| The end of gas? on 14:57 - May 23 by Catullus | You're still at it then. You'll never accept that renewable energy tech will one day improve to the point we don't need fossil fuels? Look at it this way, way back before the industrial revolution people would never accept that many of the advancements we enjoy today were possible. I posted the link to the predictions, to the things that were considered impossible including tarvelling at speed in cars. The world moved on, technology impoved, new inventions and new ways of thinking opened up possibilites that had only been seen in science fiction books and films. If you want to stand still, or want to believe the world will stand still then carry on. Most of the world will keep on moving though, for beter or for worse. |
There you go lying about me again, you can't help yourself. I have made it clear many times that I am for moving forward and Generators based on 13th century windmills is not the way forward. I am also for 3rd world countries moving forward from where they are now and that means them using fossil fuels to raise the living standards of their people. They are doing so, moving forward for them, there are 300 Coal fired stations with clean technology being built and another 200 proposed, a lot of them are being financed by the Chinese and Russians while they laugh at the stupidity of the western world crippling their nations with expensive intermittent energy. https://www.carbonbrief.org/ma The long term way forward as I have stated many times is SMRs and MSRs with fail safe designs. Not sure any new windmills have been built based on 13th designs. If you mean the large efficient, made to 21st century designs, wind turbines that produce the cheapest electricity please say.

Except they don't produce the cheapest electricity. Not when Coal & Gas prices have £15/mw added as Carbon Tax. Do you understand that wind farms get paid subsidies that increase their prices to 2 to 3 times that of Gas?

I don't care how clean a coal fired station is you still have to ine the coal. No matter hwo much cleaner they are there is still waste. These modular nuclear reactors, the waste from them is radioactive for how many years? So where do we dispose of it? If the whole world was powered by nuclear reactors we would have so much waste one day we'd find the hole planet was polluted. These thinsg you talk about are not renewable and will merely shift the problem to future generations. Why do you place so much faith in the Chinese and the Russians? PS, I haven't lied about you, coal and nuclear are not moving forward, they are standing still. They are todays technology, we need technology that won't cause so much harm to the planet.

You think that Wind & Solar are the answer despite all the problems I have shown you. Where is the money going to come from to develop those new energy we need when Billions and soon Trillions are being wasted on wind, solar & batteries ? Arrogance unbounded-check The myth of 'clean coal'-check (yes coal can be burned to reduce NO and SO compounds but carbon capture is technically difficult and "clean coal' is so costly its not being adopted) Cecil Rhodes style colonialism-check (still using outmoded language and patronising those in LMICs) Myth that fossil fuel burning will drive LMIC economic development -check (without a nation-wide infrastructure it just drives increases in large scale urbanisation as in the UK in the 18th and 19th century with huge localisation of poverty, huge pollution problems-remember I have been to Beijing, leading to further health problems and inequalities. In fact there is a great argument for solar power is most of sub Saharan Africa as can provide power at village and town level without the need for a grid system. That said Ethiopia is engaged in the world's largest hydro-electric project. Furthermore this can support sustainable food production-seen this in Colombia where solar arrays between chicken sheds powers the farm) No consideration of additional damage from mining and oil extraction-check (as Cat said you have to mine coal) No consideration of off-shore wind energy or use of 'dead' space like along motorway embankments -check (plenty of off shore in Liverpool bay which is a nice sight on the school run, turbines providing local power along motorways-a drive down the M1 will show you this). No consideration of technological advances in renewables- check We all see through you. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

About a quarter of UK electricity is from wind-gas is still the largest single source. Offshore works well as there is usually at least some wind. Solar is more hit and miss, but can be easily included in any new build to reduce the need for other sources, though we are not sunny enough to use as a main source. We should also be exploring more tidal and wave energy-the Swansea Barrage would have been a big platform for developing this.

I was taking a break from all this building work here and went for a bike ride along the Prom from New Brighton to West Kirby. Safe to ay the wind that was blowing was pretty impressive,o much so I buggered off straight back home at the bottom of Grange Road. Lots of new properties getting built in Caldy n'est-ce pas. Loads. And bloody expensive. Cause chaos between building traffic and the school traffic. Three new houses by me- built on the profile of one bungalow/cannabis farm. Look nice but were originally on for 420k which is bonkers when 60s detached like mine are 250k. Had to reduce them 50k to sell. New houses all around here and down in Ledsham/Sutton way.

