I think you're overestimating the humanity of Russia and Putin too, just look at the state of Mariupol, that isn't an attack targeted exclusively at non-Russians. There are a majority of non-ethnic Russians in the population of Donbas, their "Russian brothers" are collateral damage.

Perhaps you missed 2014 when following the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity in 2014, Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula was occupied by unmarked Russian forces, later being annexed by Russia, while pro-Russia separatists simultaneously engaged the Ukrainian military in an armed conflict for control over eastern Ukraine; these events marked the beginning of where we are today . Putin's grab for more land if not the whole country (not going to happen by the way) on the pretext of persecution of pro Russian and nazism within the country .

The Russians invaded or annexed large parts of Ukraine in 2014 - they took the Crimea and Russian and Russian backed separatist rebels took control of 2 regions in Eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainians have been in conflict with the separatists ever since, but they’ve not been fighting the Russians in Crimea. Prior to 2014 Ukraine was neutral.
Twist it which ever way you want to, but there is no denying who started this war and it isn’t Ukraine.
