ON C4 now.

She gave a press conference for her Chinese fans in Chinese. If she is able to maintain a top 5 ranking for several years her earnings will even dwarf the Williams sisters. She could well become the wealthiest sportswoman ever.

If she can keep winning majors she could easily attain Tiger Woods level of endorsements.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Apparently someone in the endorsement business said earlier that he had not had so much interest in anyone since Lewis Hamilton burst onto the scene.

From a marketers perspective, there's not many boxes she doesn't tick.

Potential pitfalls there as well, but she seems smart and level headed enough to avoid most of those.

Alot of it is not down to facilities, its parents primarily and in some sports the cost involved.

Lots of footballers from less affluent areas.

Lots of golfers, tennis players , cricketers from more affluent areas.

Swimmers parents for example, like knitting or reading a good book while their child practices and competes.

Radacanu is phenomenal. Only 18, brilliant sports person. Talented and focussed. Seems very level headed and talks so well to camera for someone so young. A bright future ahead.

What's left to achieve - Wimbledon next year ? I can see the British press already .

She doesn't seem to feel pressure, hope that doesn't change, although it will probably change as she ages. Just enjoy it.

A read for anyone interested in the size of earnings/endorsements available to sportswomen.

The hype is unreal with this girl, I feel sorry for her in that respect and truly hope her team shield her from it and keep her feet on the ground.

She's an excellent player, she is not anywhere near the level people seem to think she is though.

She will have done extremely well to have any sort of longevity in and around the top 10, I personally think she will be around 10-15 on average.

This year she struggled to get to the later stages of some ITF tournaments (third tier events for those unfamiliar). The problem is, most people watch 3-4 tournaments a year out of 50+ and base their thoughts on those.

She hasn't beaten a single player in the top 10 as of yet, any talk of comparisons with the Williams sisters is just nonsense.

Without taking anything away from her as you can only beat what is in front of you, that had to be one of the kindest runs to a US Open Major in history. Has anyone won one without facing a top 10 player before?

I would have to check, but it would be an extreme rarity.

There are several players well ahead of Emma in terms of potential and current talent.

Coco Gauff for example is even younger (17) and already in the top 25 and is probably most likely to take up the 'Serena' mantle. Andreescu, Swiatek and possibly even Anisimova I put above her and none are past 20 years old, and that's just the extreme youth on the tour without touching those above 20.

A fantastic achievement and one that will go down in history. But if she ever wins another Slam again, I will be pleasantly shocked.

“ Coco Gauff for example is even younger (17) and already in the top 25”

So is Raducanu of course. New ranking will be 23.

In general it’s hard to say whether this is a fluke or whether it’s just such a huge improvement in the few months since she stated playing full time rather than with school. Or whether she’s a player that just will do better in bigger tournaments given she’s now done it twice in the only two she’s played.

Until a few more tournaments have come (assuming she now gets a wild card into Indian Wells for example!!) it will be up in the air. Fernandez of course beat 4 in the top 10 before the final and Raducanu beat her, and, to be honest, looked better than her, albeit the game was closer than the score suggests.

One thing that’s not in doubt - she will have endorsements coming out of her ears.

Indeed, but the bulk of Raducanu's points will have all come from a 2 week period, Gauff's have come from consistent performing. Its a huge difference.

It's not a fluke by any means, but the stars aligned with this one. Covid knocked out some big stars and she got a very favorable run, she absolutely deserved to win. But it's unlikely to be repeated in my opinion.

The Wimbledon run was also overblown. Again a good achievement, but she only won 3 games. One against someone ranked outside the top 100 and another two in and around number 40, one of which was a clay courter in Vondrouseva who doesn't possess a serve - which is a death knell on grass.

If we take it that she is a top 25 player that had not acquired the points at the time to be considered one, the Wimbledon run doesn't look that great. All players she beat will be ranked below her at this current time.

Before the match I said Fernandez will hate to play Raducanu, because Fernandez relies on putting the ball in awkward positions and making players hit shots they aren't comfortable in doing. Much of the top 10 is made up of power players who aren't necessarily blessed with consistent ground strokes. That is also the way to beat Serena of course.

