badly next week you will criticise that same approach. An approach is something that can be hijacked to suit any narrative you want when in reality it may not change at all.

Every single game is different, every match situation is different. We went in with confidence and belief yes, but we have done that before and lost too. Bristol City being a prime example. We smashed them and got beat 3-1. We had 70% possession, 20+ shots and I’m sure Cooper was criticised after that game for his approach.

Last paragraph absolute nonsense.

We got the goal against Bristol and immediately went on back foot. We were playing a team ravaged by injuries and let them off the hook.

It’s absolutely true, not nonsense.

We went into that game much the same way we went into this one, we were unlucky not to be 3-0 up at halftime.

We dominated them completely, they had 4 shots on target and scored with 3.

This is my point regarding scoring just before half time. Had we not done that the game may have turned out completely different.

Put it this way. If we played exactly the same way against Millwall, except Ayew and Lowe missed their chances (which they could well have done, they were all technically superb)... and their header that hit the inside of the post sneaked in... there would be no threads stating how good our approach was or how well we played.

We both know that.

No idea.

We lost because we couldn't carve out enough quality chances and take them while giving up sloppy chances to them. 11 corners plus free kicks was 11 chances plus free kicks that Cabango could have caused a threat that was not there.

He may have had more shots than Lowe has had in a while but as I said, what he offered us in that respect we lost in forward and midfield link play. Most of MW's moments came from solo efforts and not team ones. This contributed to us looking quite disjoined.

Not having a go at the lad, he's just not a physical player yet and in my opinion to play up front for us you have to have at least a modicum of physicality.

You are welcome to disagree.

We dominated them completely, because they were a team ravaged by injuries. Pearson made one change and they starting to get a foothold in the game.

We played well against Millwall apart from the first 10 minutes, I would have said as much after the game regardless of result. I actually said it felt like we were growing into the formation well before we scored goal.

Lowe and Ayew haven't been getting chances before Saturday, it was a completely different set up and way of playing which was a breath of fresh air from what we have been seeing recently.

Difficult one isn’t it?

Cabango brings a physical presence Bennett doesn’t have. Guehi has the power but not the height. Bennett has the best positional sense and leads/organises the back four very well. Guehi is undoubtedly the best footballer. None of them afraid to put their bodies on the line.

I wouldn’t argue too hard with any combination of them in a back four, though I’d personally like Cabango in there, for the extra physical presence and the ability to nick the odd goal.

In the 352 we’ve been playing, Bennett for me, as the other two are in more fluid roles and his positional sense comes to the fore. Guehi, Naughton and Latabaudiere ahead of the both of them for the wide central roles every time.

We dominated them completely because we played well and were attacking throughout. Being ravaged by injuries is no different to the result of rotation surely? We lost that game despite smashing them in every department.

We will have to disagree then, because I don’t think there is any way on this planet if we lost that game 1-0 but played exactly the same way and created and conceded exactly the same chances that there would be any threads of praise for Cooper or the team on here. None.

Which is my point that next week we could go into the game exactly the same way, same attitude, same philosophy - not get the result and we are back to being exhausted, negative and mismanaged again.

Well that depends doesn't it, because if we hadn't taken our chances - perfectly plausible - and we had decided to see the game out, or not look to create more, then yes, of course the criticism would have flowed in and Cooper could have been looking at the exit door.

But that's the whole bloody point and what was so refreshing about Saturday. We changed our mindset and we were going to have a go. Die trying, if you like.

Not trying to "shithouse" our way through a game like we've done since January.

What’s who talking about? You know I wrote that don’t you?

Absolutely we went in with confidence. I said in the week it’s down to Cooper to rise to the challenge now to instil belief and confidence into the players, it’s a large part of a managers job and a test he hasn’t really had to pass previously as the results were doing that for him.

He failed to do that last week, we looked scared to pass, shoot or do anything creative for fear of losing the ball. This week we went out confident, the passing was crisp and there was no second guessing in the chances we had, they were put away and executed with absolute confidence.

I have explained the excellent scoring before half time point. Once a team scores, their natural instinct is to protect that and the oppositions natural instinct is to attack and get it back. Scoring before half time provides a break in that natural reaction where emotions are heightened and the team can take stock and come out almost like it’s a new game. This is something that has been true forever, it’s not a modern phenomenon.

