| Hamer or Benda ? on 17:06 - Sep 13 by DwightYorkeSuperstar | Benda is brilliant. Truly. Admittedly he has made numerous mistakes with the ball at his feet, however there isn't another team in the country who would expect him to play the way he does. Even Ederson and Allison kick it long unless an obvious pass is on. His positioning, reading of opponents body language and decision making to dive the right way, often before they've even shot, is unbelievable. The save against McGoldrick (Sheff Utd) was world class. He is too good for this league. |
I assume you make Benda the second best Swans keeper of all time then, if you think he is Premier League standard ? Second only to the big Pole in the goal ? I hope you are right, but i am yet to see any evidence on the pitch to back up your claim.

Based on the opening games of this season, I make him the best Swans goalkeeper I have seen since I started watching regularly during the first League 1 season. That is of course if you exclude the nonsense he is being asked to perform with the ball at his feet. He saves an absurd percentage of one on ones. He's astonishingly quick to dive down to low and quick shots near his body. He comes to collect the ball when there is a clear opportunity to do so. The mistakes made with the ball at his feet are blinding many Swansea supporters to how talented he is. I like to think I'm a good judge of goalkeepers. Did you see Woodman gift Manchester United their opening two goals this weekend? He's made half a dozen or more mistakes leading to goals already this season. Freddie Woodman was appalling for us, yet few on here seemed to see it. [Post edited 14 Sep 2021 15:15]

2004/2005 season the year before we moved to the Liberty. Prior to that it was Football League Second Division for a short time and prior to that Football League Third Division. It was an amazing time, you seemed to be going up a league without getting promoted.
| Hamer or Benda ? on 08:53 - Sep 15 with 1167 views | Dr_Winston | Benda has potential. A LOT of potential. But he is far from the finished article at this moment in time. If he'd played more games last season as he should have instead of the inferior Woodman then he'd be further along in his progression, but that's water under the bridge. I get why RM has taken him out of the firing line a bit. I think he'd rather have a more experienced head in there for the moment whilst he sorts the rest of the team out, but Benda will return. Once the midfield and defence are more comfortable with each other and the way they're expected to play then we can look at adding a rookie keeper to the mix. | |

. I like Benda, but it seems good management at the moment. RM said he wants to sort out the defence first, before concentrating further forward. Benda looks full of promise, but it's no good for his confidence if he's making big bloopers every week. The majority of his game is excellent, but he has a howler in him when picking up the ball at his feet. Better to give him games more gradually at the moment. Probably will be a great confidence booster for him if he can take us on a decent cup run. It's a shame, as I'd rather see the young Benda in our first XI now, but time will give him a better chance I think.

Agreed, Doc (and Jackrmee and Resloven). Benda is obviously the much bigger talent, he will one day make the club a good amount of money when he moves on. He’s an excellent shot-stopper and is confident and assured when coming out for crosses. He’s a commanding presence in the box, which is the main job of most keepers in football. The counter to that is he’s very young, especially for a keeper, and he has made big mistakes in almost all of our matches this season. Some of that is down to the way he is being told to play, sweeper-keeper is a new experience for him, surely. He has mostly cut down on his mistakes playing out from the back, Martin and the coaching staff have clearly worked on that with him - when to kick it long, when to kick it short, how much time to spend on the ball before releasing it. These things have noticeably improved already, although possession-based teams are always going to have hairy moments when going back to the keeper. Even Ederson struggles at times and he is genuinely world-class and basically an outfield player with his passing ability and skills on the ball. But where Benda is still struggling is with the sweeper aspect, his decision-making rushing out of goal is something he needs more time on the training ground to develop. The Blackburn penalty and Preston free-kick are the biggest examples and possibly cost us points, but there have been others. He rushed out of his penalty area against Sheffield United and had Oliver Burke had more mettle he would have had a simple tap-in. These have surely been noted by the coaching staff, and they have taken him out of the firing line as a result. Benda needs some time to work on some things out of the spotlight, and I expect him to reclaim his place in the XI when he improves in training. Hamer is older, more calm on the ball and with his decisions, and will help steady the ship at the back in the meantime. But he is not the level of shot-stopper Benda is and the baton will be passed back at some point down the line.

Not convinced - he was very flappy at crosses, saved one with his genitals but admittedly made a couple of solid stops at the end Reckon Benda will be in for cup game then whoever gets the nod the game after will probably be in for the long haul

Yeah, he had a good game but not without issues. There was that one weak punch back into danger, and was closed down on one clearance. We'll see how he manages in tougher games against teams that put us under more consistent pressure.

Not to say Benda won’t improve, but he had a mixed start to the season, and cost us at least 2 goals I can think of off the top of my head. No doubt Hamer will have a stinker today now!

Something to be said for a goalkeeper actually keeping goal and leaving the sweeping to his defenders whom he should control. This i where Woodman was /is as bad as anyone Ive seen. Benda is good enough as is Hamer It's not our biggest issue

| Hamer or Benda ? on 15:22 - Sep 19 with 545 views | WalterBoyd | Hamer looks more relaxed, but a bit too relaxed at times. Dwells on the ball, takes an extra touch too many. Also if he receives a back pass to his left foot, a bit dodgy. Two matches in a row he has gifted the opposition the ball, not so much due to high pressing, but because of his very weak left foot. Both keepers have individual strengths but also different weaknesses. At this Championship level, do we just accept it ? | | | |

We decide who is best for us and help him with his weaknesses. If weak with left foot practice and practice or in Grime case being so weak on his right the same applies. They have all day to practice what most parks footballers can do.
