Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin 18:57 - Aug 20 with 8006 viewsmagicdaps10

Cabango and Downes out with covid along with Bennett and Naughton.

Having a challenging time early on and atleast deserves our support and backing.

Any idiots who see it as an opportunity to have a dig can do one in my eyes.

Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 20:43 - Aug 22 by magicdaps10

We do but people needed to realise that we move on despite a poor performance and result on Tuesday night and not proclaim that Martin isn't for them or he could be gone by September!

The whole picture needed to be taken in on Tuesday night and that result Friday proves that we are not a lost cause and once Martin impliments his style even more and the arrival of players in the next week, we have a season we can start building for the future of the Swansea way once more.
Once we get a settled back 3, once they become embedded in passing and being comfortable with ball then things will become solid at the back, midfielders being more proactive and moving the ball, attackers given a sense of freedom and adventure with quick passing.... It won't happen over night and we need to be patient with it.

They did.I did.We had doubts.Less now.

As I say,we comment as we see things of the present-or we should.

Now, time to QUIT squabbling. That includes you and me.

I don't know, maybe you should have the balls to name these people who were having digs to avoid any confusion? I'm not really concerned by that, I don't know what you class as a dig.

Yes you erroneously pointed that out because Martin himself and many others besides noticed that we deviated away from Martin's style. Which I and others pointed out to you and you went into full defensive mode.

Why however you felt the need to go down that route on a thread where I assume the original post was regarding the injury crisis I don't know.

As I said, people were questioning Martin on Tuesday night!
Not rocket science!

Those same fans were not taking the whole picture in with injuries etc. As I said, these people who had a go hopefully wake up a bit and as i pointed out that we can play Martin's style, the Swansea way will be back but patience is required.

Can't put it any clear than that Chief!

Yea that's fine, no manager should have a blind pass, this is a football forum, people should be allowed to question. Although I'd class questioning as being different to having a dig. But that's by the by.

Well that's not entirely true because the whole picture of injuries& covid only came to light later in the week. Plus one of the reasons people like me were suggesting being more pragmatic was because of things like Martin's inability to play the players he wanted (due to not being signed yet/up to speed/injured).

Yes you pointed that out erroneously. You keep ignoring this key point - Martin himself stated the team went against his own game plan. So as of yet there isn't any evidence that we can play and win the Martin way, because the only game we've won in the league, we deviated from the Martin style.

Evidence? We won convincingly against Reading 3-0 in the Cup, and we have gotten a draw against a team in the PL last season and a win away against a decent footballing side. We have played all of four matches, Chief, and gotten beaten by two of the best teams in the division. And Martin has been dealing with a lot of players out, particularly key players within his system, while taking over the team a few days before the season started and with no pre-season. Not sure what you’re expecting for “evidence” exactly, honestly.

Martin’s gameplan is what led to us taking the lead, counter-pressing Bristol and having swarms of our players around the ball as Bristol won possession. Watch the goal and take a look at how many of our players were in their half, never would’ve happened under Cooper. That is straight from the training ground and specifically something Martin has instructed them to do when the ball is advanced into the opposition half. Cullen worked hard and put pressure on their defence, Piröe got the loose ball and Paterson made a run on the outside that took defenders and attention with him. Both of Piröe’s shots were excellent, and the movement around him was straight from Martin’s system.

Again, it was an away match with a makeshift backline and Bristol are a team that likes to play football. They want to knock it around themselves, and there’s only one ball. Taking that into consideration the only thing the players did that strayed from Martin’s gameplan was to clear the ball a bit more and lose possession in the second half. This is after us taking our first lead of the brief season, and the players were noticeably tense and invited more pressure onto us than playing short passes would have.

Martin’s gameplan is not to lose the game, it is to control possession a bit more and make the opposition players exert more energy chasing the ball around. This is a key component of his tactics and this becomes far more effective in the second half, and allows us to take advantage when we combine that with pressing. Bristol were there for the taking, and another goal was surely in the off had we continued to apply pressure to them in and out of possession. That is what Martin was a bit upset about, the players did not play to their own gameplan the whole match as is being suggested.

And, again, the clear-it-away-at-all-costs gameplan of Cooper’s would not have led to our goal in the first place. Many a goalless draw or loss our previous manager, not something that is sustainable or will lead to much success down the line, as we have seen. The players get frustrated with this and tune it out eventually, as Grimes is reported to have done by looking to move on quickly with him still at the helm. He is not alone in that thinking, I can promise you that. Then we have become Cardiff in a year or two, and I definitely don’t want to see that.

Rocky.
I like what I see of Downes but Walsh really does seem to be a sicknote and it's impossible to speculate as to what he could do.

He could spend most of the season injured.Im no Grimes fan but his fitness record is outstanding.

I worried about Martin until the Brizzle game made me feel better

Preston will be a good gauge of where we are with him

At least we rid ourselves of Cooper,an abject failure in my eyes.