That ship has sailed.Millwall beaten.
Now then,now then ,now then.

Wednesday . Will this see a continued resurgence and show the millwall game an isolated good show. Time will tell.

We could see a Woody spectacular missing a punch ,cross or scuffed shot,or imply stroking the ball straight to Bannon-who is very good.
We could see wayne do what he often does, lose the ball or pass it straight to the opposition

We could also destroy them.

Steve might also wear a suit and not look like a homeless person.

Ah well, this guy really is a lost cause.

Saying we went into the game with confidence is possibly the most ludicrous thing i've read on here.

And I'm not sure he even watched the game because the first 10/15 minutes we were anything but "confident" and we couldn't get into it.

But we stuck to our guns and played our way into it, which was a massive showing of character and belief. A belief that showed to everyone our squad of players are better than they've been allowed to show.

Football can take any game in any sort of direction, everyone knows that, but that's why long term thinking and philosophies are so important - DNA if you like - because when you have the right belief and mindset in what you're trying to do, even if it doesn't always come off, you stick with it. This has proven to be the most important aspect of our recent history.

Performances and courage will breed better results.

Anything you don’t like to accept is ludicrous. However that doesn’t stop it actually being the truth. Referring to me in the third person, for whatever bizarre reason you are deciding to do that won’t change that, just makes it look like you have little confidence in what you are saying, which is likely to be the case.

Being on a bad run doesn’t mean you cannot instil confidence in a team sat in the top 4 of the league. I’m not sure where you are mustering that notion from. We clearly went into that game with the firm belief we could win, unless you think a confidence fairy came and sprinkles his/her magic on the 15 minute mark?

15 mins in is nothing, it’s not a reflection of attitude, many occasions teams take 10-15 mins to settle into a game. It’s completely normal. Just as we can dominate the first 15 mins and lose heavily, doesn’t mean we went into the game with confidence, it’s more likely to be the opposite.

Long term results would suggest months of results. We are 4th, after finishing 6th last year. Whatever approach we have taken game to game for the last 2 years has worked both short and long term. When we win you can argue our approach is to attack with confidence, when we lose you can argue we went into the game lacking in belief and creativity - that’s football and that’s why these forums exist, fans are fickle.

Win another 2 games and that 47% sacking piece of the pie may well be below 40%. That’s football.

Completely different to rotation, you wouldn't rest 8 players at once would you?

Can only speak for myself but If the performance is good, he will get praise, as he did when we went to Norwich, played excellent, missed chances and lost the game 1-0.

I wouldn’t, no. But I don’t believe in extreme rotation at all when the options aren’t great. Even 4 is too much. But regardless you have to play what’s in front of you, you don’t have 20+ shots and 70% possession by playing negative football no matter who it’s against.

If that’s the case Risca then I can only hope it’s true. However I am absolutely positive we would not be seeing any of the threads or posts we are seeing now if those 4 key chances (3 Swans and 1 Millwall) had a foot of error bound each and we lost 1-0.

Course we would have and it's pathetic this guy sees it like this.

All fans have been asking for is a bit more football and courage to get on the ball.

Re that Norwich defeat I stuck a few quid on us with 20/15 to go because I thought we were looking the most likely and playing well. That's a fact.

The game went the other way that day but no complaints from anyone. Look back at social media and the Ozzie guy will see this for himself. That's if he's honest which is looking more and more by the day he's anything but.

He talks of the Bristol City game and the 70% possession as if it's the norm when it was the exception and we even decided to Cooper our way through that in the second half.

The boy's dishonest and naive.

She’s trying to flog a dead horse. She may pull the wool over some peoples eyes but she won’t pull the wool over mine.

Fans are always asking to be better, that’s the nature of being a football fan. But that isn’t what she has suggested. She has suggested that it was social media pressure that made the team play well, even though it was essentially the side she has been slagging off all season. It’s ridiculous as much as it is fantasy island stuff.

I don’t believe for a second the Welshie would be on here saying how brilliant we played had we lost, and I’m sure should we lose against Sheffield Wednesday and play with the same attitude we would revert to being turgid and fearful.

Easy to make posts silly like that isn’t it. Sorry, you won’t get anywhere with me. Which I’m sure you already know. Wasting your time.
