Surely we've gone beyond Smith with the signings this summer.

I think what he does is sometimes a bit undervalued but that’s just my opinion. We seemed a better team with him in the 11 last year. Whether that would be the case this year playing the different style is unknown. Sometimes energy is something that our team badly misses

This is Patches O'Houlihan saying "Take care of your balls, and they'll take care of you."

I struggle to find much value in him. He doesn't look for the ball, doesn't score or create. Way behind Grimes and Fulton in defensive contribution. For me he's one of those players that doesn't make enough obvious mistakes to draw criticism, because he lets his teammates play all the football. Just runs around talking and pointing.

I reckon we’d have got closer to the autos if Cooper not insisted/ was forced to play Hourihane instead of Smith. At least Smith plays with heart despite his alleged limitations

Each time I go to Bedd - au........................

I was thinking of Downes as well, what I have seen so far is excellent but IMO he has been trying not to get in Grimes way. Just a little too soon to form an firm opinion on Downes as captain, but we are limited with options.

Too young yet IMO. Maybe in future.
Naughton or Ntcham maybe. It may help him fit in.

.
Poll: Who are you voting for this year? I'm sure Grimes will be popular. I've gone Oli

I’m not quite sure what it is that he specifically offered but we just seemed to be a better team last year when he played. That may be down to hourihane being the one who kept him out though

He offered a scurrying, back-foot presence. Somebody to sweep up and clean up.

Absolutely what we don't need. Neither last year nor most especially this year.

We need front-foot go forward to propel off Grimes as our anchor.
Grimes = 1.75 x Smith, in so many ways.

Grimes and Fulton get it. We need dynamism around that duo. A MG-W. A Walsh on steroids. Or a Patterson on steroids++. Certainly not a Downes who crudely, embarrassingly gets in the way and lunges off his feet unnecessarily, fouling, committing yellows at best.

Smith has RM fighting his corner. A big test of RM's maturity........
