| Corporate pandering - Ukraine 10:40 - Aug 25 with 787 views | Dr_Parnassus | Not a flippant comment here at all, but a genuine curiosity. When they say they are “supporting Ukraine’s stand for freedom” - how exactly? I just don’t understand why clubs think doing meaningless stuff like this is helping anything at all. I’m sure some will say “raising awareness”, it’s a line often trotted out by those who don’t really know how it helps because - who isn’t aware? If there is genuine support being offered to the people of Ukraine then I’m all for it, but if it’s just a hashtag then to me I can’t stand that arms length corporate pandering that goes on, especially on social media. Get Kev Johns on the pitch at half time to declare the club will match all ground collections toward an arms shipment to Kherson then it will have meaning. | |
| An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it. |

Yep, just strikes me as nonsense really. It’s the corporate equivalent of one of those attention seeking Facebook status updates. Not that I am that way inclined, but it’s almost offensive by how brazen and aloof it is. Using people’s suffering to try and enhance your online image. If you want to do something then do something, it’s a club with £20m income per season. If you aren’t prepared to actually do something then button it would be my advice. But I suppose most on social media lap this stuff up anyway, there aren’t too many rational thinkers that see things as they are on the platforms in question. Everyone seems to play the game and be completely immersed in such pandering and empty virtue signalling.

| Corporate pandering - Ukraine on 13:09 - Aug 25 with 668 views | Kerouac | It serves a dual purpose; 1) Virtue signalling - No cost, no effort, just announce "we are good people" and morons buy it. & 2) It is signalling to their own support that if they do not think the same and support the same political objectives as the club...which are always the same political objectives of the Western elites...then they are not welcome, they are "extreme" even. It is sinister. Coercion. Sport should not involve politics. Full stop. [Post edited 25 Aug 2022 13:10]

I took in a game at Aberavon RFC last season, they didn’t have the Ukrainian flag up on display but they did have a bucket collection to raise money for Ukraine - the club then matched the amount the supporters raised doubling the donation. I have to say I was well impressed, a very generous act. Lots of clubs could have done something similar to what Aberavon did. I don’t think Wales had a collection before the play off against the Ukraine (I could well be wrong though) - that would have been a nice touch and matching it would have been even better.

A quiet dignity with a purpose wins every single time over a loud and empty gesture. If there is an old person sat at a little stall with a collection bucket that says nothing until you approach, I ensure I give whatever change I have. (Doesn’t have to be an old person of course, but that who those types tend to be). If there is a young uni type, blocking your path, twirling a clipboard on their finger while yelling at people and following them, knowing all you are doing is paying their wages to do it with any donation… then I stop and waste as much of their time as possible asking them awkward questions about their charity work. I always offer them a chance to donate to a charity of my choice while I’m standing there, and whatever they donate - I will match it. Not had a single person take me up on it. Takes away their response of “don’t you care about dying children?” or something just as crass. My donation is always in their hands, they donate to my charity and I’ll donate to theirs. Simple.
