| Byers going on 10:29 - Aug 5 by Dr_Parnassus | I’m going to try to make a fantasy XI of the players Cooper “should” have played. It will make for shocking reading, featuring the likes of Arriola, Byers, Whittaker, Dhanda, Declan John and Gyorkeres. Sounds formidable… |
The defence of Cooper is honourable but only for historical purposes. He was never going to finish the job. The main thing about Cooper out side all other aspects is that he quit. When faced with adversity he walked away.

Interesting point of view. It makes me think about previous owners who, when faced with adversity, quit and walked away! I was never a Byers fan, I always preferred Fulton. It's a shame to split him from Grimes as with a decent attcking midfielder I though we had a fairly good midfield, if used properly. Time will tell but it looks like our new boss is going to be going onto the front foot far more often, attack being the best form of defence. Lets hope he can bring in the 3/4 players we need to be challengers. Squad depth could still be a concern but if he can get us playing well enough and far enough up the table, maube the owners will take a small gamble in January? I doubt it but I guess it's possible.

Strength in depth will show when we play Reading, unless he hammers his main players.

| Byers going on 00:56 - Aug 5 by Dr_Parnassus | Well if he didn’t see it… why did he not play him at all last year? Think now please. |
Well the fact that Byers was unavailable to be picked up to January due to injury might have played a small part in it. Also, Byers was barely selected when he went out on loan to Portsmouth. They seemingly took weeks to find out he wasn't much cop. Something that took Cooper over a year.

He had a whole second half of the season to be picked and wasn’t. Not once. It took Potter a year and he seemingly still didn’t realise he was good enough. Better late than not at all. Hence why we improved under Cooper no end and ended in the play offs… twice.

| Byers going on 13:42 - Aug 5 with 888 views | jack247 | I don’t think Byers is a massive loss to be honest, but with Grimes potentially gone, Fulton suspended and Walsh getting over a knock, what’s our midfield going to look like on Saturday? Would have been nice to hold on to him until later in the window. | | | |

He wasn't available to be picked. He was out on loan. Better deciding within weeks that he wasn't good enough like Portsmouth did rather than take over a year to do so like both prior managers have done.

That’s my point entirely. He was shipped off, not in the plans. He was of some use in rotation, but he never threatened to be a regular starter under Cooper, it couldn’t have been far off 50:50 starts and subs. He was seen as a squad player. Potter pretty much made all his appearances starts. He was used correctly by Cooper as a supplement to the midfield. Potter used him as a starter and as posted above looked like he would continue that role… thankfully we were spared it by Brighton. Edit - the stats 95% of Byers appearances under Potter were starts. 63% of Byers appearances were starts under Cooper. So in terms of being “good enough”. Cooper seemed to know right away he was only good enough to be a squad player, still is probably, but he’s too expensive to be one. Potter seemed to want him as one of his main midfielders, which he was never good enough for. [Post edited 5 Aug 2021 15:31]

Cooper picked Byers more times than Potter did. That is a fact.

Agree but if the club want him off the books, the risk of keeping him for a few games is either Wednesday turn their interest elsewhere or he picks up an injury. Both of which result in a player management don’t want. Last year of contract leaves players in a strong position if other clubs are interested in them. It will be interesting to see if Conor signs a new contract. If not the club have little option but to look to move him on this window if possible or January if not. This window the fee is potentially more than January. Otherwise he goes at the end of the season for a free and the club can’t afford to let that happen.

Doesn’t matter. He wasn’t a regular starter for Cooper, he was used correctly as a squad player. Under Potter he was a starter.

| Byers going on 23:27 - Aug 9 with 549 views | Rock | Potter is a fantastic manager, coach, communicator and motivator. He has worked wonders on many players of various levels of quality and diverse skillsets, Byers included. He is in the PL, receiving plaudits from Guardiola, Klopp, Ancelotti, pretty much every manager of repute, specifically for the way his teams play football and the considerable amount of top-notch work that goes into that. We were lucky to have him for one season and he was very quickly headhunted by the powers that be above us. That will likely happen at some point in the near future with Brighton, as well, he is destined to assume the reins at a big club if he chooses to do so. Cooper is... not that. I’ve happily moved on from the guy pretty quickly and the club has too. Quite a while ago, in fact. Enough said. As for Byers, he flatters to deceive. He can play a bit of football if in the right structure and with superior players around, which was the case under Potter. Let him take a few touches with little pressure and he can appear a useful footballer at times. Anything else at all and it becomes apparent he is going to struggle mightily. Very similar to Tom Carroll in that regard. Both were little more than bit part players under Potter, Carroll certainly moreso than Byers because of his struggles with injury. Grimes was the only lock for the XI, Fulton started more games and played 300 more minutes, Celina was drafted into midfield at times and had Fer been remotely healthy he would’ve been a starter most weeks. Given the circumstances, Potter was forced to be creative with his lineups and formations, something he is very skilled at. Byers was very fortunate to be on hand at the time, and Potter’s tactics made him look much better than he has ever appeared before or after. He was the beneficiary of an excellent manager who likes to play possession football and knows how to setup a team to hide his players’ weaknesses and highlight their strengths. Other players of ours have mentioned how much of a moaner he is on the pitch, and he has always struck me as someone who believes he is much better than he actually is. Those guys are not much fun to play with. With that said, fact is he has been getting paid handsomely to contribute very little. Now’s the time to prove himself, League One looks his level and he said it felt “unbelievable” to be at a “massive” club like Wednesday. Go on George, show ‘em what you got. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. | | | |
