There is no doubt the vaccine programme is saving lives, the difference is stark. However, the UK’s dealing of the pandemic doesn’t make great reading.
Unfortunately we have the highest total number of deaths in Europe, we are also 5th highest in terms of total numbers of deaths across the world (but I have some doubts on that as China have only reported 4.6k deaths) we are 7th highest in the deaths per capita behind Hungary, Czech Replublic, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Belgium and Italy while Ireland is almost half ours. In terms of deaths under 65 years we had the second highest mortality rate in Europe (behind Bulgaria).
The landscape should now change with the vaccine, but overall our handlings not been great. |

Not according to the respected Stats site Statista.
We are 5th highest for total number of deaths in the world, in terms of deaths per 100,000 across the EU area are now 8th as Italy have overtaken us. The first 5 countries with the highest Covid death rates per 100,000 are all former Eastern Block countries who are nowhere near as developed as us, immediately below them and directly above us are Belgium and Italy. If we look at Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland their mortality rates are nearly 50% lower than ours. Had we not struck gold with the vaccines I shudder to think where we’d be now.
