He's on £590,000 a year. There must be many more under him on a good screw too, plus the profits and dividends going to shareholders. Is this why it's so expensive to travel and not wage demands from the unions?

Why subsidise failure at 5 billion a year when it could be properly nationalised and bright back under government control? All your saying is rightly privatization is a failure.

As Mick Lynch was saying on LBC last Friday it wasn’t legally possible to renationalise the railways under EU rules, now that we’re no longer a member state the only thing preventing it is the political will at Westminster to do exactly that.

For me as a frequent train traveller it’s a no-brainer.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

It was taken into public ownership because the previous owners Railtrack, a orivate company failed miserably

A Union official , is paid by it's members, and can be relieved of his position by the members. I believe his deputy had the house before he got his position and good salary.

This has been explained to you by a previous poster, but i'm not sure it has sunk in yet

Still don't see why someone on £80,000 is living in a subsidised council house when he can afford to buy or rent. I have explained this to you a previous post but clearly it has not sunk in.

THE COUNCIL HOUSE SHOULD BE GIVEN TO A KEY WORKER ON LOW PAY NOT A RICH UNION OFFICIAL.

Hope that helps you.

It is privatisation. Railway passengers numbers have doubled since privatisation and services have vastly improved with modern trains, except of course Tfw, which are still using 50 year trains. Tfw was of course taken over by the Senedd.

TFW inherited all their rolling stock from Arriva Trains Wales who had been operating the oldest rolling stock in the UK. When the DoT awarded the contract to Arriva trains in 2003 theeecwas no provision for any increase in passenger numbers across the network.

Things are improving, but it takes a long time to make good decades of under investment, we’re seeing this across most of the public sector.

In addition it’s going to continue to go backwards over the next year or two.

Public services aren’t exempt from the energy hikes (as well as the general inflation increase) which aren’t being funded centrally.

For context, the increase in my school’s gas and electric bills comes to the equivalent cost of an experienced teacher and 2 support staff. That money has to be found as does meeting the cost of the unfunded pay awards (that we didn’t know about and couldn’t budget for).

It’s a part of the crisis nobody is talking about. Hospitals need heating and lighting too.

Maybe he's happy in that house, why should he leave, because he's on a temporary good salary? Who are you to say where ppl can or should live? How arrogant is that

How much would a house cost to buy in London?

Services have vastly improved? Have you travelled by train anywhere outside of the UK. Our rail travel is woeful in comparison not to mention ridiculously overpriced.

This isn't just about money, it's about compulsory redundancies, cuts in maint and safety, and unsociable hours. Anyone who has worked shiftwork would have sympathy with what the railworkers are being asked to do

A few years ago I took a sleeper train from Prague to St Petersburg which is around 1000 miles give or take. I got my own cabin with a bed, there was a shower and a dining car. Cost me around 15 quid. You can barely get to Cardiff standing only crammed in with thousands of others for that here.

The prices we pay in this country for a quite frankly shite service is absolutely ludicrous.

I bet that would have been a good trip, although St Petersburg would probably be off the itinerary at the moment

Yeah such a shame. It’s a beautiful city with lovely people, no doubt many of whom have been sent off to be slaughtered needlessly by that maniacal pigmy in the Kremlin.

Agree totally, it's painful isn't it. Mick Lynch's salary is £84,000 whilst Eddie Dempsey's is £78,000 which are both quite reasonable considering the responsibility they carry. These have been decided democratically by the union members. Also they can be voted out at any time where they will return to their more modestly paid jobs hence the ludricousness of the argument of Eddie Dempsey living in a council flat.

I know we live in a society which thrives on division but I'll never cease to be amazed at how working people can be so anti other working class folk who are just after a decent standard of living whilst giving those at the top a free ride.

Great post, so Eddie gives up his family home and buys a house in London that he will not be able to afford should he get voted out of office, a Union boss is a bit like a football manager, a couple of years and you move on.