All about opinions

You post well Sir

Cheers, HungLow.

Walsh has had a difficult time with injuries, particularly since Covid emerged, but I put that down more to Bristol’s medical team than anything. When he’s fit, the kid has class and quality that is up there with the best midfielders in the division, easily.

A unique footballer in many ways, and someone we wouldn’t have been able to bring in on a free unless he had a flaw or two. We have phenomenal physios and my expectation is they will sort it out and put him on the right track.

Martin is an excellent young manager who will make mistakes, but he has the humility and awareness to learn from them and improve. His tactics and system are impressive for someone so young, and I have faith in him to take us places.

You are right about Cooper, less said about him is better in my book. Brighter days ahead with Martin at the helm.

Evidence of what? Reading's youth team. Blackburn you think are one of the divisions best teams? They were decimated by injuries too. I'm all for giving credit where it's due but let's be realistic and not distort facts. Where have you picked up the evidence quotes from?

Again, you're making the mistake of thinking I want us to be exactly like we were under Cooper. I've never stated that. But I'm glad we're being more expansive in attack. It was one the areas we didn't quite get right under Cooper. As I've said I liked the blend on Friday - aspects of Martinball alongside less risks at the back and an all round more streetwise approach.

No one is suggesting the players did it the whole game, I've certainly never said they did. But I'm glad they did second half. They were visibly tired.

And again, I've never advocated employing a full Cooper style again. I stated after we lost the play off, I could live with it if it meant promotion.

Next paragraph correct - that's a fair overview and is a deviation from Martin's core style, as stated by Martin himself.

Struggling to see your Grimes point. He's on the verge of leaving now isn't he? And Cooper's no longer here?

This is what you said -

“So as of yet there isn't any evidence that we can play and win the Martin way, because the only game we've won in the league, we deviated from the Martin style.”

My response to that is above, not going to repeat myself. Again, moving on, Chief, I have more to do. I have stated my points and you have stated yours. The facts are you have criticised Martin and the club all summer and the beginning of the season, while praising or defending our previous manager at every turn.

That guy left us high and dry, which I’m happy he did in hindsight because we were able to bring in Martin. Promotion under Cooper was never going to happen, his tactics are easily found out against top clubs, as shown in back-to-back playoffs. It might do okay over a season in the Championship, but it’s never going to work against the best teams, and that will not change. He will find that out if and when he gets his next job.

As for Grimes, he became unsettled more than anything by Cooper’s tactics and wanted out. He is not the only player who would have been thinking that. Players want to win, but they want to play good football too. Martin will bring that with time and patience, and I am fully behind him. It seems you are, as well, finally and I hope that continues.

Sorry Adam not seen this but if you look at the screenshot and the sub categories
HOME-TACTICAL THEORY-PLAYING SYSTEM.

As I said tactics and quite clearly from that screenshot that systems fall under tactics, if you used the word tactics then I would have understood exactly where you were coming from.... Its just proper football phrase.

Apology accepted, but you don’t need to apologise that you got it wrong, it’s becoming a theme.

A system, is a set of tactics. Our system against Bristol was clearly pretty far removed from previous.

Happy to help.

I'm just looking at the facts. We won while playing a more pragmatic style than we have previously. We were also looking quite tired so I don't like the thought of us holding onto the ball too much around our own box.

Yes indeed.

Yes same here, there was no deviation from the thread alluding to covids and injures until you then for some reason posted something about winning playing Martin's style. You are the one who changed the narrative.

Correct.

People backed Martin to change the system to a more pragmatic one. He did that with the help of our players, whether they did it by themselves or under instruction seems to be a bit of a talking point. I’ll credit Martin with the change as I think it’s a bit early for a player mutiny.

But the bottom line is they were correct to back the club to change something that wasn’t working. And those telling us we could only play one way and that Martin was limited to plan A only, were wrong.

I think it’s those people that are now trying to deflect their lack of faith onto others. Although some are just forum trolls though, clearly.

Ok thank you. Well as I say the only league game we've won this season we blended Martin's tactics with a more pragmatic style even according to Martin himself, so technically I'm not wrong.. the summer has been a mess - the club (Winter) deserved criticism for the way the management role was handled. Well the manager did get to 4th. But as I say, he's gone now &it was you who seem to be bringing him up constantly, not me.

Promotion was 1 game away under Cooper. Brentford were by far the better team, but anything can happen in a 1 off game..

Where are you getting this from about Grimes then? Guessing? As I said earlier which you ignored - Grimes is very much still on the brink of leaving now and Cooper hasn't been at the club for over a month.

But I'm happy to move on from Cooper. Not sure why you put so much emphasis on him in your posts, he's really not that relevant currently.

I've never not been behind Martin, but as I've said blind faith isn't my thing.

This thread is exactly what happens when people have hissy fits after three games. Only a vocal minority to be fair.