Much of the top 10 that fit the bill of power hitters (Sabalenka, Pliskova, Muguruza, Kvitova in particular) will all prefer to play Raducanu than they would Fernandez. Tennis is often about style match ups rather than ranking... which is why Dustin Brown has a 2-0 record over Nadal despite being outside the top 200. He's particularly awkward for his game personally (serve and volley), but others would enjoy playing him and would find his style easy to play against.

But yes, for the next 12 months she should absolutely milk the endorsements coming her way and she should have a great career ahead of her. But talk of surpassing the Williams sisters or winning multiple Grand Slams is wide of the mark by some distance.

I'll be happy to eat my words.

Anyone talking about her surpassing Serena at this stage is bonkers.

Martina is interesting about her though. She said that she has the most complete game at this stage she’s seen. ‘Arrived fully formed’ I think she said. And also said that loathe though she is to give too much praise this early on, she said she has literally never seen anything like this and it is incredible (not the winning, the game).

I am not a betting person, but I think she may well end up winning multiple grand slams and could be consistently top ten for a long time over the next decade. Not necessarily immediately, but within another year or two.

Hingis or Navratilova? Navratilova does tend to go overboard.

She is certainly not the complete package or anything close to that in which we have seen at this age. She would get blown off the court against a Sabalenka for example. She reminds me of Radwanska in game style but won't get near her level, she was world number 2 for a long time.

But Radwanska never won a Slam because she would always meet a player that would expose the weakness in her game, often Serena or Sharapova. They are all but gone, giving the likes of Raducanu a shot (which she took with both hands last week). But there are a host of power players about to flood the game in the women's side so I just don't see any top level longevity there. By that I mean top 10.

Ironically, it’s the emergence of the power players why Hingis retired… among other reasons that I wouldn’t be able to put here.

Gauff is far more complete a player and as discussed is only 17. Gauff will go deep in tournaments in all surfaces due to how rounded her game is. Raducanu will struggle with top level clay, that will be a very steep learning curve.

(I had to post that 5 times due to unacceptable language. Typo in rad’wansk’a)

Indian Wells in October, what is the World coming too - covid no doubt.
I heard she has quite rightly pulled out of Chicago, seedings and player lists probably sorted before the US Open, but Indian Wells next month surely their rankings and player entries would not be sorted out until after the US Open, if she can win a round or two there then go to Australia play a warm up tournie and make the Quarters then it will have been a marvelous few months with a rosey looking future for Emma.
I will be very excited to see how she goes in Indian Wells, Oz open etc (assuming it all happens), she has the game to go well in those tournaments, I think Raducanu is currently 3rd favourite to win the Australian open.

Hearing now the entry list is sorted for Indian Wells so Emma would only get in via a wildcard which I guess would mean playing in the 1st round (unlike the seeds) and playing a seed in the second round if she got through, which obviously could be one of the top seeds if not the number 1 seed.
I think she should still enter as currently her form on hardcourts is excellent.

since the Williams sisters, nobody has been a major force in womens tennis, theres a big vacuum there, she timed it perfect to win a major.

How many womens tennis players can you name? consistency seems to be the problem... hopefully she can maintain her level and pick up a few more majors... the press will be wetting themselves when Wimbledon comes around

I could name about 500, likely much more too.

Osaka has won a slam every year for the past 4 years (excluding this one). Barty has also been world number 1 for a very long time, I think she has now become 9th in the list of longest serving number 1’s (consecutively).

But you are right, the timing was key here. There is a bit of a changing of the guard and players are scrambling for a foot hold, some of the previous barriers to deep Slam progression aren’t there currently (but will be soon), Covid knocked some stars out before it began (both Williams sisters, Kenin, Brady and Ostapenko) and the draw was incredible (no opponent in the top 10).

The ATP/WTA doesn't give out wildcards, my word.

They are the choice of the tournament organisers, hence why most wildcards either go to big names to attract sponsors and sell tickets, or local talent and drum up local interest.

Come on now.