What a load of bull, first of all CO2 is not "pollution" or dirty, it is the breath of life, which is why the Earth has been greening for the last 25 years. Bejing was polluted by 60 year old design Coal power stations and people still burning it. Which is why China is replacing the stations with new clean designs. Tell it the LMIC that they shouldn't take advantage of Coal & Gas, they are the ones installing it. 500 coal plants being built or planned is the reality. Hydro is good if you have the terrain, water and do not have "greens" stopping it being built. I also agree that where the sun shines all the time that Solar makes some sense, but not at our latitude. You totally ignore all the rare earth "mining" by children and the massive pollution in China from so called green technology. Ah Ah, the myth of offshore wind energy, the combined on shore and offshore wind production was less than 2Gb from 23Gb installed every day for a week between the 12th of May and the 19th of May. You forget that we do not have to accept the bull coming out of you and the green industry, we can see it for ourselves at a couple of websites. There are no real technological advances in renewables. Perhaps you would like to list them and how much improvement they made, seeing as 2Gb from 23Gb of wind and 2Gb-6Gb for 2 hours a day from 13.5Gb installed Solar doesn't say much for your "improvements". I don't suppose that you bothered to read what real experts have to say on the matter in those 2 links I provided. Both of them were brainwashed "believers" just like you, but they did their research.

Yes let's have even more Intermittent energy to destabalise the grid and cost us even more money. It must be worth it, even if the it kills old people who won't be able to afford to heat their homes, after all you are "saving the world" aren't you. I have stated in the past that I abhor the Chinese, so try again, you have nothing factual to say so resort to ad homs as you always do. The Chinese unlike you are are practical and determined for world domination. Crippling our energy and industry while increasing their own is how they are doing it. | The end of gas? on 14:57 - May 19 by BarrySwan | And I worked with gas for over 40 years on a daily basis. It's safe enough when used in properly maintained and installed appliances. A major problem is the large number of cowboys and incompetent and negligent people who install, service and repair such appliances exacerbated by those who are quite happy for unqualified 'bloke down the pub' to work on gas in their houses. There will of course be occasional unfortunate and deadly accidents which will occur just as there is with any other combustible fuel use. The majority of these after investigation in the gas industry tend to be linked with faults in the installation of appliances, pipework and poor record of servicing however there will undoubtably be the occasional split mains or other unforeseen reason for an incident which sometimes cause a tragic loss of life. Can you provide anything other than direct personal insults, emotion and opinion based on what you have seen in the past? Or are you trying to get yourself banned so that you don't have to answer the hard questions involving the actual science and real world data, which I have been providing throughout this post. I have quoted experts, provided data and you have provided nothing but generalities which in no way explain how you get electricity from renewables when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine now. Increase it all by 1000% and you still only have 20Gb of the the required 30Gb-40Gb of demand.

Coal was developed by private individuals over a century ago, as Oil was. Nuclear by the Government as Weapons research as you should know. The money wasted on Wind and Solar is in no way R & D as you must know that it is not only not providing dispatchable electricity it is also going to need replacing in 20 years. Whereas conventional generation has lifetimes 3 times longer. Offshore wind will be lucky to last even 20 years, it suffers more stress more blade erosion, more cable problems and is more difficult and expensive to build and maintain. It is also more dangerous to maintain as well. No one knows what the subsonics it generates are doing sea mammals either. I agree about Fusion "it will be here in 10 years" has been spoken for the last 40 years. It would be the energy of the future if they could actually get it to work. Sorry I don't know who you are talking about trusting, benefiting or are right?

I have seen and recently . Not read some dodgy website. Not me insulting posters calling them liars. How often is there not one of wind, tide, waves or sun. Quick to poo-poo storage and other tech but happy to accept ‘clean coal’ tech and complete pseudoscience. Whilst being free of fossil fuel is still very aspirational, why not aspire? And finally are you betting the farm on unfettered supply of gas and coal or complete reliance on nuclear weapons which always has risk, especially around waste? We all see through you

Well if you had seen recently you would that Beijing's air polution has been dramatically improved. Here are is a typical headline "Beijing’s air quality improvements are a model for other cities" When posters do not tell the truth about what I say, or my position, which I have made clear and is in black & white what do you call those people? When posters keep repeating something which I show by data to be categorically wrong what do you call those people? What do you fail to understand that "one of wind, tide or sun" is totally inadequate to supply our needs now let alone when heating and cars are electrified. Waves do not count as no one has a good wave system working, which you should know. I demonstrated with the necessary calculations why storage does not work, if you cannot understand the simple maths that is your problem not mine. Please explain what complete Electrical generation pseudoscience I accept. Aspiring does not a MegaWatt make, you can aspire as much as you like, but it is worthless to people and industry. Gas & Coal is supplying our needs at the moment and for the foreseeable future. As to nuclear weapons, I do not rely on them at all. Do you know what SMRs use for fuel? Old spent Nuclear waste, problem solved. Like I said you have nothing for answers because you do not have the understanding or the Science and the Engineering background to do so. So you blythely accept the propaganda put out by the green industry, without any concept of the cost, reliability, longevity, pollution and destabalisation involved. Which is also not my problem, but yours as I have tried to explain it to you.
