| Swansea City v Hull City : Matchday Thread 22/23 19:34 - Sep 14 with 10870 views | NotLoyal | It’s an odd world, unless you let goals in consistently in injury time, then it just becomes a pain in the Humberside. Swansea City : Friday night pre match : ‘We’ve been so unlucky’ 16th Sep 2022 16:12If tomorrows SKY game at the swansea.com stadium is to be the turning point for Russell Martin it really must happen tomorrow. If we reflect back on the swans 1969/70 season with a start of two wins in nine that led to a third placed finish that season we have to have some hope. 0 Swansea City v Hull City : Two managers on the brink ? 17th Sep 2022 09:00Swansea City take on Hull City this afternoon in an early kick off that the swans really must win to convince the clubs majority owners all is well at the swans. Russell Martin is desperate to carry the flag forwards after an upturn in performances in recent games at least. But now it really is about results. 1 Swansea City dominate and ram home their quality at last ! 17th Sep 2022 15:11Russell Martin was delighted at the end of this afternoons game as his team brushed aside a pretty mundane and clueless Hull City. Despite no goals in the first half when really the swans should have scored three at least the second half was as good as we’ve seen this season. 0 Swansea City: Steven Benda; Nathan Wood, Kyle Naughton, Ben Cabango; Matty Sorinola, Joe Allen, Matt Grimes (captain), Ryan Manning; Jay Fulton, Ollie Cooper, Joel Piroe. Substitutes: Andy Fisher, Harry Darling, Michael Obafemi, Olivier Ntcham, Luke Cundle, Fin Stevens, Armstrong Oko-Flex. Hull City: Nathan Baxter, Lewis Coyle (captain), Callum Elder, Jacob Greaves, Tobias Figueiredo, Ozan Tufan, Oscar Estupinan, Dimitrios Pelkas, Jean Michel Seri, Regan Slater, Harvey Vale. Does that one performance make up for Blackburn home, Boro away or Luton home? There’s being overly negative , th err Ed being realistic and there’s being crystal meth overly optimistic too. |
I think he's trying to say it's a step in the right direction. I've turned into one of his biggest critics but if he keeps us playing this simpler way and it gets us points and further up the table then I will be happier.

Martin is responsible for our lowly position and it beholds him to improve it. He has achieved nothing as of yet . We have enough quality

We all will. The point is that how did it take him over a year to figure out he was wrong? That performance was down to the players yesterday taking risks and reaping rewards

Right, so what you're saying is, if the players are not brave enough to take risks and we lose it's Martins fault, but, when they are brave enough to take risks and we win, its because of the players taking risks, got it.

Different kinds of risks. For the past year we've been playing high risk low reward stuff in our own half, now we're seeing longer play, more crosses into the box etc. Martin was adamant the former was his vision for how we should play.

I tried replying last night but lost the site on my mobile. As jasper says below there’s a stark contrast in how the “process” was and how it is now. Martin has taken a long time to see the downsides of playing the risk between the keeper and defence only to push that risk further up the friend where it’s safer for us and more dangerous for the opposition. It turns out Matt Gill had a huge input this week according to Martin himself. Maybe he knows what he’s doing and Martin doesn’t. One other thing (that I know Jasper won’t agree with) - get Grimes out of our starting 11 and replace him with Joe and we will only go one direction- forward. We will start scoring lots more pals and become a side nobody wants to miss a game watching them. He puts undue pressure on all around him by only having one foot and taking an age to control the ball. By this time any forward pass is usually blocked off and he goes backwards and as a result so do we. He’s had three years and he has shown no sign of being a very average midfield player. Time to give some hungry youngsters a chance. Let’s face it the results are there for all to see with Ollie and Luke Cundle. Congrieve would smash it in a side going forward more quickly too.

Agreed, but do you not think he's seen the light, against Sheffield we lost a point while trying to get all 3, we could have reverted back to possession football in our own half seeing the game out, if we had and conceded there would rightly be a melt down on here, risk or reward, that time it didn't come off, but we played well enough in that game to actually go for a winner, at the end of the day we only lost 1 point, I know at the end of the season 1 point could make a big difference, but if the risk had paid off we would have gained all 3, Garry Monk was rightly criticised for not accepting help as a young up and coming manager, hopefully with the new couches Marting as brought in has seen the light and admitted we needed a change in tactics, its not a sign of weakness to admit you've got it wrong, I've even done it myself in the past, although not that often. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

totally agree with you on Matt Grimes, I can't for the life of me understand why he haven't rested Grimes if only to see if he's the problem in our slow play, I've never seen a player so reliant on one foot, as a pro he should be able to make a 15/20 yard pass with his weaker one, he's so predictable in his movement.

I’m glad a few more people are noticing this. He’s also play safe to the max, completely risk averse whereas the youngsters try things and more often than not they come off. Cundle is the nearest player we have to the Piroe radar we have. I’d love to see him and Ollie behind Piroe and Allen DM with Congrieve the link.

He played there occasionally in the u18s but there's no way Congreve should play that deep in midfield at senior level. He's an attacking 10 or wide player.

Came on as a late sub in their 7-0 win at the weekend. If we don't give our young players chances there aren't clubs queuing up to do it for us. Not like we do for PL academy players.

Agreed. We could and maybe should have blooded Dan Williams ourselves. We carry players like Paterson and these lads would kill to put that shirt on.

We lost a point due to a basic school boy error in the 94 minute. By all means try to win the game by putting both our centre halfs in the box for the corner. Our full back was taking the corner so we left one player on the halfway line who was our oldest and slowest player. One of our younger midfield needed to be there as well. That way we have enough cover if the corner was cleared quickly. A basic error someone on the pitch should have sorted that out.

And why do we never have a player on the halfway line when defending a corner. Put Sorinola there it will force the opposition to take players back and give a quick out ball if our keeper catches the ball.

Martin did have a player in a high position earlier in his reign but we didn't pick a defence that could deal with corners so not much was gain by it as we were conceding too many goals Now with a goalkeeper who comes for crosses, Wood added to Cabango and Piroe height in defending corners, we should be keeping a number of players up the pitch. I'm think in time once the team's confidence settles Darling should be added to the defence as I am concerned about Naughton's lack of pace(and Grime's) as we are still leaving ourselves short at the back when the defence drives forward with the ball, someone with pace should be looking to drop back and cover any holes left..

Naughton is ,frankly, done. All he has now is his "experience" but looking at how we are till fragile it doesnt seem to be paying off. One on one,he is toast and has been for many years. Pretty simple really. There is enough in this squad to shoot up the table as few really outstanding outfits. I want us back in the Prem, which puts me in a minority I know.

I'm sure Naughton will have to be dropped from the defence eventually but we will see, if given a relatively settled team can we get a run of positive results without leaving us stupidly exposed at the back. We were good for a point at least against Sheffield United until error and they are top.