New manager, new system, a fair few changes to the starting line up. We’re going to see some great football, we’re going to see us surrendering a decent position and going backwards or sideways. We’re going to score some great goals, we’re going to concede some howlers.

Games won’t be as predictable as they were under Cooper, I can see this season being more of a rollercoaster. Hopefully people will tire of OTT reactionary posts after every game.

Ironically, I think you said just as much as the people who he is referring to here in the OP.

Not sure I have seen any hissy fits though, he is talking about the people who suggested we change the system temporarily to a more sensible approach, due to us not having the right players to play across the back constantly.

I am yet to see anyone slate the manager, quite the opposite. I have seen them make the obvious point that the system should change until we get the personnel in and back the managers adaptability to be able to do it, despite what we were told about him only having a plan A.

I think you agreed at the time, which of course you were correct to do as it transpires after the manager successfully did just that in the last match.

This thread is one to look for reactions from the people who were ultimately proved correct, by pretending their suggestion was accompanied with comments that they disliked the manager or something along those lines. Which is clearly false, isn't it.

Am I being unfair?

Said as much in what way? My general opinion has been that it’s going to take time and personnel changes to successfully imbed a drastically different way of playing. I’ve said there will be ups and downs and that a rough start to the season wouldn’t surprise me. I do think we’ll get better as the season progresses. I don’t think beating Bristol City is enough to evidence that.

There have been hissy fits and very reactionary posts. The Stoke match day thread has a couple. Some opinions changed dramatically after the Bristol City game, which we could have been out of before Pirloes goal if they were a bit more clinical.

As far as I can tell, it’s going to be a topsy turvy season. We will have open, entertaining games like that that which we win and lose narrowly. We will batter some teams, we will take a couple of hammerings. We will definitely concede goals due to being sloppy in possession at the back.

I’m not sticking up for the OP. As I said, we could easily have lost Friday. If the same thing happens at Preston, people will be hailing Martin as our saviour. That will be just as silly as hammering him after 3 games.

Final point. I don’t really buy it when people plough into the tactics, the lineup, which subs are brought on and when, but then caveat it with ‘I’m not having a go at Martin though’.

Edit - I don’t know if the OP was meant as a dig at you, or if it wasn’t and you interpreted it that way. Personally, I’m not referring to the balanced posts that point out things like certain players aren’t suited to playing in a certain way. I agree with that. More the ‘Martin wtf was that’ and ‘we’ll be lucky to stay up’ type posts.

Well you said the squad wasn't technically good enough in key areas and agreed with the suggestion (or at least said it made sense) that we needed to be more direct and adopt a more sensible game plan until we get those players in. Didn't you?

That is what the OP is referring to, same as his other attention seeking thread down the page where he singled out myself, Chief and others for those views and claiming we were ''wrong'', which of course would include you too.

I think those who were on the same page (the correct page as it turns out) were pro active in their support for Martin and went out of their way to praise him, stating they hope he stays for a long time, back him to be adaptable etc etc

Isn't critiquing the tactics and approach something done after every game? Why do you not buy that they aren't having a go at the manager? Were you having a go at the manager when you said that our squad wasn't able to play this way, or were you just making a common sense observation?

You also said ''I haven’t agreed with any of his team selections so far'', I am sure you are perfectly happy for him to be our manager though. Right?

This is the issue, people are taking observations (ones that turn out to be correct) and insisting they are criticisms of the manager without any proof of criticism whatsoever. In fact, the opposite.

I think we’re ignoring a third group here, the reactionaries. I assumed they were the people the OP was aimed at. Just look at the Sheffield match day thread. I’m sure the Blackburn one has similar posts. If I wanted to look back through threads between then and Friday, I’m sure I’d find more.

I haven’t agreed with his team selections. I’d have been starting Piroe (assume I said that before Friday?). Like the conversation we had a few weeks ago though, I’m sure I followed that up with something along the lines of having faith in him as we are only a couple of weeks into the season. One line in isolation can often look very misleading when the context of the post is stripped away.

‘We got a chance against Plymouth’, ‘This is truly worrying and I’m afraid Russ ain’t for me, right now anyway’ ‘at this rate Martin will be gone by Christmas’ ‘we are being taken for fools by the owners, chairman and now manager’. Are all comments on one thread. I haven’t looked back at the ‘is the tide turning against Martin already’ thread, but seeing as it’s 5 pages long, I’d imagine it contains s similar.

Appreciate the irony of doing that after my previous paragraph, but none were caveated in any way. Tunes changed a bit after the Bristol City game. I assumed that type of comment was what the OP was referring to.

Edit - and I’m editing this post as well just to reinforce a point I made earlier, if we beat Preston in an error strewn, heart in the mouth, end to end exciting game, people will gloss over the mistakes and think we’re the nuts. That will be just as reactionary and silly as writing us off by mid August.
