Network Rail is of course a Nationalised company their staff are over manned and on very high wages with little incentive to increase their efficiency.

It that why the RMT union holds share in both BP and Shell and other capitalist companies. They hold £60 million in assets and enjoy dividends from these shares.

| Network rail boss on 13:41 - Aug 19 by BryanSwan | Where to even begin with this.... Oh my. 1.UK subsidise the rail companies who are almost all state owned by foreign countries, the money we continually chuck at them is used to subsidise their own rail travel. 2. The median salary of striking workers is £31k - £33k, not £43k which is the median salary for the entire rail sector. 3. Why should people who havent had real wage rises in years accept that? It is not greedy to demand better working conditions and pay. 4. Maybe much like the energy sector, these poor poor rail companies should be taken back under public control. |
Network Rail is under public ownership and nearly all the rail infrastructure including most of the land, tracks and major stations.

| Network rail boss on 21:07 - Aug 19 by oldtownjack | Agree totally, it's painful isn't it. Mick Lynch's salary is £84,000 whilst Eddie Dempsey's is £78,000 which are both quite reasonable considering the responsibility they carry. These have been decided democratically by the union members. Also they can be voted out at any time where they will return to their more modestly paid jobs hence the ludricousness of the argument of Eddie Dempsey living in a council flat. I know we live in a society which thrives on division but I'll never cease to be amazed at how working people can be so anti other working class folk who are just after a decent standard of living whilst giving those at the top a free ride. |
Mick Lynch remuneration package in 2020 was £112,000 try checking your facts. His Deputy still lives in subsidised council house which one of his poor members would be grateful to have the opportunity to live in.

It was taken into public ownership because the previous owners Railtrack, a orivate company failed miserably A Union official , is paid by it's members, and can be relieved of his position by the members. I believe his deputy had the house before he got his position and good salary. This has been explained to you by a previous poster, but i'm not sure it has sunk in yet

| Network rail boss on 23:19 - Aug 19 by Boundy | How may Union bosses have been "got rid of" because of their excessive wages ? it should never be a race to the bottom but can anyone justify why in 2020 the average total remuneration of the 30 union bosses on more than £100,000 was £150,755 ( not including expenses) . All roles have responsibilities , if i was to get something wrong I could kill or seriously injure a colleague but my remuneration bears no resemblance to some figures we see bandied about and I'm sure that could be said by most on here |
When the heavy end shut in Llanwern in 2002 I was offered a job as a full time post with the ISTC as a organiser but would have had to move to Yorkshire or Scunthorpe if I could have had a job in the South Wales region I'd have accepted Unions tends to pay very well basically to set an example to the employer's they deal with I'd have been on about 3-4 k more than I was earning in the steelworks Also union's are very transparent on what they pay figures are given to members every year of what staff earn perhaps businesses should do the same

Not sure what you mean when you say setting an example to bosses , if you mean comparable pay structures to bosses of large organisations then you'd be right , if you mean to the average worker than it's not been noted nor acted a upon or could it , inflation would have to match the pay structure , it's not the wages which is the problem it's the cost of living ,

Yes the highly unprofitable business of owning and maintaining the tracks is in public hands. The profiteering business of rail travel is in the hands of private companies and foreign states.

Correct. Also remember the East Coast Mainline franchise. The private company that ran that was utterly useless, providing an awful service. That also had to be taken back into public ownership. Then, when it was back up and running successfully what did they do ? Pass it back to a private company again.

Shareholders are either investment banks or individuals who take a chance on putting their or other peoples money into a company , myself I once held shares with my previous employer which netted a decent return which enables me to put down a deposit on my home. The flip side my pension which is invested via a well known company has seen my pension pot decrease , shareholders come in all shapes and sizes and not all (if any) are the scum of the earth ,just decent human beings trying to do the best forvthemselves and families

Railtrack, laid off many of it's old BR management and engineers. Railtrack didn't have the expertise and brought in contractors, some from the US too, to upgrade the west coast line. They failed miserably and run up huge debts. It then had to go back into public ownership

The UK taxpayers subsidies the Rail industry by £5 billon a year, precovoid figures. During the pandemic the UK taxpayers poured £16 billion into keeping all Rail workers in a job at full pay, not furlough pay, despite virtually no passengers. Time the Railway workers who are on median pay of £43,000 showed a bit of gratitude rather than naked greed. Paying excessive wages will only result in reduced train services, closed lines and job losses. When will Lynch realise it will be a repeat of the 1980s when Scargill killed the coal industry |
Why subsidise failure at 5 billion a year when it could be properly nationalised and bright back under government control? All your saying is rightly privatization is a failure.
