| Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 14:08 - Aug 21 by magicdaps10 | What was the system change from Tuesday to yesterday then? I reiterate the system change. |
Didn't you watch it? It was obvious. We decided to not spend as much time tapping at around the back and took the easy escape when they pressed as opposed to being belligerent to the short pass. We were more direct, feeding balls to Piroe rather than looking to play back due to Cullens lack of strength in that area. We intentionally sacrificed possession and kept a higher line to keep them back rather than being deep in our own half and insisting we have the ball and making passes along the back. As a result we saw our lowest passes completed and lowest possession stats of the season. 72% possession and 571 passes - Blackburn 63% possession and 588 passes - Sheff Utd 64% possession and 665 passes - Stoke 54% possession and 468 passes - Yesterday Happy to be of service. Now why was Martin, the fans and the players wrong to advocate that change then? We are all delighted with it. Why aren't you and instead bizarrely claiming we are all wrong? | Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 14:33 - Aug 21 with 810 views | Dr_Parnassus | Last two league matches:- Notice our possession, spread wide across our defensive line. The exact area Stoke dispossessed us twice to score in the last game. It’s almost identical. …….. Now note the change. It’s no longer pointless possession spread across the back, it’s focussed but limited possession at the back and far more even in distribution.

| Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 14:48 - Aug 21 with 793 views | Dr_Parnassus | We can also look at the passing philosophy over our recent games. vs Sheff Utd - 52 Long balls out of 588 total passes, which was 9.3% of total passes vs Stoke City - 52 Long balls out of 665 total passes, which was 7.8% of total passes vs Bristol City - 66 Long balls out of 471 total passes, which was 14% of total passes. Essentially double the last game, due to us not insisting we don't clear our lines. We had by far our least passes of the season in the last match and by far the most long balls. The short passing at all costs system was clearly eased off in the correct areas... which is of course what was being called for. [Post edited 21 Aug 2021 14:52]

Got a lot of time on your hands to put that up but I suppose when you have been logged onto this site for nearly 12 hours then you would have the time. Obviously getting things off the site to suit your agenda is water off a ducks back. Live your best life Adam 👠

| Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 19:28 - Aug 22 with 625 views | Rock | Precisely, Magic Daps. Martin has been dealing with a lot of things out of his control in just a few weeks with us, on top of the difficulty of implementing a new playing style with players he’s never worked with or prepared much for. Add in they’re not fit because of his predecessor’s shoddy running of pre-season as he angled for a move that he inevitably didn’t get. Half the squad has been out at times or completely, including the majority of our best XI when at full strength. Anyone who criticises our manager under these circumstances, especially while cheerleading our former manager that walked out on our club as the going got tough, is not a proper fan or supporter and is naive or ignorant of what a difficult job he has had on his hands. Completely naive of how football and football management works, in general. Martin and his staff have done an excellent job so far and I am confident they will continue to as players return, he has more time on the training ground and the burden lessens as we sign a few new players in key positions. Brighter days ahead. | | | |

| Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 22:55 - Aug 20 by nantywatcher | No way am I writing him off. At the moment however he's someone I'd not want in the team when going into a battle. I'm sure there's a lot more a good management team can get out of him. He did not play - we won. |
Care to explain what makes you think that, Nanty? For me, at the moment, Downes is one of our most talented players, steel and silk footballer in one, and would make my XI now and when we are at full strength, as well. He’s certainly one I’d want next to me in a battle, though, no matter what you think of his footballing ability, the kid doesn’t back down from anyone. At full strength and assuming Grimes gets sold, which is a big assumption at this point the way Fulham are going, my preferred midfield would be Walsh and Downes in a two, with hopefully a new, energetic No 10 (Callum O’Hare) ahead of them. Smith and Fulton, in particular, would be rotated in depending on the matchup, form or if the starters need a rest. But I think Walsh and Downes complement each other to a tee and would prove that with time on the pitch together. The key to the season, for me, is getting Walsh back fit and firing. He’s the playmaker we’ve needed for a while now, he makes everyone around him better and Piröe, especially, would feast on his line-breaking balls behind the backline and over the top.

