Deal expiring in 2022 Matt Grimes Jake Bidwell Kyle Naughton Yan Dhanda Korey Smith Ben Hamer Dan Williams Josh Gould Cameron Evans Rhys Williams (loan) Ethan Laird (loan) Lincoln McFayden (plus one-year extension option) Jamie Paterson (plus one-year extension option)

| WOL reports on 12:58 - Sep 6 with 2245 views | jackrmee | Williams and the 2 with extra year options should get an offer. Unsure about the rest tbh. I can see them all getting moved on, unless they would be happy with a pay cut. Possibly Naughton would. | |

While the great Grimes does so,let him do so from the bench. Take captaincy from him and give to Downes . He is simply another player who will soon be an ex player

| WOL reports on 17:03 - Sep 6 with 1948 views | Dr_Parnassus | Agree regarding the captaincy. If we are building for the future then why are we giving the armband to someone who is leaving in 8/9 months time and knowingly harming the club by walking away for free in the process. In terms of examples to set to the rest of the players and a drive to wear the jersey, seems a bit strange to keep him as captain. Although saying that, we seem very thin on alternatives. | |

Agreed. As I have said before, put the contract on the table and if he does not sign it within a week remove the armband. We are building for the future, if Grimes does not want to be part of it we move on.

Part of me agrees, another part says tell him staraight that if he performs well enough he's in the team but the moment he has a poor game he's in the U23's. Dress it up as him earning his next contract wherever that may be.

I don't agree with dropping him for spite, just changing the captain if he doesn't commit. Always play the best available, but a captain should set an example on and off the field.

| WOL reports on 22:06 - Sep 6 with 1679 views | jackrmee | Surely if a player is expected to honour his contract, so should the club. I don't think Grimes is a very good captain, but punishing him for not signing an extension is ridiculous. It's up to him at the end of the day, and as he has said, while he is here he will play his best. Not ideal, but relegating him to the u23s is not only silly, but unfair to the lad who has given us years of service. I agree he should not be captain, but who the heck else do we have to give it to right now? Maybe if we wait until he leaves, there may be a new player showing worthiness. | |

He’s never really going to fit this system, tiki taka etc. He really should have gone. You never know though a team pressing for promotion might give us a little something for him at Christmas

It's not spite Whitey;just the fact we need a real captain who can inspire. I think Downes can be that chap.

It is very strange Swansea did not accept Fulham's low ball offer if that is the case. There must have been some indication that he would sign a new deal for reasonable money or they would have sold.

I was thinking of Downes as well, what I have seen so far is excellent but IMO he has been trying not to get in Grimes way. Just a little too soon to form an firm opinion on Downes as captain, but we are limited with options.

If the price is right we could do worse than have an experienced midfield head on the bench.

Or it could have been a really poor offer. Depends how the lowball offer was structured, when the money was to be paid, what the add ons were, if they were realistic or easily got around. We have no idea about that. A totally hypothetical scenario to make the point. Let's just say the offer overall was worth £2.5 million including add ons. A basic £1 million, £500,000 now and £500,000 at the end of the season. An additional £500k if they get promoted and an additional £1 million if Grimes played more than 25 games. Would that rock our boat?

If all goes well that'll be Fulton by next summer. We'll be looking back on this window as having been pretty poor if he and Smith are still worth their place in matchday squads by then. Downes, Walsh and Ntcham brought in to improve us. Dan Williams will hopefully kick on (played 90 for Wales u21s today, 4-0 win over Bulgaria).

That they may, but we'll still need a couple more for squad depth, especially given Grimes' likely departure. There's a whole lot of players in our squad that some people oddly can't wait to see the back of (for some reason Cabango is in there for a lot of them) that I'd quite happily retain. I don't know if somehow due to a combination of mythology and nostalgia they've convinced themselves that the 2011 team contained nothing but Brazil 1970'esque total footballers and nothing else will cut the mustard, but it's a bit weird nonetheless.

The club would not accept this deal for one of two reasons. a) The club will wave goodbye to him in 10 months and use him to the full for this season and write off any transfer fee as a deliberate policy. Selling for less in January does not amke an lot of sense. b) Grimes has indicated he will consider a new offer and sign a new deal.

Is there a sell on to Exeter in place on any Grimes sale. A sell on could really mess with the figures.

If Downes, Ntcham and Walsh live up to the hopes than it's not a case of wanting "1970s total footballers" and damn the rest, Smith will simply be too far from the first 11 to justify an extended contract. Best case (for us) is that he's 6th choice in midfield even after Grimes leaves. Maybe a couple of the new boys don't work out and we need him. But even then we'll have those players contracts to honour. Only so much bloat we can afford if we want to be sustainable.
