Liam Walsh - His shelf life came to an end ‘Nigel Pearson’ on 12:09 - Jul 11 by jasper_T
People getting riled up by the headline. The comments overall are far from "a personal attack". He's let a player go and was asked to justify the decision, what's he supposed to say?
A lot still to prove at Championship level, even if he stays fit. 26/46 games in League One the best he's managed. We know Cooper likes intensity in training and doesn't rotate his team unless he has to. If he needs wrapping in cotton wool might find himself out in the cold, as he has with managers in the past.
Just looking over these Walsh threads and it’s very strange, Jasper, that you seem to have it out for the kid before he’s even kicked a ball for us. It’s one thing to tell it like it is, but your posts on Walsh are wildly inaccurate and unnecessarily negative. Especially for such a talented young player signed on a free and reportedly on about half the wages Byers was.
You say 26/46 games in League One is the “best he’s managed” yet the season was curtailed early, after 37 games, due to Covid and Walsh didn’t get loaned to Coventry until the 7th game of the season in the first place. Once he joined he immediately went into the XI, such is his quality, where he remained the entirety of their campaign, such was his level of performance.
He played in 26 of 28 possible games in the league, started all but 2 of those and played the full 90 minutes in 23 of those. He played a further 9 games in the cups, once with Bristol, going the full 90 min in 7 of those. In total he played 35 times, 33 of them starts, and played the full 90 min in 30 of those. I don’t think he needs “wrapping in cotton wool”, he needs quality physios and gametime.
He was a unanimous choice amongst every League One team of the season, was on the shortlist for player of the year and was the top-rated midfielder across the entire division according to the data. Most importantly, Coventry won the league and he was the biggest reason why, the driving engine, playmaker and creator-in-chief on a title-winning team. All at 21 years old. We were very fortunate to be able to sign him and I am hoping and expecting big things from Walsh, he’s a class above any midfielder we’ve had for a long time. True total footballer.
Exactly the dynamic, versatile Swiss Army Knife No 6, 8, 10 we need to return to the Swansea Way. Martin’s aim will now be to bring out the best in him, as he knows Walsh and his game very well. There will be some growing pains, given Martin’s late arrival and Walsh’s need for match fitness, but this is going to be an exciting season. Get with it.

If we can keep this boy fit he will show some our fans what a real creative midfielder is all about. We’ve craved this kind of player for a few years now.
Thanks Rock - your like a realistic , non Cooper pining Andy Mole. Great to have you on board, appreciate your posts ðŸ‘

Certainly some quality long balls there.
Have to temper it slightly, as that’s a seasons worth of highlights. 30 great passes in a reel can make it look a lot more consistent than it actually is.
Team of the year though so he must have impressed.
Passes like that are made by the run as much as the quarterback. Can see Roberts and Bidwell getting on the end of a few of those as we switch play. Laird too if he’s the type who bombs on. Lowe could really benefit if the opposition are defending high enough.

Fabulous analysis copy pasted on Walsh, and highly encouraging for our ever-growing midfield riches. Yet no mention of our local talent who are equally, and possibly more exciting prospects.
Dan Williams continues to massively impress (Martin likes him too) and could steal a march on some of the newbies. Ben Lloyd also. Wold love to see that pan out.
Seems there's a growing myth there's no talent in Swansea. A myth fed by non-locals.

I don’t think anyone has told you that Andy. You’ve just misunderstood what you’ve read again.
There is talent in Swansea and if they are good enough, they will get their chance in the first team. The club has judged that incredibly well over the last 15 years or so.
Let’s hope Dan Williams and Ben Lloyd follow local boys Connor Roberts and Joe Rodon into the first team.

