Indeed, the media are keen to promote the image that only white people can be racist. I work in a business with a diverse workforce and the most racist thing I've heard said was from an Indian person about a Pakastani person.

The actions of both are terrible and there should be no room in our society for racism, anti Semitism, homophobia or any other type of hate. What Azeem Rafiq did was completely unacceptable and he should have known better, but it’s worth pointing out that he was 19 at the time and still young. The Peterborough footballer Jonson Clarke Harris was retrospectively punished for comments made when he was 18 some 10 years prior. Rafiq is going to have to face the music - his conduct has fallen well below and he’s going to have to take his punishment. His behaviour doesn’t excuse the behaviour of the others. Happens a lot, think a lot of people are too interested in calling out other people rather than looking at themselves...seems this time it has come back to haunt this individual. I like the saying, only one person you can control in life and that is yourself.

I used to work with a Bangladeshi fella, someone once called him Indian and he went berserk, it seems Bangladeshis', Indians' and Pakistanis' hate each other with a vengeance and say things about each other a white person would end up in court for. If I said some of the things he said, I'd be getting a visit from the police. It was over 20 years ago though, maybe things have changed for the better between those Asian countries.

Do you think Azeem Rafiq suddenly stopped using that language and having such a despicable opinion of Jewish people when he was 19?

Telegraph report excerpts: “ On Question Time last week, a member of the audience asked the panel about the racism scandal engulfing Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Fiona Bruce, in the chair, invited Nazir Afzal, the former prosecutor, to speak first. With indignation Afzal replied: “The brown person will answer first.” When Bruce asked if it was wrong to have asked him before the other panellists, he said yes, “I think so”. Later Stella Creasy, a Labour MP, suggested that Bruce was “normalising forms of racism”. …………………. “Some sought to justify his (Rafiq’s) behaviour, emphasising that his “teenage comments” could be explained by a lack of “social contact” and “dialogue” with Jewish people. When the young woman told her story of sexual harassment by Rafiq, the journalist who first reported the Yorkshire allegations saw only a conspiracy to punish Rafiq. “Weird that whistleblowers are so reluctant to come forward, isn’t it?” he asked. ………… Nobody thinks Fiona Bruce is racist, but she is found guilty. We know Azeem Rafiq used racist language, but he must be innocent. Some find themselves forgiven for what brings others excommunication. Not only is this unfair, it is counter-productive. By pitting one group against another and declaring whole groups guilty, we are making it harder to tackle individual acts of racism, institutional racism, and entrenched racial disparities. We have to ask, how did we end up this stupid?” Indeed