Rocky. I like what I see of Downes but Walsh really does seem to be a sicknote and it's impossible to speculate as to what he could do. He could spend most of the season injured.Im no Grimes fan but his fitness record is outstanding. I worried about Martin until the Brizzle game made me feel better Preston will be a good gauge of where we are with him At least we rid ourselves of Cooper,an abject failure in my eyes. | Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 23:24 - Aug 20 by Brynmill_Jack | You do know he picked up 30 yellows last season. He’s a beast of a player but he has a lot more to his game. I think he just needs to be the main man. I wouldn’t mind playing him at CDM, Fulton fetching and carrying and Grimes playing in Piroe or bringing the WB’s into the game. |
Agreed, Brynmill, but for me Walsh needs to be the main man and I hope and expect him to be back soon to show us all that. Downes is one of our most talented players but his long passing needs a bit of work, which is something he can certainly improve on given his talent and application. But it is essential to Martin’s system, opening up the defence at the right time, and I think that would be asking a lot of Downes at the moment. His skills are extensive, as I’ve listed before, but I’d like to see him playing more of a roving role, both in defence and attack. His energy, quality on the ball, short passing and runs into the box make him a threat going forward. But he is an elite destroyer, and I’d like to see him racing around breaking up play more than sitting as the screen in front of the defence, as I think his hotheadedness might leave us a bit exposed there at times. My hope and expectation is that Walsh will return soon, slot next to him in the XI and show everyone exactly what kind of a playmaker he is, which would take our game to the next level and highlight some of the best parts of Martin’s system. He needs that versatile player that can play one-twos, line-breaking balls to attackers, switch the play wide to wing-backs and make himself a threat from distance. Walsh can do all of this one touch, in a split-second, and adds the dribbling ability that few can match. He’s the key to the system blossoming into full bloom, in my opinion. Get him back fit and keep him there and our play becomes a different animal. I would be okay with Grimes staying at this point, as he knows the club and is always fit, and he does a good job as the screener. But he can’t run the show like Walsh, doesn’t have his or Downes’ skill on the ball and isn’t the pitbull that Downes and Fulton are. He’s in the last year of his deal and doesn’t seem interested in re-signing, as I think he wants a move and more money than we can offer him. That’s all fine, and I hope we can bring in someone like Callum O’Hare if he gets his move, it would further ratchet up the intensity and quality of our play.

Walsh looks a cracking player but he needs a run to prove he can be injury free... Reminds me a bit of Bodde but injury looks to be a big issue for him. Hoping he plays Tuesday, indicated to me that he has a chance as it stands to be involved.

As I said tactics and quite clearly from that screenshot that systems fall under tactics, if you used the word tactics then I would have understood exactly where you were coming from.... Its just proper football phrase. |
None of this is really relevant though is it? Knit picking over wording definitions to deflect. In one of the earliest posts on the thread you refer to playing Martin's 'style'. And proving how we can do it. Well Martin even said himself the players didn't play to his style. So I don't know why you're still digging here. Numbers arrows whatever dont matter.

So if we played to his style then we might have got another goal or not have invited as much pressure.... I think if we looked after the ball then it would have been smoother sailing. The win was a win with indications in Martin's early tenure that we are starting to look after the ball better, we can get that inbplace more then we can look after the ball better. But I still fail to see what all this has to do with feeling sorry for Martin, even had someone posting shits of heat maps but as you say... I'm just looking at the facts. We won while playing a more pragmatic style than we have previously. We were also looking quite tired so I don't like the thought of us holding onto the ball too much around our own box. Yes indeed. Yes same here, there was no deviation from the thread alluding to covids and injures until you then for some reason posted something about winning playing Martin's style. You are the one who changed the narrative.

Hang on now, people were having a go Tuesday night anfmd they questioned Martins style, I pointed out that it was a wake up call that we can play Martin's style.... You can't ignore that people were having a go as it was all over the Stoke match day thread. Then it became the "show" and I was asked who was having a dig and to grow up..... then is when the post went downhill as usual.

I don't know, maybe you should have the balls to name these people who were having digs to avoid any confusion? I'm not really concerned by that, I don't know what you class as a dig. Yes you erroneously pointed that out because Martin himself and many others besides noticed that we deviated away from Martin's style. Which I and others pointed out to you and you went into full defensive mode. Why however you felt the need to go down that route on a thread where I assume the original post was regarding the injury crisis I don't know.

| Gotta feel sorry for Russell Martin on 20:38 - Aug 22 with 502 views | howenjack | I would like us to see us add a clever quick athletic forward to play alongside Piroe. I think Lowe is better suited from a deeper position. He has the power and athleticism to drive forward with the ball drawing defenders to him . If he can improve on the timing and weight of his passes he can provide the supply to the front players. In short Lowe could be our Jack Grealish ...but he is going to have to get a lot fitter.. We need someone alongside Piroe though - with the right man in we could create havoc a bit like Alan Warboys and Bruce Bannister at the Gas, smash and grab they were known as . Just imagine it ......Piroe to A.N Other Bang 1-0 !!! A.N Other to Piroe ...Bang 2-0 .We could fly up this divsion. | | | |

We do but people needed to realise that we move on despite a poor performance and result on Tuesday night and not proclaim that Martin isn't for them or he could be gone by September! The whole picture needed to be taken in on Tuesday night and that result Friday proves that we are not a lost cause and once Martin impliments his style even more and the arrival of players in the next week, we have a season we can start building for the future of the Swansea way once more. Once we get a settled back 3, once they become embedded in passing and being comfortable with ball then things will become solid at the back, midfielders being more proactive and moving the ball, attackers given a sense of freedom and adventure with quick passing.... It won't happen over night and we need to be patient with it.
