| Cost of Living; Planes, Ferries, Restaurants etc. 12:42 - Jul 22 with 3099 views | JACKMANANDBOY | The airports are at capacity, ferries are booked up, restaurants at full at weekends.....there's an awful lot of people with disposal income to spend. Edit: For the benefit of those who can't read or think. My post shows the contrast between those who are struggling and for example the 100,000 passengers who fly out of the UK each day, that's 36 million a year. [Post edited 25 Jul 2022 15:30]

It depends whst you are looking for and when. School holiday are almost always double the price of non school holidays. Most other times of year holidays are much more reasonable, although i know that isnt always possible.

Just before Covid hit the 3 of us went to Rhodes for a week, decent accomodation too, it cost us 1300 all in, including airport parking. That was in theschool holidays mostly, young un missed the first 2 days of school, the second one was because we only landed in Cardiff at 6am and were all too worn out at 8, fast asleep in our own beds. We flew from Cardiff.

Just come back from a Med cruise, 4 adults, 7 nights full board was £2600 including parking. Better food on the cruise, but nicer rooms and resort in Spain. Bargains are still to be had outside of School Hols.

Why not ask him? If they are entitled to it, they are entitled to it, regardless of what they spend their money on. EDIT: Although you say he is working with you, just checked the Swansea criteria for free school meals, and would this be applicable to him ? Child Tax Credit where total annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Custom service) is less than £16,190 a year or it would be *If you are working and you also get Universal Credit, and want to claim free school meals for your child(ren), you may not know whether your earnings are more than £7,400 a year. When you make your claim for free school meals, your local authority will check your eligibility using the eligibility checking system. In most cases, the eligibility checking system will work out whether your earnings are below £7,400 a year and if you are eligible to claim free school meals for your child(ren). If he's working full time, and clearly passes the above criteria, I would not ask him that question Jim, he may have slipped up, and might be pulling a fast one. [Post edited 24 Jul 2022 21:35]

I agree Jim, spending 210 pound a week on cigarettes is an absolute waste of money, but it's his money. If we were to go down that route, well let's ban anyone getting free school meals of any luxuries, like how dare they subscribe to netflix or amazon prime when they could be buying their child's dinner, how dare they take the family away for a holiday when they could be buying their child dinner, thing is, it's all to do with the earnings threshold and your colleague must be below it.

I work with a lady called Lesley, she asked me how come I go on holiday so much as she can not afford it. I use my own filter coffee 20p a day. She buys a big Starbucks each day £3.75 I have homemade sandwiches £1. She buys an M&S lunch each day £5.00 Over 220 working days that's a £1,650.00 diofference. When I pointed that out she said I didn't realise. She know brings in her own lunch, steals my coffee!! [Post edited 25 Jul 2022 15:26]

Budgeting should be taught in schools, along with how to calculate interest. There's nowhere near enough life skills education going on. Think the only thing even remotely close covered when I went to school was how to write a cheque, which is obviously useful these days... Got all my DD's and Standing orders going out as soon after payday as possible. Once I know what's left I divide that by the number of days until payday and then it's easy from there, even with saving £250 a month.

I always remember my maths teacher telling us to put our calculators away because “you won’t always have a calculator in your pocket when you’re older.” Well balls to you Miss Frecklington I have my phone and will use it to do your stupid pointless quadratic equations if I need to.

I always found playing darts to be a much more effective way of keeping mental arithmetic sharp than anything I learned in school.
