| School uniforms on 21:44 - Sep 3 by Gwyn737 | Do you think uniform is more expensive than buying a range of different clothes? I’m not sure what you’re objection really is? Can you give a list of ‘cons?’ Do you see any ‘Pros?’ |
My objection is getting all kids to conform.

Do you feel the same about all school rules? The world has rules. Kids need to understand that. Mind you. That’s not the main purpose(s) of a uniform at all.

The world doesn't have rules. They don't have school uniforms in Germany or the Netherlands. Makes me wonder how they manage to educate their children

As I said in my original post, there’s no precise causal link between uniform and learning. Nobody has made that claim. It’s not why school’s (in the main) choose to wear a uniform. Nobody is arguing with you that children can’t learn without a uniform. I keep saying, that’s not the point.

Most jobs have a dress code. I think uniforms at a school level helps kids to fit in, without uniform children would very quickly be segregated into what clothes they wore. It would just add another opportunity to bully.

I’m repeating a lot of what has been written but a non-exhaustive list includes: 1. Cost - no need to buy a wide range of clothing across the year. It’s not a slave to fashion needing regular changes. Schools can keep spares for emergencies and organise second hand provision. Schools are now (in England with Wales coming) in a position to widen suppliers (Supermarkets etc.) 2. Behaviour - stops children getting picked on for not having the ‘right’ things. At the extreme, it prevents gang colours and the like being worn. 3. Health, safety and well being - easy identification if you’re out and about on trips and the like. Uniform allows you to make sure clothing is appropriate for tasks in school. 4. Instilling pride - help a sense of identity and ties into values. And finally, it’s (in the main) what children and parents want - mostly due to the above. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I have no idea, how German, Netherlands Italy etc manage to do all that without uniforms Uniforms are a throw back decades and have no relevance today. They should be scrapped

….and that has nothing to do with why we choose to have uniforms here. No uniform may work well for those countries, but you can’t compare. Culturally different, starting school age different, different curriculum requirements, different class and school size etc. Uniforms work for us and that’s reflected in their popularity. You talk of not wanting children to be made to conform bur who is driving that? It’s what parents and children want.

| School uniforms on 12:29 - Sep 3 by Sirjohnalot | Isn’t the thinking behind it stopping kids turning school into a fashion show thereby making the kids from poorer families look worse ? Just need to make the prices cheaper, school sell them directly maybe ? |
Just allow uniform from George in Asda or similar low cost outlets. White polo shirts and grey trousers should do the trick. I agree about the fashion show bit so not allowing expensive jeans etc is a good idea I think personally.

What about the points about bullying or costs or being a team ? If it stops a kid from a poor family from being bullied, it’s a good thing ?

Isn't that life though? My neighbor has a better car than i do. You probably earn more money than i do. Why would kids want to be part of a team? Do they have bullying in countries that don't have uniforms?

Let me just make sure I’ve got it right… You want to scrap something which neither parents or kids have a problem with, which could lead to an increase in bullying and will favour kids from richer backgrounds, who already have an advantage over poorer kids due to access to private coaching, technology at home, for no apparent reason and your response to the fact that children could be bullied for not being able to afford designer clothes, especially with the cost of living crisis is ‘that’s life “ ? Being an adult is different, commercial barristers earn more than me, i couldn’t care less what car I drive but I’m not a kid and am not going to be bullied for not driving whatever the latest car is. I’ve no idea what the situation is in other countries, and kids may well get bullied there, but what if there’s a rule about only coming to school in plain shirts with no logos ? What about not having mobile phones in class, or interrupting the teacher, or chewing, or swearing or doing your homework ? They’re all rules. What happens if they do not conform in school and then they go to college or work ? They have to conform then. I played rugby in school along with some lads who were always in trouble. Rugby taught them to be part of a team, to take responsibility and to respect each other. Uniform is a sense of belonging, some of the kids that I was brought up with, never had any sense of belonging at home, uniform can help with that. Why do you see it as a problem and do you really see bullying as a ‘so what ’ Scenario ? Kids have killed themselves over it, Not sure if this is a wind up or not

He’s being a bit silly now. North Korea indeed 🙄 It’s a moot point anyway. He’s welcome to have his opinion but it’s not going to change for they myriad of reasons already posted.
