| Swansea City exposed after suicidal defending yet again on 16:50 - Dec 13 with 523 views | ReslovenSwan1 | Brendan Rodgers played Swansalona with a defence of a young Neil Taylor who was quick. A young Spanish guy called Angel Rangel who was feisty . A big slow kid from Stockport County Ashley Williams. Limited footballers Alan Tate and Garry Monk both free transfers. Mark Gower and Leon Britton shored up the midfield. De Vries was great on the deck and a good shot stopper. All these guys were young and developed into the role. I fear Hamer, Bennett are too old and will not be there much longer. Naughton has pedigree and can be defensive leader to execute Martin's plans. If this season is a development season then Benda, Brandon Cooper Latibeaudeire and Cabango must be used to develop. Latibeaudiere was in the Man city academy for years and England u16 world champion skipper. A good athlete. To suggest that Martin needs a massive budget to play Swansalona is a myth. Brendan and Roberto did it with cast offs and freebees. [Post edited 13 Dec 2021 16:51]

| Swansea City exposed after suicidal defending yet again on 20:59 - Dec 11 by Brynmill_Jack | Like I’ve already said he messed the defence up just not to include Bidwell (who may or may not be leaving. Surely just play your best 11 as needed and worry about that later |
Yeah our downturn in form and constant exposure on the left side of the defensive three has coincided with Manning being moved into the wing back area. Bidwell isn’t the greatest player in the world by any stretch but he has a good engine and gets up and down very well.

That is the glass half empty viewpoint and you may be right. The keys to what Martin needs are smart recruitment and developing players. Neither Frank nor Farke were successful to start with in this league. Whether we can achieve that, only time will tell.

Then there isn’t really any excuses then, and why did we spend £5m when we didn’t need to? In reality, I think it’s obvious that while it CAN be done on the cheap, you have to have the correct system. Under Rodgers we played a few long balls as we did under Martinez. We played a completely mixed style, we certainly didn’t go short at all costs and have 80% possession, a large chunk of it on the edge of our own box. In our most famous Brendan Rodgers win (4-2 Reading) we had 53% possession. That’s more Cooper-esque than Martin-esque. If we are to play THIS way (remember not all possession games are the same) then I would be pretty confident to say we would need huge spending for it to be successful. I can’t think of a single team outside of the elite that try to play this way, for good reason.

There are always players who play while they have basically decided to move on. Grimes a classic and a recent one. He still played.
