| NRL pride jersey fiasco 23:53 - Jul 27 with 2433 views | Dr_Parnassus | For anyone that doesn’t know, Manly Sea Eagles introduced a pride jersey with rainbows on to wear in this round. Massive game, top 8 is on the line. The Pacific Islanders withdrew immediately as they are intensely religious people where homosexuality is forbidden. That part seems to be left out of the conversation. I don’t agree with them of course (I’m not religious), but they also have a right to abide by their religion and choose not to celebrate certain aspects of life if they don’t wish to. They haven’t attacked anyone, criticised anyone - just have withdrawn as it doesn’t align with their religious beliefs. This ‘enforced social justice’ and ‘iron fist political grandstanding’ really needs to be kept out of sport now. Or it be allowed but people be completely free to choose to participate or not, free from reprisal and judgement… which is impossible in the social media age. So it needs to be scrapped. It’s getting a bit like the Spanish Inquisition by social media now. “Do you think how we think? If not we will put you on the spot and you can have the consequences of that”. It’s funny that our way of thinking getting imposed on indigenous people is perfectly acceptable when Western people are personally offended. Yet completely unacceptable when they aren’t. It’s also unacceptable to slate someone’s religion normally (ironically that is seen as bigoted), until Western ideals are challenged then they are happy to go after them for not thinking the same. The hypocrisy in these types of people is astounding. Zero cultural awareness while pretending they are people of the world. What right do we have to tell these people what to believe in? You would probably never know these players views if it wasn’t forced upon them to declare it publicly. It needs to stop.

It’s what these organisations think the public wants, they think it’s good PR and ultimately sponsorship. But the public doesn’t want it, most people are sick of this fake and forced compliance. Except they are so thick they don’t realise that people have different beliefs and different ways of thinking. Demanding everyone think the same is probably the most unaccepting, intolerant and bigoted position you can take. Sport is not a soapbox to preach to people how they should think and what they should believe in. This world needs rid of this poisonous cancel culture, woke drive that has become an obsession. Treat everyone nicely and get on with things, stop trying to make a spectacle of every single statement. As I said, these players would probably never have made their feelings known, would never have been an issue, simply a part of their religious beliefs that they abide by quietly and respectfully. Now they are in the spotlight for being raging homophobes with people discussing the situation pretending they understand it. Same with BLM. The SKY presenters were forced to wear it to the point it made some feel uncomfortable because they did not support the organisation (rightly so). What is the point in a gesture if its forced upon people and people made to comply. It’s not a gesture then, it’s a publicity driven demand. Needs to stop.

| NRL pride jersey fiasco on 08:28 - Jul 28 with 1589 views | Gwyn737 | The leadership in Manley definitely made a mistake in not consulting the players and I thought their statement acknowledging the error was pretty good. I don’t know the answer to this but I wonder how those players (mostly Pacific Islanders) who objected to the jersey on religious grounds would feel about trans pride, what with trans being pretty normalised in their culture and homelands? | | | |

Absolutely. Some, perhaps most, of us simply want to get on with our own lives without interfering in the lives of others. Respect and tolerance are in short supply at the present time. This forum often proves my point.

Homosexuality (or rather homosexual acts) is illegal in much of the Pacific Islands. Transgenderism is not and very much part of their culture. It’s known as fa’afafine and seen as a third gender and not considered homosexuality. Very refreshing to have some intelligence and objectivity in the replies though I must say. It’s very easy for people to toe the party line without even thinking in this day and age. Excellent stuff

I’d call that hypocritical it that’s my take on religion - choosing one group to be ungodly while another is deemed ok. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Transsexuals aren’t homosexuals though? They are people who identify with another gender. It’s their religious and traditional beliefs, it’s not really something you can accuse them of being hypocritical about, it’s not really conscious bigoted decision making, it’s their way of life. All religion frowns upon some sections of society but not others, depending how they are defined in their scriptures. If we want an accepting and tolerant world then we have to accept and be tolerant of peoples religious beliefs too. People all too often think tolerance and acceptance simply means being accepting and tolerant of THIER view of the world only. Who are we to tell these people how to think and enforce our views on them? Australia has a deep and dark history of us imposing our way of life on the indigenous people here. If you ever go to Katherine (place not person) you would be shocked. Aboriginal people all sat around in the middle of a Westernised town, they have been given homes and jobs but they simply want to live off the land and in outdoor communities - who says our way of life is better? They have been pushed further and further North off their lands. Their medical needs aren’t met, their cultural needs aren’t met and their way of life absolutely trampled upon. They have certain medical needs which aren’t met by western medicine, their life expectancy is significantly lower. We have insisted they adapt to our way of life and our ways of thinking and it’s probably destroying them as a people. [Post edited 28 Jul 2022 9:25]

It’s a race to the bottom though, isn’t it? Those players have the right to express their religious freedoms whereas the club have the right to set their corporate values. We’ve got the situation with LIV golf and then there’s the All Blacks who moralise with their no d***heads rule which is bypassed by woman beaters as long as they’re scoring tries.

But they haven’t expressed anything, that’s the point. They just want to play rugby as is their job. They aren’t promoting hate or actively discriminating against anyone, they are simply saying the jersey they are being made to wear goes against their religious and cultural beliefs. Hence why this spotlight shining social justice witch hunt needs to stop. You accept people for who they are or you don’t. That includes people of certain religions.

I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m saying that their rights don’t necessarily trump the clubs corporate values. It’s been an omnishambles on this occasion as there was no consultation on the jersey. In general life, most jobs come with a set of rules you must comply with, set by the company itself. They have the right to do that (providing laws aren’t being broken).

They should though. It’s a rugby club, playing rugby should be the priority - anything that calls that into question and also puts its players in jeopardy shouldn’t be entertained regardless of modern false corporate grand standing. The thing is it’s not just a freedom to refuse, it’s being publicly put in a position where they have to declare their beliefs. If it doesn’t match up to the mobs then look out. It’s a form of religious victimisation. I’m sure it wasn’t intended that way but it’s how it’s turned out. If only rugby teams just played rugby eh?

It’s come from a place of decency but they should’ve spoken to their staff first. I’d have no problem at all in wearing it, but I’m not religious

Not as odd as expecting people who are religious to back something they don’t want too as it conflicts with their beliefs. I take it you wouldn’t then. Point proven

| NRL pride jersey fiasco on 22:14 - Jul 28 with 1202 views | Jack123 | The Roosters coach criticised the decision by the players and called for greater movement within the sport towards inclusivity. "It is great what the owners of Manly have decided to do and it is unfortunate that it has panned out this way because everyone is equal, no matter what race, gender, sexual preference, everyone is equal," Robinson said. "Let people make their choice and let's not discriminate against those, and we are still doing that, and that is why it is unfortunate. Taken from Sky sports https://www.skysports.com/rugb What the hell, that Robinson must be off his head, he says let people make their choice, and let's not discriminate against those.. Hmm everyone except Manly players he must have meant. | |
