| Angela Rayner on 16:34 - Sep 26 with 1316 views | WalterBoyd | Rayner had a real tough upbringing, she claims- Her mum told her she could only love one person at a time, and that person was Rayners dad. Her mum was illiterate and bought dog food by mistake, for her to eat. When she was a child, she only had a bath once a week. She became pregnant age 15. [Post edited 26 Sep 2021 17:18]

In what way does she have a ‘potty mouth’? Using the word ‘scum’ isn’t a sign of a potty mouth. She is not my cup of tea politically but her achievement to get to where she is from her start in life shows an incredible drive and determination. She burns with a righteous rage. Understandably so. I don’t agree with her in terms of the right way to improve society but her desire to improve society is admirable. The removal of £20 a week from people this week is an abomination. It’s a policy carried out by those who have genuinely no concept of why £20 could possibly matter. People should be far more concerned with the removal of the support than with someone calling those that did it ‘scum’.

Unfortunately though, she has put herself in the spotlight, more for her use of the word 'scum' than for her achievements and campaigning. She has played into the hands of the Tory Press and the self righteous bigots in the Tory Party.

It’s deliberate. We are effectively seeing a Labour leadership challenge playing out with, so far, Rayner and Wes Streeting declared (unofficially). Her saying what she did in the way that she did is absolutely deliberate. Look at the coverage that she’s had today. She’s not trying to appeal to the Daily Mail readers. Or the Guardian readers for that matter. She’s trying to get to the so called ‘red wall’.

I don't believe it is a deliberate strategy. She will not get to the 'red wall' by using such terminology.

Underdog fighting the establishment for those also disadvantaged in life. Left school at 16 no qualifications and pregnant. Trade unionist Grandmother at 41 Worked in social care Bipolar mum and repeated suicide attempts Willing to openly call Tories scum and homophobic. She will sink or swim but not go quietly into the good night.

She won’t get to the northern working class by speaking the way she did? I think she is gambling that she will. Whether she’s right is a different matter, but I think it was absolutely deliberate. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

She suffers from class hatred however and needs to free herself from that burden. Plenty of Tories have had a tough upbringing too but to their shame the Grandees never pick them for high office. Quite why Boris became leader shames the decent people that vote Conservative and they are not scum for doing so any more than the likes of Derek Hatton who espoused the cause of the working class

Corbyn’s Labour was annihilated at the last GE, if they ever want to get back in power they need to persuade a good proportion of middle England to vote for them. I can see Rayner appealing to the Left but not to the masses. Starmer on the other hand won’t win over the left, but he’s the kind of person that should appeal to the middle ground. If he wants to lead Labour forward, he’s got to start by nailing this inept government to the floor, but it’s not happening, if it were I suspect Rayner would shut up and her allies would be silent. Only two years ago she called for kinder politics. She is toxic to labour's hopes of winning the next election just as Corbyn was.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on that. Nevertheless it's not the sort of language we should expect from a senior party politician when speaking of political opponents, and I say that as a committed Labour Party supporter. I believe Starmer, unlike Rayner, a credible future Prime Minister, has missed a golden opportunity to assert his leadership. It is sad to see how much the level of political debate has been devalued over the years.

It really is simple. Political respect should be fundamental, In Rayner s case ,it isn’t and it was not for Nye Bevan They are one party state adherents where only they know best . This applies to both main parties . Tories are insouciant mLabour simply riddled with class hatred God help us

It will encourage some labour voters to openly call the tories scum and we've seen plenty of abuse (historically) aimed at people on here for not being left wing. The Labour leader needs to be somewhere between Starmer and Rayner, strongly driven but in control, clever but not smug and always talking about working for the vast majority not just for the gilded few nor attacking them too much. Looking at the government, it should be easy for Labour to make up ground, Bojo is such an easy target and his cabinet is full of useless brown nosers. That Starmer isn't crucifying Bojo shows Starmer is just too nice, too bland but for me, Rayner goes too far the other way. Not like Corbyn but while her attitude is right her language is too much and she's too full on. She needs to rein in a bit. Most Labour voters aren't the uneducated masses anymore so she needs to be cleverer, not abusive.

Just to clarify - I’m not saying her language was ok or sensible, just that it was a deliberate ploy. I agree with the last bit. The issue though, highlighted on this thread, is the inconsistency. Johnson last week spoke at the UN and talked about Kermit and Miss Piggy. That’s not a grown up politician using language we should expect, and yet no comment. She is repeatedly criticised for leaving school pregnant. And yet, again, Johnson, has children all over the place with various women, and others that it is known have had abortions having been made pregnant by him. He has the morals of an alley cat. Yet nothing. It’s a shame Starmer isn’t able to capitalise and bring the Labour Party together. With the momentum lot still in full swing, it’s impossible I suspect.

They didn’t do it help workers, it was to help companies and stop mass corporate collapse. Don’t be so ridiculous.

I d agree with that Lisa. Being unaligned politically is sometimes more problematic when it comes to voting,as I trust none of them. Although Johnson turns my stomach there are decent people who vote Tory and are politically active . Same with Labour. Think Andy Burnham called it correct in his comments this morning. I don’t think Rayner is dumb in any way and believe she might be both ambitious and astute . She is formidable and few Tory front benches can really handle her .

Of course it was to help the 11 million workers . Don't be so ridiculous and bigoted. If they wanted to just help the companies they could have put all 11 million on the dole and just help the companies and corporations at a far cheaper cost. Even labour have unanimously accepted that furlough was good to those working.

I didn’t say it wasn’t a good thing. I said it was done to help companies. You can’t ‘put people on the dole’. Two options. One to make people redundant (huge cost to companies for a short term problem - need to rehire staff at end - more expensive than furlough and companies pay it not tax payers). Second for companies to use an insolvency process - hugely complex issues around treatment of creditors not least surrounding treatment of pension funds which would instantly require a section 75 valuation rendering other creditors worthless in many instances). Plus effect on public purse anyway - universal credit, reduced tax take, etc etc etc. In this country, with the employment laws we have, it was cheaper than the alternatives. It’s why the people that worked in different ways that didn’t have the above impacts, were ignored. I’m not remotely bigoted. I just find your misrepresentation of what happened irritating.