Bueno, Andrew. I know you’re just fishing for a response here, rather desperately, but I’ll bite.
I’m certainly not short of words or analysis, as I’ll demonstrate. All my own, although sometimes I highlight a relevant article, which I’ll cite in the post, but it seems that gets a bit confusing for you. Gladly credit others’ work where due, there are a lot of great writers working in football, like Keith, and they deserve all the recognition they can get. It’s a tough gig. More than a hint of jealousy in your tone, though, bizarre as I’ve honestly never noticed your posts. I’d suggest getting a Wyscout account if you want to improve your football “analysis”, it would work wonders for you.
As for Dan Williams, he was excellent against Reading. Tidy on the ball, good with both feet, kept things simple and moved it on after one or two touches always looking for the open man, positioned himself well in possession finding the little pockets of space between the lines, not afraid to do some dirty work diving into tackles to win the ball and maintain possession, never quit running, pressing the opposition and kept his head on a swivel scanning the area around him.
One thing that really stood out to me was his ability to open his body up quickly when receiving the ball, which enabled him to take it on the half turn while simultaneously attuned to what’s around him, then move the ball on quickly and accurately. He’s also got really good touch, even did a marvelous Cruyff turn at one point that left his marker chasing shadows. Very impressive debut, don’t think anyone anticipated that, definitely don’t recall anyone banging the drum about him being the next Joe Allen before the game, including yourself. Funny that. And yes, I watched the game. Did you?
I would love it if Williams could be our midfield lynchpin for the next decade, always get behind the local boys that have the ability and make the team better. Unfortunately, the facts are not many have, and that’s just reality. He definitely showed it against Reading, but he’s got to get some games under his belt. One match doesn’t make a career, and he’d be the first to tell you that. Good audition for a prospective loan club, though. Facts are at 20 he needs consistent games and he’s not going to get that with us this season. He got his chance because of a depleted midfield for various reasons, but we’ll be at full strength soon with Walsh, Downes and Smith returning.
If it was my call I’d line up a quality loan to League One or Two like we did with Connor, Brandon Cooper, etc. give him his chance to shine and then bring him back a better, more confident and mature player capable of competing with the players above next season. As for Lloyd, he looks a talent, for sure, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him. But he’s 16, and Tate said it best on that subject. He’s one for the future, let him be until he’s ready.
That’s my take, now let’s have yours. Things you like about Williams? Lloyd? What’s your masterplan for their development? From your post, I suppose you’d have them starting together every week, no?

Absolutely, Brynmill, something we’ve been missing for years and honestly can’t believe we managed to get him on a free.
Walsh has definitely had a few injury issues over his career, but almost exclusively at Bristol City, where several players have let it be known they were not happy with the treatment they received. They’ve had quite a time with injuries at the club and it’s not a coincidence. Our physios are superb and I’m confident they will be able to keep him healthy this season once he gets his match fitness up. Out with a hamstring right now after he took a nasty foul against Southampton, but that happens with players as dynamic as Walsh, who can go from zero to sixty in an instant.
Walsh absolutely ran the show at Coventry and Everton’s youth teams, though, and I expect him to do the same with us when he gets himself back matchfit. He’s got it all for a midfielder, someone who can dominate a game in the centre almost singlehandedly. No offence to Grimes, who I like, but we haven’t had Walsh’s class for awhile and his presence will accelerate our entire squad’s transition to Martin’s system.

Yeah, 247, highlights can be misleading in that way a lot of times but with Walsh he’s the real deal.
He’s an excellent footballer, as Martin said recently, and the potential he has within his system is immense. Walsh as the quarterback and playmaker with Downes as the classy pitbull making late runs into the box is something I hope we see a lot of this season. They could be the modernised and updated version of Britton and Allen for our club, and with time could lead us to promotion.
Keep them both fit and firing, with Piröe’s quality up top, pace and legs out wide with Laird and Roberts, and possibly bring in a No 10 like O’Hare, and our attack becomes one of the most dangerous in the division. All of them are skilled, intelligent footballers, and extremely diligent tracking back and work their cojones off off the ball. Lowe would make for an interesting combination up top, but his touch and workrate has got to improve to get into the XI.
I personally would rather us bring in O’Hare if we could find a suitor for Lowe, as his 14 goals last season are going to be difficult to replicate and his value will only decrease. If not, I believe he can improve his game but I’d rather see our young strikers given a chance up top and he somewhat blocks that at the moment. Telling, though, that Whittaker was brought on for Cullen and not Lowe. Whatever happens, though, I have faith in Scott and Martin. Brighter days ahead.
